2011 MLB Draft : New York Mets Draft Report

New, 4 comments

The Mets got a superior athlete in Nimmo at the top followed by a few potential rotation pieces and a couple bullpen arm type of picks. They also chose a couple middle infielders that could play at the big league level. There are a few solid safe picks and a couple high ceiling picks. Overall it was a nice mix even though it was pitching heavy.

1 Brandon Nimmo , OF , NYM $2,100,000 19.33 3/27/1993 Left Right 6'3" 185

Brandon Nimmo is an unusual pick for the Mets. He is a high upside high school talent that took over $2 million to sign. He has an great swing and is a great athlete. The sky is the limit for him.

1s Michael Fulmer , RHP , NYM $937,500 19.36 3/15/1993 Right Right 6'3" 200

Fulmer is a solidly built pitcher that sits in the 93 MPH range and has #2 starter type stuff. He needs to refine his stuff but he is a good bet to be a starter long term. I like this pick here.

2 Cory Mazzoni , RHP , NYM $437,500 22.77 10/19/1989 Right Right 6'1" 190

Mazzoni isn't all that much different than Fulmer, just a college arm that is a little less likely to be a starter and without quite as high a ceiling. He's a solid bet to be a back of the rotation arm.

3 Logan Verrett , RHP , NYM $425,000 22.10 6/19/1990 Right Right 6'2" 180

Verrett is an athletic arm that could be a 3rd starter if his fastball plays up. If not he will likely get hit harder and end up as a back of the rotation or bullpen arm.

4 Tyler Pill , RHP , NYM $200,000 22.16 5/29/1990 Left Right 6'1" 180

Pill is a polished righty that doesn't have a ton of upside but has a 4 pitch mix. His cutter is effective and his change works really well and makes his fastball play up. He could be a back of the rotation guy.

5 Jack Leathersich , LHP , NYM $110,000 22.04 7/14/1990 Right Left 6' 205

He can run it up to the mid 90's but is likely a bullpen arm based on his stuff and delivery.

6 Joe Tuschak , OF , NYM $250,000 19.77 10/17/1992 Left Right 6' 185

Tushcak is a speedy outfielder who is a very good athlete. He will need time to reach his ceiling but it could be as a starting CF. He is more likely a 4th OF'er

7 Cole Frenzel , 1B , NYM $200,000 22.37 3/13/1990 Left Right 6'2" 208

Frenzel doesn't likely have the bat to work out at 1B. He is more of a gap hitter with decent average than a true 1B kind of hitter. He is athletic and could have a shot at a corner outfield spot though but the Mets drafted his as a 1B. I think I would try him in the OF or at 3B first.

8 Daniel Muno , SS , NYM $10,000 23.46 2/9/1989 Both Right 5'11" 175

Muno is a decent senior sign and profiles as a utility infielder.

9 Alex Panteliodis , LHP , NYM $175,000 22.05 7/7/1990 Left Left 6'2" 240

Panteliodis is a big back of the rotation kind of starter or a solid reliever with an average fastball and a nasty slider at times. I liked him when I saw him in 2010. I didn't see him in 2011 but I heard he didn't do well out of the pen.

10 Matt Budgell , RHP , NYM $225,000 19.82 9/30/1992 Right Right 6'3" 150

11 Christian Montgomery , RHP , NYM $250,000 19.68 11/20/1992 Right Right 6'1" 240

Montgomery is a righty with a low 90's fastball and a nice breaking ball when he is on. His weight went up this spring and his stuff went down and he slid in the draft. He is going to have to work hard to stay in shape but he could have been a 1st rounder if he had been at the top of his game.

13 Robert Gsellman , RHP , NYM 19.02 7/18/1993 Right Right 6'4" 210

14 Xorge Carrillo , C , NYM 23.29 4/12/1989 Right Right 6'1" 220

15 Phillip Evans , SS , NYM $650,000 19.87 9/10/1992 Right Right 5'10" 185

Evans got a big payday even though he isn't the toolsiest player in the world. He projects as an average SS or a 2B and his tools will have to play up to make it but he has the instincts and the drive to do it.

16 Bradley Marquez , OF , NYM $325,000 19.61 12/14/1992 Right Right 6'1" 185

17 Jonathan Clark , OF , NYM 21.83 9/28/1990 Left Right 6'1" 180

18 Travis Taijeron , OF , NYM 23.52 1/20/1989 Right Right 6'2" 210

19 Dustin Lawley , OF , NYM 23.29 4/11/1989 Right Right 6'1" 195

21 John Gant , RHP , NYM $185,000 19.97 8/6/1992 Right Right 6'4" 175

23 Jeffrey Diehl , C , NYM $135,000 18.82 9/30/1993 Right Right 6'4" 195

24 William Shepherd , 1B , NYM 22.99 8/1/1989 Right Right 6' 200

26 Casey Hauptman , RHP , NYM 23.57 1/1/1989 Right Right 6'4" 221

27 Randy Fontanez , RHP , NYM 23.19 5/18/1989 Right Right 6'1" 180

31 Chad Zurcher , SS , NYM 23.92 8/25/1988 Right Right 6'1" 170

32 Carlos Leyva , SS , NYM 23.24 4/29/1989 Left Right 5'8" 170

33 Tyson Seng , RHP , NYM 24.98 8/5/1987 Left Right 6'1" 180

34 Jacob Lugo , RHP , NYM 22.69 11/17/1989 Right Right 6'4" 185

35 Chasen Bradford , RHP , NYM 22.98 8/5/1989 Right Right 6'1" 185

36 Ryan Hutson , 1B , NYM 23.85 9/19/1988 Right Right 6'2" 195

37 Craig Missigman , RHP , NYM 18.97 8/5/1993 Right Right 6'4" 175

38 Dustin Emmons , RHP , NYM 22.83 9/26/1989 Right Right 6'1" 205

39 Charles Thurber , OF , NYM 22.58 12/28/1989 Left Left 6'4" 220

41 Mark Picca , LHP , NYM 23.16 5/31/1989 Left Left 6'2" 200

42 Gregory Pron , OF , NYM 23.56 1/3/1989 Right Right 6'6" 195

46 Richard Ruff , RHP , NYM 23.62 12/14/1988 Right Right 6'3" 215

50 Edward Rohan , C , NYM 23.95 8/15/1988 Right Right 6' 205
