Zach Alvord is a familiar name to those that have been following this class for a few years. He’s been near the top of lists for a few years now and with good reason. Alvord currently profiles as an offense-first second baseman, though he currently has just enough range to stick at shortstop. He features an above-average arm at short as it is, so it would be plus from the right side of the infield. His actions up the middle are solid, and the only thing holding him back from being a long-term shortstop is lack of lateral range. If he fills out any more, which he profiles to do, then the range won’t be as good, and second base will almost certainly be in his future. At the plate, Alvord has a solid hit tool which rates out as average, and his power rates out as a future average grade, too, which is above-average for a middle infielder. On the mound, Alvord features an upper-80s fastball, peaking around 91, along with a slow curve and change, both of which are currently below-average. His future is in the field for most teams, and he’s likely a second to fourth round pick. His Auburn commitment is a bit of a challenge, as Auburn’s in his family blood, but he should be signable in the first three rounds.
