Leon Landry is an athletic outfielder from Louisiana State University. Landry originally came to LSU from Baker High School in Baker, Louisiana as a third baseman, but he’s been an outfielder ever since he arrived on campus from the small town just 15 miles north of Baton Rouge. He was a solid prospect in high school, and he could have gone in the top dozen rounds had it not been for his commitment to the nearby Tigers. The Reds spent a late-round flier on him anyway, but there was never any intention of giving him his bonus demands. He was a starter as a freshman, and he struggled most of the way, though he showed his plus athleticism at times. He improved as a sophomore, but was pushed to the bench near the end of the year on a talented team that ended up winning the College World Series. He has reestablished value as a junior with a solid year, though, and scouts see him as a potential solid starting center fielder at the next level. At the plate, he’s a solid-average hitter with average power, and he’s an above-average runner with good baserunning instincts. He plays the game hard, and there’s hope that he can become an above-average defender in center field, though his arm is well below-average. He needs to continue to work on refining his solid tools at the pro level, and he’s not a sure thing by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s shown solid year-to-year improvement, and that can be expected to continue at the next level. He could go anywhere from rounds two to four on talent, and he’s expected to sign something in the neighborhood of a slot bonus.
