#32
Giants select Wendell Fairley, of
George County-Lucedale (Miss.) HS

Bit of a reach here
care to comment on your reasons?

by MikeE on Jun 3, 2007 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true, but
I also expected him to fall further, but Fairley seems exactly like the kind of player who is hard to place in the draft. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he went in the supplemental round or in the tenth round later this week depending on how teams assess his makeup, signability, ability to translate tools into performance, etc. There's room for lots of variance in assessing him.

And it's known that the Giants are looking at Fairley, so this isn't unreasonable.

by FI on Jun 3, 2007 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just think that
he'd still have been available at 43 or even 51.
Mike Emeigh http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/minor_key/

agree
Agreed - I forgot about those later picks.

by FI on Jun 3, 2007 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

explanation
I was looking for the highest ceiling position player and it was him or Burgess.  Positional scarcity was important for me and the possibility of Fairley becoming a plus offensive player in CF was too much to pass up.  Its a boom/bust pick.

You're probably right I could have nabbed him 43, if not 51, but I didn't want to take the chance.

by MPK on Jun 3, 2007 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm OK With It
For some reason, the name Wendell Fairley keeps conjuring up memories of Arturo McDowell, but you covered yourself with the Brown pick at #22.  That made it possible to roll the dice a bit in the supplemental.  Fairley is a high risk/high reward pick.  With the 6 picks and what you've done with them so far, it's an acceptable risk.

Burgess
Great pick, from what I've heard he's not far behind Jackson who was picked in the first round.

by natsprospects26 on Jun 3, 2007 4:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

burgess has lighttower power, and a cannon of an
arm, but i think he'll struggle badly to hit for average.

by overlord on Jun 3, 2007 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

jackson/burgess
Two very different players. Burgess needs to iron out his swing and start making more contact. If he can do that, he'll hit for big time power.

Jackson has a nice line drive swing and hasn't struggled like Burgess has in his senior year. Not as high an upside offensively, but less risk. Being a good defender at a premium position definitely tilts the scale firmly in Jackson's favor.

Another Good Pick
After taking Bumgarner and Griffith in the first round, you needed a polished college pitcher and Simmons is the quintessential polished college pitcher.  I might have preferred Nick Schmidt,  but he was gone at #31 and I'm happier with Griffith at #29.

ramirez
baseball america had him ranked 36th in their last draft tracker.  i think it's a very solid pick.

by fewgoodcards on Jun 3, 2007 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ramirez
Ramirez was one of three prep pitchers at the top of my board that I had ranked about equally.  I think he has the most developed repertoire of the three and the fact that he's a (semi) local product tipped the scales for me.

by birdtown on Jun 3, 2007 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sounds Good
He was nails on the showcase circuit last year, it just seemed like he fell off a bit this year.  He definitely has a fair amount of upside.

Cool!
Would have liked another hitter here, but the only one picked subsequently so far that appeals to me is Mattair.  I might have gone with him here,  but Blair is a solid pick.  Can't find anyone picked after this except Mattair who I would have preferred.

I guess we're out until round 5 now?  Nice job.  I hope Sabean does this well in the real draft.
