DRAFT DAY OPEN THREAD

Open Thread for Draft Day

I will be very busy today, on XM much of the afternoon, analyzing the first round for Rotowire, doing my Twins Shadow Draft. Busiest day of the year...and the best.

Use this thread to discuss the pre-draft rumors. I will open a new thread for active discussion of the draft itself once it begins.

I will go on record now...
As a Yankee fan, if somehow they end up with Porcello and he becomes the star that most envision, it just perpetuates the notion that the MLB draft is a sham... The fact that possibly the best pitcher in the draft (2nd at worst) is going to drop as far as he will is bad enough. It should be a great day, but bonus demands/agents ruin this day for me. KC should really have Porcello if they want him and they can't do it because Scott Boras is doing "what's best for his client."

I'll say it again... this is why the NFL is a better league even though it is not the better game. Their draft never has these issues.

It is a shame.

Didn't the Texans
blow the number one pick last year because of signablility issues?

It's been one year
It's silly to say anyone "blew" a pick after one season.  Mario Williams could easily turn into Julius Peppers, while Bush could end up as a glorified Dave Meggett.

by eazyb81 on Jun 7, 2007 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea and...
Reggie could more easily become Barry Sanders than Dave Meggett, while even if Mario Williams became Julius Peppers he wouldn't have the impact on a game that Reggie or most good RBs would. With that said there is no way to justify that pick, signability or not.

by JD Sussman on Jun 7, 2007 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks Miss Cleo
Glad to know that Bush has a greater chance to become Barry Sanders, arguably the most electric RB of all-time, than Dave Meggett, given his stellar 3.6 ypc last year.

Anyways, Houston still could have taken Bush if they wanted him, but they chose Williams because they thought he would make a greater impact on their team than a scatback like Bush. It had nothing to do with being unable to afford him, as the NFL has a salary cap and full revenue sharing.  What a concept!

Calling me Miss Cleo?
You were the one making the comparisons. If you think Reggie's impact on the game is messured by his 3.6 Yards Per Carry than you don't know much about football or just don't watch the Saints at all. I doubt he becomes Barry Sanders but he wont be a bust. Meggett is a bad comp only because he was a 5th rounder not someone with the hype Bush had. Although similar type players for sure.

I didn't say that Williams was a signability issue. I said regardless of if he was or not, it was a horrible decision for that pick. Williams could be great but still wont have the impact of an offensive skill player. He had a terrible Rookie Year anyway. For a number 1 pick overall you expect more than 4.5 sacks.

by JD Sussman on Jun 7, 2007 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Re:
A RB like Bush will not have the type of impact that a pass-rushing beast of DE would have on the NFL, period.  If you question that I wonder about how well you differentiate the pro game and what Sportscenter stuffs down our throat.  Bush if flashy but has not proven a thing in the NFL, just like Peppers.  Saying either one is a bust at this point is stupid, but using Barry Sanders as a comp for Bush is downright silly at this stage.

You responded to a line of posts that originally started when someone said Houston passed on Bush because of signability.  Thus, I could only assume you believed that was the case as well.  If you agree that signability wasn't the reason they chose Williams over Bush, then we are going back and forth for no reason.

by eazyb81 on Jun 7, 2007 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

sorry if you misunderstood
But I didn't agree with him, nor did I say Bush would be Barry Sanders, my point was supposed to be satirical. Refering to the Meggett comment because I don't believe Bush will be that bad, he has a better shot of being a Barry Sanders than being that bad.

I agree that Bush hasn't proven anything, but he has  ability I don't think you can deny that.

An NFL draftee falling 1 spot possibly for signability issues is not comparable to MLB draftee falling 28 spots to the Yankees. That would be a sham. I don't think it's going to unfold that way today though.

NBA does it best
The NFL may have the most successful league, but the NBA by far has the best draft system (both in terms of entertainment and fairness). The slotting in the NBA is fixed (not recommended like in MLB), so teams decide purely based on TALENT. And that talent always goes to the teams that need it the most. A 60 win team will never get a shot at a Tim Duncan caliber prospect unless it trades for it (which isn't likely to happen).

by parrot11 on Jun 7, 2007 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think that's exactly right
I don't think the NBA is perfect, either.

It may be changing with the 1 yr post-high school rule, but NBA teams are still going to draft guys like Marvin Williams, and see them become stars with other teams after their first contract is done. Like McGrady and Jermaine O'Neal.

by TC Chris on Jun 7, 2007 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

screw slotting
Why shouldnt players be able to seek as much money as they can? Baseball is VERY different from other sports. For a lot of the guys who get drafted today this is the last big paycheck they will ever recieve. A large portion of them will never get a big league contract and wont make the bigs, so let the guys get as much money as teams are willing to give them when they are drafted.

