Chris Hawkins is an athletic infielder from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Hawkins entered the spring as a relatively unknown prospect, but he’s not leaving it that way. Rather, he’s moved into early second-day territory, and don’t forget that the second day starts with the second round this year. His tools are all solid, and even though he’s currently a shortstop, he’s expected to be a third baseman in college. However, many scouts prefer him in center field even though his experience there is limited. With the bat, he features a pair of tools that give him a very high ceiling. His hit tool is above-average, and he hits almost anything thrown at him. He combines that tool with above-average raw power. He knows when to swing for the fences and when to drive it into the gaps, and as he fills out, he could be quite a hitter. He’s also a plus runner, so if he incorporates his feel for the game on the basepaths as well as he does at the plate, he’s going to be a special player. Defensively, his feel for the game is much less advanced, and his hands and actions aren’t good enough for shortstop. He has a plus arm, which is why a number of people have predicted a move to third. However, center field would take advantage of his athleticism, his bat would be premium at that position, and he could be an average defender there if he worked on his routes. He has been the definition of a pop-up prospect this spring, and while he could go in the second round, he fits better in the third to fifth round, which will still be high enough to buy him away from Tennessee.
