Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Baltimore MOD

Greetings!

We (the Orioles) have the fifth pick in the first round of the draft. I think we're pretty deep in pitching prospects, but we need some impact hitters here. The best hitter in this draft, Vitters, will be gone before we pick, I'm sure. So, where do we go? Do we settle for a bat with lesser potential that might be an overdraft at #5? Or do we go with a pitcher?

I've identified seven guys who will likely be there when we pick. I'm leaning toward one of the California HS hitters - Dominguez or Moustakas, and no, the fact that Angelos is Greek has nothing to do with the latter - but what do you guys think?

that way, you'll be guaranteed to get one of vitters, wieters, or porcello.

Is this a joke?
You can't trade picks in the MLB draft.

ummm
you can't trade draft picks.

And I dont think you could cash in Majewski for the chance to get Vitters or Wieters.

By the way, I should add that I'm really glad Mike E is doing one of the teams, should be interesting to see how his draft looks

Thanks
Unfortunately, I've only got three picks! After #5, we don't pick again until the fourth round. No supplementals, and we lose our #2 and #3 picks to the Braves (Baez) and Mets (Bradford). Not sure those signings were worth it.

Matt Wieters.  He very well could be available.

Agree
with no 2nd or 3rd round pick, they can afford to go for broke on a good Boras client (sorry Andrew Brackman) at #5 overall.

Wieters
My guess is that the top four picks here are going to be Price, Porcello, Vitters, and Wieters, in some combination. If Wieters gets to #5, he'll be in the mix.

Orioles will take a college pitcher
They should take a hitter, because they sorely need one, but most likely they want a college pitcher who will advance quickly.

I know that's what they want
but is that what they should take?

Hitter
IMO, they should try for a hitter if a good one is available.  With the (bad) luck they've had w taking pitchers on the 1st round in the last decade or so, you'd think they would have learned something by now.  But, we're talking about an organization (read OWNER) that doesnt learn very fast, if at all.

The management would probably tell you that they favor pitchers in the first round because 'Pitching and defense is the Oriole way'.  Well, maybe, but that doesnt mean you have to take a pitcher on the FIRST round EVERY year.  But that's what they do, w rare exceptions.  If I were drafting, I'd try to get hitter on the 1st round as a rule, w occasional exceptions if there's a stud pitcher too good to pass up.  I'd try for some good pitchers in some of the later rounds, like 3-5.  I think if you look at the #1-#3 starters in MLB, you'll find that a lot of them were drafted in the later rounds.

BTW, in case you couldnt tell, I'm an O's fan.

O's 1st round pitchers
  1. Mike Paradis, Richard Stahl, Josh Cenate (supplemental), Scott Rice (supplemental). That was the year the Orioles had seven picks in the 1st and supplemental rounds. Rice is the only one still in the organized minors.
  2. Beau Hale. Still pitching at Bowie, might have a shot as a reliever.
  3. Chris Smith. Gone.
  4. Adam Loewen. Majors
  5. Wade Townsend. Didn't sign.
  6. Garrett Olson (supplemental round). AAA, could be up later this year.
