1.18 Los Angeles Angels - Kaleb Cowart, RHP, Cook County HS (GA)

The Angels selected Kaleb Cowart. Here's his profile:

Kaleb Cowart   Position: RHP/3B   School: Cook County HS   State: GA   Height: 6’3’’   Weight: 190

Bats: B   Throws: R   Birth Date: 6/2/92   Seiler Rating: 1B1   Commitment: Florida State

Kaleb Cowart is a strong two-way prospect from Cook High School in Adel, Georgia, a small town near Valdosta and about 200 miles straight down I-75 from Atlanta. A strong draft prospect both as a pitcher and hitter, scouts are split on whether they prefer Cowart as a power-hitting third baseman or a power-pitching right-handed starter. At the plate, Cowart is a switch-hitter, a rarity for an elite prep bat. He features a solid-average hit tool that projects fairly well, but the draw is his power from both sides of the plate. It can be rated as above-average to plus depending on who you talk to, though he’s more aggressive from the right side, from which he shows better natural power. He projects as a plus defender at third base, too, featuring a plus arm and great hands, though his range and speed are both average to fringe-average, the reason he’ll move off his current position of shortstop as a pro. He’s a solid athlete overall, which helps his pitching, too. On the mound, he has number two starter potential, perhaps a bit more if you believe in his projection. He’s a solid 92-94 mph pitcher with average life, and his curveball is an above-average second pitch in the low- to mid-70s, touching 76. He has thrown a changeup before, and it’s a fringe-average pitch in the low-80s, though he doesn’t throw it much, especially against weak competition in his area of Georgia. He’s committed to Florida State, and that could be a bit of a factor, as he’s reportedly asked for a large bonus, but should go in the middle of the first round, depending on which teams believe in him as a hitter or pitcher, as he’s expressed a desire to remain a hitter at the next level.
