1s.45 Texas Rangers - Luke Jackson, RHP, Calvary Christian HS (FL)

The Rangers selected Luke Jackson. Here's his profile:

Luke Jackson   Position: RHP   School: Calvary Christian HS   State: FL   Height: 6’2’’   Weight: 180

Birth Date: 8/24/91   Seiler Rating: 2C1   Commitment: Miami

Luke Jackson is an athletic, powerful right-handed pitcher from Calvary Christian High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Jackson is one of the most improved pitchers in the country over the last twelve months, and he could see that improvement pay out in terms of draft position this year. Not exceptionally tall or projectable, he features good current stuff and velocity, and he’s already seen the velocity bump that has to be projected with so many other high school pitchers. Lack of an exceptional second pitch is what keeps him from being a true first round prospect, but he’s a solid arm nonetheless, and he’ll get drafted as a potential number three starter. His fastball, which is already plus by most standards, can sit 91-94, touching 96, and while his command of it is below-average, he’s shown enough promise with his mechanics that scouts think his command will improve with pro instruction. He’s athletic for a pitcher, so that should help his chances of repeating his delivery. His second pitch is a potential above-average to plus curveball that is graded purely on future promise rather than current consistency. He is the type of pitcher who snaps off one wicked curveball after four mediocre ones, and that inconsistency is what plagues his draft stock. His changeup is a future average pitch, and it should be good enough to make him a solid pitcher. Since he’s a little more risky than the average high school arm, his draft stock is down in the third to fifth round territory, and his Miami commitment means he’ll likely need an over slot bonus in that range.
