Ty Wigginton traded for Dan Wheeler

According to Rotoworld.com.  I hope no one is writing this as I am making the post.  Personally I think this is just what the Rays needed, and I applaud them on the trade, and I like him more than Scott Proctor.  Not too bad from the Astros point of view either.  Will Wheeler become the closer in TB?

Wiggy
What role does he fill in Houston?

I like the addition of Wheeler for the Rays.

Super-Utility
Give him starts at 1st, 2nd & 3rd and maybe even the OF.  Mahalo

3rd Base
This way the 'stros can prepare for the post-Ensberg phase. Loretta can stay a utility infielder and Wigginton is locked up until '09 I believe. Just a possibility.

Why do they think they can win
man they are out of it, there is like a 1% chance of them getting back into it. I wonder if they are they trying to use Wiggy as a piece to get Milledge,Gomez,Humber,or Pelfrey in a package for Qualls or Lidge.  That could be a good idea for Houston to try to pry Gomez or Milledge off of the Mets since they need a true centerfielder.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 28, 2007 7:24 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I doubt it
As I don't see the Astros trading two relievers, but it is a strange trade for them. I don't see what Wigginton offers. I think your reasoning is correct though, but I don't think the Mets are the team. The only thing that makes sense to me is that a 3-team could not be pulled off quite yet and Wigginton will be spun off for someone else that Wheeler was not able to land them.

by andwoo on Jul 28, 2007 7:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually, it makes me think
that Loretta will be traded rather than Wigginton. After thinking it through more, they are more likely to get more back, so maybe the Mets are a likely team, but not for a reliever, but for Loretta. Milledge won't go for him, but maybe Gomez, or some combination of AA & A ball players.

by andwoo on Jul 28, 2007 7:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

LOL Loretta for Gomez
That would be a ripoff for the Astros.  They would have to add Wandy for that to possibly happen.

He's better than Sosa
The Mets need to do something though, their Pen is falling apart now with Felciano struggling.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 28, 2007 9:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sosa
Sosa has only been starting this year, and he hasn't even been that bad

by Maverick on Jul 28, 2007 10:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

everyone has back
to back rough outings every now and then his era was 3.80 or so before these 2 outings

by Maverick on Jul 28, 2007 10:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah but he's due to implode
He did that last year, and his K/9 and BB/9 are bad this year.  He was a one month mirage.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 28, 2007 10:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wandy is better?
Wandy had his best start ever against the Mets when he shut us out, so you want to trade away a bat to get him?

Wandy + Loretta is totally not worth Gomez, and I can't believe you don't see it! hahahaha

"due"
you'll someday learn a wise old saying from Vegas... "never bet the due"

by Maverick on Jul 29, 2007 12:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That is not the proper use of that saying
betting the due has everything to do with the human habit of trying to find a pattern in random variation, you expect a number to hit when it hasn't in while it still has the same chance as every other option.

In this case, we have an expected level of performance, a non-random level of ability. Choose whatever you want FIP, peripherals, or even career ERA, Sosa is not a 3.80 ERA pitcher. These past starts have gotten him closer to hit expected value, but if you disregard 2005 as an outlier, your looking at more regression in store.

Bravesin07 isn't betting the due, he is betting the smart odds

only after
they trade reyes, it seems tampa doesn't like middle infielders today. Could this mean we see Longoria very soon, I think that is the better prospect question.

Longoria should be up in September
I think they will try to do what they did with Delmon last year.

RotoWorld
Thinks he will setup.  I, however, am thinking that he's probably the best long-term option at closer that the Rays have.  In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if they traded Reyes if they could get something worthwhile back...
Bravesin07 is so damn reactionary. I bet when his mother took him to the Dr., his leg kicked before the Dr. hit his knee with the reflex hammer. --slurve

No surprise...
again, the stros waste what little they have to get nothing. Kudos Astros! Who's our best prospect? Who are our best players under 30?

Given the piss poor way management has dealt with tradable players and their budget, I'm afraid with the current front office that this team is going to be terrible for a long long time.

by beastball on Jul 28, 2007 8:09 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

best player under 30
Jason jennings perhaps? What a steal he was!

