what prompted the change of heart?  I thought you were big on Porcello

by adschofield on Jun 3, 2007 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

safety
The more I thought about it, Porcello is such a huge gamble at #2 overall, while Wieters has a nice combo of safety and upside.

In real life I probably wouldn't take Wieters if I was running KC's draft due to signability concerns, but we don't have to worry about that here.

Heyward or Detwiler
It's a close call, in my mind. I just feel the Rockies need more high ceiling, athletic, toolsy outfielders and Heyward is one.

I really think Price is going to be the college stud and Heyward is going to be the high school stud out of this draft.

by robb @ Minor League Ball on Jun 3, 2007 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

i'm not a huge fan of borbon's
but that could be colored by the fact that there is a legitimate chance the phils will take him at 19.  with the depth the phillies have at CF, i'd really hate to see them take borbon when they could nab a better college bat like frazier or kulbacki, or maybe a prep pitcher like bumgarner, smoker, or alderson.

Jackson, Noonan, and Alderson way too high. Beavan and Burbon have been excellent value picks thus far.  Should be interesting to see how far Brackman slides

Beau Mills
He was taken too high in my opinion

by adschofield on Jun 3, 2007 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Mills
Let's revisit this comment at this time next year :)

by birdtown on Jun 3, 2007 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

what is the knock against jackson?
he's got all 5 tools, and has actually exhibited them in HS.  he hit .550 with 28 XBH in 95 AB  at TC roberson.  he also had 21 SB without being caught, and 14:6 BB:K ratio.

i think the only reason that he's dropped to this point is because of draft fatigue.   this is the third year in a row that scouts have been at his games, being there last year to see josh thrailkill, and the year before to see cameron maybin.  i think he's a legitimate hitter, and, even though he's toolsy, i would be happy to see him drafted by the phillies, even if it is at 19.

by overlord on Jun 3, 2007 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Mcgeary
I would have went with Mcgeary over Alderson personally, I see Alderson as a fringe 1st round guy.

by natsprospects26 on Jun 3, 2007 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

alderson
6'7, durable his whole career, repeats his delivery extremely well with athleticism, excelled in showcases, impeccable control, reaches 96 with his heater, knockout slider, unique player who is a tough competitor.

thats why i picked him.

by npurcell on Jun 3, 2007 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

mcgeary
you would rather have mcgeary and his mid 80's fastball over alderson and his low to mid 90's heater, good slider, and excellent control?

risky, but makes sense
I wouldn't want to be one taking Brackman, but this kind of risky pick makes some sense for a team like the Yankees. They can afford to take a risk here and supplement their draft with high-quality talent that other teams cannot afford to sign away later in the draft.
