MOD Yankes

Welcome to the Yankees' Mock Draft Bunker!

The Yanks did not forfeit a first round pick for signing a big name free agent this year, however they also did not receive any compensation picks for departing free agents. It'll be old school 50 picks in the 50 rounds this year, so we'll be picking at #30, #95, #125, #155 and #185 - the last pick of each round.

Chime in and help build the future of the greatest franchise in sports history. We're looking for talent here, no matter where it comes from - high school, major college program, tiny little D-III school, whatever.

I'll need an assistant scouting director to help boil down tough decisions, fill in on draft day in case of some unexpected circumstance, stuff like that.

Exactly 3 weeks to draft, so let's get down to work, and most of all, let's have fun!

One guy I like
Madison Bumgarner...a big powerful lefty, he can learn secondary pitches you cant learn size or velocity

bumgarner
good luck on getting him at 30

I'm a big Bumgarner fan myself...
...but I can't see him getting to the Yanks. He'd have to blow out his elbow or something right before the draft.

we need pitching
nearly all of our pitchers have taken a step forward this year (if they were healthy) and Betances/McAllister havent even pitched yet. I'm up for going for high risk power arms in the middle rounds, but id like a bat for #30.

Todd Frazier
SS - Rutgers

.376/.502/.761 through 51 games with 19 HR, 54 RBI, 15 2B, 50 BB, 21/25 SB/Attempts

saw him play the other day, hit a lead off HR on an inside fastball, then (perhaps unbelievably) attempted to get a base hit on a bunt, despite it being a horrific bunt right back to the pitcher, he almost beat it out...Frazier is an interesting case because he's not facing incredible competition, but not poor competition either and everyone knows who he is, so pitchers definitely try and pitch him carefully, but he's put up very good numbers

didnt see much on the defensive side, good arm, though the consensus is he doesnt have the range to stick at SS in the pro's plus because of his size (6'4'', 220)...i could see CF or RF given his speed, more than 3B

the yankees (and most, if not all organizations) like local products and Jim Callis has said a few times this year he sees Frazier going in the late first, maybe suppl 1st...just a name to consider.

A bat would be nice
but if the best player available is a pitcher (especially a lefty), we should probably take him.

Thoughts on Kyle Russell?
He's obliterating Texas' single season HR mark this year. Do you think he'd be an overdraft at #30?

How about some high-ceiling high school bats
Michael Burgess (OF) and Justin Jackson (SS) were considered possible top-10 picks earlier in the year, but both of them seem to be dropping (Jackson isn't even a first-rounder in most mock drafts).  It could be worth taking a flier on one of these guys.  The BA guys seem to be very high on Jackson, and attribute his drop to overexposure.  Maybe he could be moved to the outfield, since shortstop is probably filled for the next 5 seasons at least.

Mesaraco sounds intriguing...
..anyone care to dig up a little info on the kid? How are his tools, how big is he, etc?

Thanks

Mangini
You think Mangini could fall. I think he would be a solid pick around 30.

First rounders
So far we've got a good list of options for guys at #30. The Yanks have a ton of pitching, so it'd be wise to pop a hitter here. We can dwindle down who we like best in the coming days.

What about the other rounds? I'm bullish about Kellen Kulbacki, and I think he'd be a steal at number #95. Anyone else have any input?

Other guys I'm looking at for the "middle" rounds are Austin Bailey and Kyle O'Campo, 2 HS RHP with live arms that should be available then. Whaddaya think?

If you go here, you can scroll through the pull down menu for info on these guys and a whole bunch more:

Sleepers
Anyone find any? I know BA's top 200 draft prospects list came out (with scouting reports!), so if anyone thumbed through and came up with someone they like, let us know!

Only 14 days until the big event!
