Dave Filak is a big right-hander starting pitcher from SUNY Oneonta, otherwise known as Oneonta State in New York. Filak came to Oneonta from Burnt Hills High School in Burnt Hills, New York, a small town about 20 miles north of Albany. Not really recruited much at all out of high school, he landed at Division 3 Oneonta due to its proximity to home. However, he made an immediate impact on his team, and after a pair of dominating years, he took a big step forward this spring with his draft stock. He came out firing a mid-90s fastball in an early-season matchup in Florida, and scouts started flocking to his games. However, he tweaked his elbow fairly early in the season, and while the stuff took a long time to come back, the effect was already there. He settled in to the 90-92 mph range for much of the season after returning from the slight injury, and then bumped it up again to the 92-94 range late in the year. He complements that above-average to plus fastball with a plus to plus-plus curveball that has become one of the better pitches in the entire draft class. He has learned to spot it with ease, which is interesting since he’s fairly new to pitching, having been converted from catcher since arriving on campus. His changeup is a fringe-average pitch that has a chance to get better, but he’s been concentrating on his two pitches so far this year. His ceiling is that of a number two starter, and the only thing holding him back is fringy command. He should be off the board no later than the end of round three.
