MOD Yanks, Part II

Only 2 days until the big event, so it's time to get down to business. Remember, Max Scherzer and Matt Latos signed with the D-Backs and Padres respectively, so they're out of play.

Guys I like are Corey Brown, Will Middlebrooks and Pete Kozma - you gotta love those premium up-the-middle athletes.

Anyone have anything on UNC closer Andrew Carignan? I can't seem to find much on him, but he's been money this year. Cheaper and safer alternative to Casey Weathers I believe.

So,who do y'all like/have in mind?

While I don't know
a ton about the draftees...
In the early rounds I'd aim at college bats that seem able to make the transition to wood.  Having some useful players hit the Bronx by 2009 would be a plus.  We've got enough pitchers with a 2008-09 ETA.
For the late rounds I'd aim at whatever high school pitchers were left.

Saw Carigan
Pitch the other day on TV. While I wanted to be impressed and he doeshave a nice fastball (touched 95) I see nothing about him (or Weathers for that matter) that shows me he can be a closer in the bigs. I dont think hes a better talent than Chris Britton. If I was you I wouldnt evn think about him until the 3rd maybe, 4th round.

I agree with jscape
I believe the yankees could most definitely use some good bats, especially in the infield. At the corners, Duncan is looking more and more like a bust, and while Hilligoss and Vechionacci are impressing, I just don't see them being more than utility players in the pros. But also be wary of the Yankees failures at drafting hitters recently, ie Shelley Duncan and Bronson Sardinha. As you wrote before, a middle infielder could also be targeted for there are no real prospects there since CJ Henry was traded. if youre fine with drafting a Boras client go for LaPorta in my opinion or if a middle infielder Kozma.

LaPorta?
He's a R/R first basemen. Not many of those guys succeed.

Shy away from a Boras client? Ha, I laugh in the face of Scott Boras!

Furbush would be a great pick...
...in the 3rd round.

In a "normal" year, he'd probably be a late sandwich/early second round guy. But with so many quality college LHPs, he could slip through the cracks.

I'll have my eye out for him on Sunday.

Up the middle
I'd stay away from LaPorta, or any other hitter that won't be able to play a premium defensive position at the major league level. Finding free agents to play on the corners isn't that hard with the Yankees' money, but pitchers and guys up the middle are a lot harder. There's a particular need for catchers, and to that end Devin Mesoraco would be a perfect first pick, but it'll be a miracle if he's still available.

I think a really good first round pick would be Andrew Brackman out of North Carolina. He's got fantastic stuff, and was projected to be a top ten pick, but he might fall all the way down after being shut down the last month of the season with a tired arm. He's an injury risk, but could be a steal at #30 the way Joba Chamberlain was. I know we've got plenty of pitchers, but I don't think you can ever have too much.

I like Russell...
...but I don't think he's one of the 30 best players in the draft.

Other first rounders
Another couple of guys I like for the first round pick are Tim Alderson and Travis d'Arnaud.

Alderson's probably the better pick, a big righty with four solid pitches and ludicrous command (in his senior and junior years he walked all of 10 batters against 182 strikeouts). He'll probably still be available because his delivery is kind of strange (he pitches exclusively out of the stretch), but he's open to change and you can't argue with the results.

d'Arnaud will probably be the best catcher left, but would probably be and overdraft in the first round, but he won't be there by the time our second pick comes around, which is why I mention him. We're probably better off using the first round pick for the best player available, which I think will be Alderson or Brackman, but he's a guy worth keeping in mind.

Wow
I didn't know Alderson had that kinda command. I'm sure Nardi could do wonders with him.

There's alot of quality catchers in the draft, I think it'd be best to hold of on drafting one until the 2nd or possibly even 3rd round. There's no sense in overdrafting a guy because of position.

What's your take on Burgess and Justin Jackson?
People seem to be down on Burgess and Jackson lately, but Burgess has great power potential, and Jackson is supposed to be a great athlete.  They were both considered top 10 high school players a few months ago, but they seem to have dropped.  I think either of these guys could be good high-upside picks at 30.
