Ryan LaMarre is a fast-rising outfield prospect from the University of Michigan. LaMarre originally came to Michigan from Lumen Christi High School in Jackson, Michigan. Though he wasn’t seen as a big-time prospect coming out of high school, scouts knew who he was, and he’s been a solid contributor for the Wolverines. He came into the spring looking like a potential third to fifth round prospect, but with a lot of hard work, he’s made himself into a potential first day pick. This comes despite the fact that he missed almost a month with a broken thumb suffered playing defense in the first weekend of the year. Since returning, he’s been one of the country’s best players, and his tools make him look like a potential solid center fielder at the next level. At the plate, he’s a right-handed hitter with potential to be a plus hitter with average raw power. When his plus to plus-plus speed is added in, he becomes a high-level offensive prospect. One concern this spring is the fact that he hasn’t been taking many pitches, which is a departure from his history, but scouts aren’t overly concerned about it, saying that he’ll return to normal, hopefully with the same aggressiveness in the zone. In the field, he’s currently the left fielder for the Wolverines, but he has center field tools, including above-average range and an average arm. Some scouts even predict he’ll be a plus defender with time to adjust to playing back up the middle again. He could go as high as the end of the first round, but it’s more likely he’s picked in the supplemental first round or second round, where he should be signable for slot money.
