Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Baltimore MOD #2

Questions for this go-round:

  1. Hitter or pitcher at #5?
  2. If Wieters and Moustakas are both available, which one?
  3. If Moskos and Detwiler are both available, which one?
  4. Any thoughts on the 4th and 5th round picks?
My answers:
  1. Hitter, because there aren't too many in the organization.
  2. Moustakas, because I think he's the better athlete and has more upside.
  3. Moskos has faced better competition and has more polished pitches; Detwiler has better raw stuff. I usually prefer the guy with the better stuff.
  4. It's hard to guess who might be around, but let me throw some names into the pot:
Dan Duffy, LHP, Lompoc, CA
Sean Koecheler, RHP, Palm Beach Gardens, FL
Bo Greenwell (Mike's son), OF/1B, Alva, FL
DJ LeMahieu, SS, Birmingham, MI
Cody Scarpetta, RHP, Rockford, IL
Michael Southern, RHP, West Hills JC (CA)
David Mailman, 1B/OF, Charlotte, NC
Chad Bettis, RHP, Lubbock, TX

I personally don't like to take college players after the first three rounds, because there's usually a reason why they're still available at that point; I'd rather take a flyer on a HS talent who might still develop. However, I'll listen to any arguments on behalf of anyone who might be around at #130 and #160.

my thoughts
1.) Hitter, same reason as yours.

2.) Wieters - Moustakas may have a little higher ceiling. But catcher is the thinnest position in the majors, nevermind the org.

3.) Detwiler. I've liked what I've read. Plus, I wanna say the Clemson pitcher track record isn't the greatest. Lots of arm injuries with their marquee products.

4.) I don't have a feel for that deep in the draft.

Poor Orioles
  1. I would rather have the best athlete available, but all things being equal, I would rather have the impact hitter.
  2. Wieters without a doubt. He is closer to the majors at a premium position, and more of a sure thing. I don't think the Orioles have enough picks to take Moustakas.
  3. Detwiler - I like his size and the fact he looks like he is getting better. Moskos is one of those maximum effort guys from what I read - and that always scares me.
  4. Sticking to HS for the 4th and 5th rounds seems reasonable to me - but it is a crapshoot as to who will be available.

meh
I say if Wieters or Vitters is there, you take a hitter.  If they're not, you have to look at best available, which is going to be a pitcher.

top5
since Os pick 5th...

Price
Wieters
Porcello
Vitters
Detwiler

Moustakas is pretty high as well and if you plan on converting him to catcher, you are gunna have to worry about catcher stagnation syndrome.
