Andrew Brackman

Thinking About Andrew Brackman

His place in the draft is very unclear at this point, and he's going through a "dead arm" period right now according to Baseball America. I know for a fact that many of the more stat-oriented teams are wary of him due to his OK but not great numbers for NC State this year. He went 6-4, 3.81 in 78 innings with a 74/37 K/BB and 78 hits allowed. . .his batting average against was .264 against a team average of .251. His strikeout rate was above average for context but not spectacular. Overall, the results are OK but they don't match the glowing scouting reports. For a guy who can hit 97 MPH and flashes an above average breaking ball, his numbers are not what you'd expect.

Now, how big of a deal is that?

College statistics are somewhat predictive if properly interpreted, but even at the Div I level against good competition they have to be taken with grains of salt....players in the 20-22 cohort are still young enough to develop in unexpected ways. especially a relatively raw pitcher like Brackman. His mechanics are fairly clean for such a tall pitcher who lacks experience, but his release point on his breaking ball is a problem and he sometimes doesn't command it well. The fact that he's a fine overall athlete helps, but I still have concerns about his durability.

I'll be honest and say that my intuition about him is somewhat negative, and I'd rate him towards the back end of the first round rather than at the front end. His upside is very, very high...but I think the risk is pretty high, too.

not an easy comparison here but...
Mark McCormick has not worked out for the Cardinals so far, and they drafted him in the supplemental. He might be a warning sign for teams looking at underachievers with plus fastball/breaking stuff.

Arm Slot
Like most of the top pitching prospects in this draft, Brackman has a low 3/4 delivery, almost sidearm.  If you look at the videos, his hand never gets higher than the top of his cap.

Upside:  Possibly less strain on the shoulder.  Possibly more movement on the fastball.  Possibly more lateral break on the slider.

Downside:  Partially negates height advantage.  Possibly less downward break on the slider.  Knuckle curve probably needs to be thrown overhand for maximum effect.

I might take a chance on him late in the first round or supplemental round.  I would not spend a top 1-15 choice on him.

Missed His Second Straight Start
Brackman missed his second straight start this weekend, not due to the arm fatigue thing, but because his girlfriend was killed in a car accident later this past week. He is not even travelling with the team.

This has been an aweful year, both on and off the field, for the kid.

+1
That is a tough situation for anyone.

Once again it puts life into perspective.

comparison to Verlander
How does Brackman compare to Justin Verlander at the same point in their careers?  I remember hearing similar talk about Verlander having less than impressive stats in college and being raw but having great stuff.

verlander
he had a mediocre W-L and ERA but always struck out a ton of guys. his junior year he K'd 151 in only 105 innings.

Brackman reminds me a lot of him. A lot of publicity, but in the end not a great numbers guy with good stuff.

Candidate to stay in school?
Given Brackman's poor finish to this season, in addition to the lackluster performance overall, I think Boras may price him out of this draft.

I actually think it might be a good idea for Brackman to go back to NC State for his senior year to try and have a great year to challenge for a top 5 pick in 08.

Thoughts?