Actually the answer is pence, but yeah, their front office sucks and it might be a while before they are anything.

Jack Cust is this year's Marcus Thames

tampa's bullpen
I know the conventional wisdom is that Reyes is gone.  But it's not like Tampa is dealing from strength yet -- two decent relievers is still too few in the AL East.  Keep Reyes and Wheeler both and go shopping for live arms in the offseason.

by whichthat on Jul 28, 2007 8:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Trade Reyes
The guy is 37 years old, you have to get something for him.  He could blow out his shoulder again and that would be it.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 28, 2007 8:45 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What's irritating...
is that the DRays have plenty of young talent that we could've traded for instead of a borderline AAAA player. Even if we pass over their top flight pitching prospects, like Davis, Niemann or McGee, they have some second tier guys who are worth a flier, like Sonnanstine or even Howell.

Hell, I'd loved to have taken Dukes off their hands!

Instead, we get Wiggy, what a load of crap. Wheeler was one of the few marketable players we have.

Yeah, we have Pence, Oswalt, and then a bunch of crap.

by beastball on Jul 28, 2007 9:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Borderline AAAA
He is a guy who consistently puts up a 105 OPS+ and can play 4 defensive positions.  That seems like a major leaguer to me. Plus, he has another year to go before free agency, so he would help in the future.

irrelevant rant
watching the d rays game tonight, and what a pathetic excuse for a team. did management just unilaterally declare that defense doesn't matter? granted crawford isn't playing, but except for Iwamura, they are uniformly awful. Gomes plays left field like a little leaguer, upton and delmon young are a bit better, but still don't know how to take a straight line to a ball. Harris is a simple joke at SS, I don't know who's playing 2B, but he sucks. And Pena -- who I would expect would be okay -- let a dribbler (well, i exaggerate, but this is a rant....) get by him for a double.

josh paul seems ok behind the plate.

for all the talk about this club needing pitching, why doesn't management put out a team that can field? a complete and utter joke. I feel like i'm watching Vero Beach rather than Tample Bay.

and, by the way, the poor D-Rays pitchers, their stats should all have an asterisk stating that their ERAs would be half as much as they actually are if they had major leaguers behind them.

i guess i'm in the minority
but i thought it was an an okay trade for both sides.  It's always hard to guess the reliever trade market/interest.  Could the Astros have gotten better?  Perhaps, who knows, though.  Wheeler's been worked really hard for the last couple years as well.

While Wigginton isn't anything special, he does upgrade at 3rd for them in 2008.  They can find someone to split time with Lamb in the OF (or give Lamb the RF job), have Berkman at first, give Burke a look at 2nd (perhaps add a veteran to compete, but veteran 2nd baseman can be found).  Add in Pence/Lee, and the offense looks improved, and you can spend your assets (cash or talent) to focus on upgrading the pitching.  It gives them an outside chance at competing in the NL next year ... and yet, it doesn't really harm any long term plans either if it doesn't work.

agreed
Not sure why people are so low on Wiggy.

A guy that can play 2B, 3B, 1B, and OF that hits around 20-25 homers in less than a full season with an 800 OPS is pretty solid. He's 29 years old and a great clubhouse guy that plays any position you ask him.

Chopped liver he's not.

+1 re Wiggy
Seems to me that the D'Rays gave up quite a bit for a guy who hasn't proven that he could be a consistant closer.

Mike Lamb
Nobody mentioned Mike Lamb yet. Wiggy makes a better corner infielder than 2nd baseman, so maybe Lamb is being shopped around.

I would love him on Atlanta
He would fill the first base spot fine.  Then the braves can trade Salty for pitching help.

Update
Ensberg DFA'd today to make room for Wiggy.

Leaves me scratching my head, as I'd think there would still be some trade value left in Morgan, but perhaps not.

by Yakker on Jul 29, 2007 1:16 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Can Ensberg play 1st
I'd like to have the Braves pick him up for cheap instead of getting rid of 3 prospects for a slightly overrated 1st baseman.