Just abolish slotting completely let people shoot for as much money as they want. Any team can afford a 10 million dollar bonus. That buys you 6 years of this player, how many crappy major leaguers make more then that? Let teams complain about draft bonuses but they cost nothing compared to free agency

But KC can complain about bonuses all they want but they gave Meche 11 million a year. Porcello wants 10 and that buys the first 6 years of his career. If they really dont have the money then its smarter to pass on Meche and take that 11 mil a year and sign two very good players in the draft each year

by Kanst42 on Jun 7, 2007 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

WTF?
Meche is a pro baseball player!  How on earth do you compare him to Porcello?  How many 1st round picks even make it to the majors, let alone have a solid career?  Elite prospects flame out all the time, every year - it makes no sense to mortgage your entire draft on one high school pitcher.

Wow
THAT would be an interesting pick if they pass on on guys with decent ceilings at greater need positions.

by siddfynch on Jun 7, 2007 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's his reasoning...
St. Louis has kept its intentions closer to the vest than any club. The Cardinals like college players with a strong track record of performance, and they haven't shied away from Boras clients in the past. That makes Wieters an obvious choice if he gets this far, and Florida first baseman Matt LaPorta fits the profile if Wieters isn't around. Porcello is another Boras client who would be a steal this low, but it's uncertain the Cardinals would shell out big money for a high school pitcher. Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) third baseman/first baseman Beau Mills has some advantages over LaPorta: He hits lefthanded, has a chance to play third base and may not cost as much. St. Louis also has looked at college arms such as UC Riverside righthander James Simmons, Cal State Fullerton righty Wes Roemer, San Francisco lefty Aaron Poreda and Hagadone.

And that's with Mather moving to the OF (but probably being a closet 1B).

I'm a big fan of grabbing the best bat (or arm) available, but at what point to you get concerned about being overstocked with guys at the lowest end of the defensive spectrum?

there are too many teams with good relationships with Boras and semi deep pockets for a talent like Porcello to drop that far. I can't imagine that happening.

Cards
don't like to shell out loads of money for unproven high schoolers.  They like proven college players with a good track record.

by adschofield on Jun 7, 2007 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

True...
But a position player is a lot less risky than a pitcher.  Also, Rasmus got a a 1 million dollar deal, while Porcello wants a 10 million dollar deal.

by adschofield on Jun 7, 2007 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I wasn't fair.
But if a HS talent that they believe in falls to them, I don't think they will dismiss it out of hand.  I don't want to start a fight with Cards fans, but I'm not sure the strict college approach has paid off for them.  So, there might be a correction coming.

When they took Rasmus, they also took a HS pitcher in the supplemental or 2nd round, Tyler Herron.

Now, the $10M might be a big stickler, but it might also be a completely unsubstantiated rumor or a bluff.  I mean why not aim high?

by cooper7d7 on Jun 7, 2007 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying
that the Cardinals will not draft a HS player.  I'm just saying that shelling out 10 million dollars for a HS pitcher is the complete opposite of their draft philosophy.  I find it hard to believe that the Cards will go from one end of the spectrum to another.

by adschofield on Jun 7, 2007 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

They have also played it VERY close to the vest...
Meaning anything is possible with their #18 pick.  I gotta imagine they will consider Porcello if he falls that far.  After all, they did go into the last 2 offseasons with a larger budget than what they spent, meaning there theoretically SHOULD be some $$ left over

by guru4u on Jun 7, 2007 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Cardinals
The Cards actually like to dish out the dough for high schoolers later on the draft.

They gave like 350K to Tommy Pham who was taken in the 15th round or so.  They have also given nice size bonuses to Jon Edwards and Shaun Garceau.  Both were taken after round 10.  They also weren't too worried about taking Daryl Jones despite huge signability concerns.

I would not be surprised if Porcello, Harvey or Wieters were taken by the Cardinals if they fall.

by UncleBuck44 on Jun 7, 2007 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Well
There's a lot of discussion out there that Luhnnow isn't locked into that, per se, and that this could be a very good year to go the HS route.

We'll see, obviously, but it sounds like we shouldn't automatically discount HSers in these little pre-draft musings.

Seems like a pretty lame strategy to base your draft choice on the fact you'd prefer a senior college relief pitcher not land in the division. Hell, alot of these college reliever 1st round picks haven't made the quick impact they were supposedly capable of. For every Chad Cordero there have been many more CHansen, RWagner and Brays.

Vitters has LF or RF potential, and could be a plus hitter...BUT I fell for the early pitching talent pretty hard PLUS I don't think he projects at a premium position well enough for a top 3 pick.

I think if you're picking in the top 3, you go for talent at a prime position. Vitters isn't one of those gys. Going after Weiters for a plus hitter would have been better IMO.

On one thing, that Wieters would have been a better selection.  He would have filled a big need very quickly.  Another thing is that Vitters is NOT Brackman or Doolittle too.  ;)

I also think it's very premature to assume that Josh won't stick at third.  He's taller, more athletic and a better defender than Moutsakas.  That is truly the guy without a position, not Josh.  By the time he's ready, A-Ram will be on his last legs and Josh should step right in.

Finally, a guy who's 6'3", 185 with plus-plus hand-eye coordination and plus-plus bat speed.  After he matures into his body and adds 20-30 pounds of muscle, he's going to be a monster with those short power alleys in Wrigley.  I have no doubt he'll rake at the highest level.  Mahalo
