Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Gordon or Delmon Young

Who would you rather build your team around.  Gordon with his great attitude and can't-miss label is who I would rather have especially as a Royals fan too.  Young has already had problems as far as character and his plate discipline is lacking while Gordon is a solid overall player.  Both have 5-tool talent but overall I think you have to pick Gordon because of the fact that he has the great attitude, plate discipline, and plays at third base.

Gordon v Young
I would have to agree with that rational.  Both look to be plus offensive players but Gordon's potential ability to play average to better than average defense at an infield position makes him a little more valuable.  Of course, we're comparing different karats of diamond here.

I like gordon alot but,
I am going with Delmon Young here. To me has has the higher ceiling overall and despite his lack of plate disipline, he can improve and I think he will improve. The guy's bat has a chance Albert Belle or Frank Thomas Like. Does he have an attitude problem?, yeah, but give the guy a break he is still learning the game and in gerneral he's still learning how to be a complete mature adult in this world.

Thomas???
Albert Belle? Frank Thomas?

You point out Delmon's flaw in Plate Discipline and then compare him to a guy who put up 5 seasons of a .399 OBP and a guy who and a guy who has a career  OBP of .424 with 10 seasons of over 100 walks.

I don't see Delmon putting up to many .400+ OBP numbers in his career.  I guess I remember the Albert Belle that had a .426 OBP most, but that comparison is probably a fair one.  Frank Thomas?  Not even close.  Delmon's ability to play defense could put him closer to Thomas as a player, but never as a hitter.  I guarantee Delmon never walks 100 times in a year.

It is amazing how one incident
makes you look bad and people precieve you as a headcase. I mean come on, this is not Pac Man "Got myself a gun" Jones here.

Delmon
Posted better stats at a younger age in a tougher league...I'll take DY

I choose
Delmon Young to build a team around. I think Gordon will be better this year, and maybe next year....but after that I think Delmon will catch and pass him up. both are good choices, but Delmon will be better in 4 years.

Alex Gordon...
guy is everything you want in a hitter/player.

Young to me is a whole lot more "potential" than polish. Gordon mixes both.

Young
I think his body type, his athletic body makes him have more of an upside. He has huge potential to be a top player in the league. He has the cocky star type attitude to bring him to the top.

So similar to Bailey/Hughes debate
Here, Delmon has a higher possible cieling because he combines 35 HR power, .300+ average, and 25 SBs capability, while Gordon will be a .300 hitter with 35-40 HR and 10 SBs but Gordon is much more polished in the same way that Bailey has a higher cieling but Hughes is more polished right now. Gordon will be limited by his park also

I go with...
Gordon.  I think that Young's ceiling might be higher, but his attitude problems and lack of plate discipline would concern me.  Gordon is the safer bet to be a star player while not losing too much projectability to Young.

My heart says Gordo....
...but my head says Young.  Young could be the next Griffey, Jr. if he is able to keep his head on straight.

Another thought on Young
To the guy who said DY never will draw 100 walks.

DY is a very intelligent kid who identifies the holes in his game and works to address them. He's not some knucklehead who just comes to the park and balls. He's thoughtful. The stuff about his "attitude problem" is legit in that Delmon thinks Delmon is the boss. Still, it's not like DY is crazy. Not at all. He's just a brat.

I think Elijah Dukes' reputation somehow leaks into DY's cred. Dukes is crazy.

hahahaha
why does Elijah's name have to appear anytime someone says something negative about Delmon?

I think we'll be hearing about the second bat thrower soon and I'm sure youtube will have Elijah pictured behind the mound or something.

Dukes is Jurastically better than Bradley. After all Dukes has been playing baseball ever since T-ball.

Also
The two players aren't even friends. You are correct in that they shouldn't be linked ... but they are.

Hell, nobody's really "friends" with Dukes.

Gordon is great
But Delmon is better.

I laugh when I read some people saying "Delmon will never draw walks", or "Delmon will only hit 30 HRs a year".  His contact rate and line drive %'s suggest that he can be an elite power hitter in the bigs.  My guess is in a couple years when he starts learning how to get lift on his liners (like Mr. Pujols has the last 3 years), we'll see his HR totals go from 20 to 40 to maybe even 50.  Delmon makes that good of contact.

Plus, I really hesitate giving Gordon "extra credit" for playing 3B.  There are so many superstars these days at the hot corner that it does not see too terribly difficult to find one for your team.
