Wendell Soto is a high-level defensive player from Riverview High School in Sarasota, Florida. Soto had not been a potential draft prospect entering the season, but he had a nice spring that involved putting together his tools into a productive player. Though he doesn’t have a lot of upside, he does have a high floor, and high school prospects with a high floor are considered decent draft prospects if their ceiling is as a starter. That is the case with him, as he projects to be a starting second baseman at the Major League level, though he’s going to need to go step by step in a minor league system, as his bat needs plenty of work against advanced pitching. At the plate, he’s an average hitter, and even though he was well below-average power, his bat projects to be just fine due to a nice combination of speed and defensive skill. He’s an above-average to plus runner that has really sped his game up this spring, and if he continues to develop some patience with his bat, he could be an on-base/stolen base machine. In the field, he projects to be a plus fielder with a fringe-average arm that should be plenty of arm for second base. He currently plays shortstop, but scouts generally agree that shortstop is not his long-term position, at least in the pros. With his mix of tools and skills, he should be a fifth to eighth round draft prospect, and he’s expected to be signable.
