Brad Holt
I know the Mets took some criticism for possibly overdrafting him, but with his start tonight he has been excellent for Brooklyn of the New York-Penn League
Including tonight (he is done after 6 innings):
2-2, 1.57 ERA, 7 G, 7 GS, 34 1/3 IP, 20 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 14 BB, 51 K
His BAA was .182 going into tonight and will likely decrease since, through 6 innings, he has only allowed 2 hits (while walking 2 and striking out 14)

Baseball America names their All America teams
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/awards/all-america-teams/2008/266322.html
This link is to the first team only. As a Mets fan, I am thrilled that we drafted two guys who made the first team (Ike Davis and Josh Satin).
For the rest of the All America Teams:

Looking at the All America Teams there looks like some intriguing college bats at the top of the 2009 Draft
Enjoy!

MOD - Mets Part II
Rather than have to scour through all of the Fanposts in order to get to the discussion for the Mets picks I figured I would start a new thread. Just to let everyone know, I have promised the scouting director that I will try to be as realistic as possible. That means all college relievers with control issues who will sign for slot money because we do not want to annoy Bud Selig. Just kidding!

Mets trade for Jeff Conine
According to an article I saw on another website, the Mets have obtained Conine for minor leaguers Jose Castro and Sean Henry. The Mets definitely needed another bat to face lefties with Easley done for the year, but it appears the Mets dealt more for Conine than they did for Luis Castillo. Jose Castro is undersized, but he is hitting for a high average in the Florida State League at age 20 and does not K that much. Sean Henry was a sleeper who really came on this year and showed a lot of upside. While I know the Mets are deep with OF prospects I just think that if Henry could replicate his success at AA next year he would have garnered a lot more in return and it was not like Conine was the only righty bat on the market

Brian Bannister dealt for Ambiorix Burgos
Nice deal for the Mets as the Mets have a number of starters ahead of Bannister and without the pressure to be a closer from Day 1, Burgos will have a chance to develop a bit and will hopefully be the answer once Wagner's contract is up a couple of years from now. Discuss

Fantasy Baseball Question
Currently there are a number of good, young SP's available on Waivers in my fantasy league. The top two are Lester and Billingsley. I have #2 waiver priority, but the #1 guy is not active when it comes to add/drops. From having spoken to other GMs, if I pick up Lester, there is no chance of me landing Billingsley. However, if I land Billingsley, I might be able to get someone like Jackson of Milwaukee who may fall through the cracks and become a Free Agent. This leads to the central question: Should I pick up Lester or Billignsley?

Cubs welch on promise to Brandon Belt
http://www.lufkindailynews.com/sports/content/sports/highschools/belt.html
According to the article, the Cubs promised Belt and his family that they would take him sometime during the 6th-9th rounds and that Chicago would pay him a bonus commensurate with a sandwich round pick. Because of this, Belt passed up a chance to go to the Astros for 2nd Round money. In the end, Rounds 6-9 passed and Chicago had not selected Belt

Mets Mock Draft Recap
2/62 Jered Hughes/RHP/Long Beach State
3/94 Carmine Giardina/LHP/Durant HS (FL)
4/124 John Shelby/2B/Kentucky
5/154 Shane Keough/OF/Yavapai JC
Although this draft lacks the high end talent of other drafts in recent memory, it stil would have been nice to have a first round pick. If the Mets still had the 18th pick I probably would have taken either Hank Conger, David Huff, or Brett Anderson. Now on to the actual Mets picks. The Mets scouting staff was pleasantly surprised to see Hughes available at #62. As the pick approached, Hughes emerged as the top rated player on our draft board. Offers nice size and solid off-speed options. Might not have the upside to be a top of the rotation starter, but looks like a pretty decent bet to be a solid, back of the rotation innings eater. Not a bad selection for mid-Round 2. In Round 3 we decided to go the opposite route, a projectable HS LHP. As is, Giardina shows the potential to miss a number of bats with the excellent movement on his pitches, especially his fastball and curveball. A bit of a signability question, but without a first the Mets can afford him. With the final 2 picks, the Mets went after bloodlines. Despite some recent draft picks, the Mets depth at MI in the minors needs a lot of improvement. Although he struggled as a Junior, John Shelby regained some of his form late in the year and if he can develop a bit more power he is a 5 tool player. I am also a bit partial to those with relatives who have played in the majors because they have a better understanding of how major league life is. The Mets concluded by taking OF Shane Keough out of Yavapai JC, the son of former major leaguer and Oakland front office man Matt Keough. Keough is a bit raw with his bat, but that is more a product of missing 2 years in High School. The improvement he showed, especially when it came to strike zone judgment, over the course of this past season indicates to me that with professional coaching it will develop even further. Despite not having a 1st Round pick in this draft, I think the Mets made out rather well

Mets continue to deal
Jeremi Gonzalez...DFA...Good Riddance
In addition, the Mets made their second trade in as many days. This time they sent A-Ball Pitcher Robert Manuel to the Reds for Dave Williams. Manuel breezed through the GCL last year after signing out of Sam Houston State. I do not think he has pitched yet this season. Likely to be nothing more than organizational roster filler. Dave Williams can't be any worse than Gonzalez or Jose Lima
