Chris Burke Crystal Ball

Disclaimer: The Crystal Ball is an "educated opinion"...not to be taken TOO seriously and mostly for fun. I do put quite a bit of work into them, looking at similar players and trying to figure out how the guy in question might develop. Is there a fancy computer program? No. Do I just slop numbers on the page? No. It is less than a projection/prediction but more than just guesswork. The point is to stimulate discussion about the player.

hmm
Joe McEwing type of Career in the matter that he'll play all over the field and have no real position. Get about 300-400 ABs a year. He has a bit more pop and athleticism though.

the peak seems about right....
....but I can't imagine Chris Burke having a major league contract when he's that close to 40.

in general, given the career lengths you predict in most of your crystal balls, it seems like you believe the current trend of rising retirement ages (likely begot by players training better) will continue to increase at a similar rate. i'm a little more pessimistic there's that much room for growth.

question for John....
Is he always a platoon/super utility guy, or do you see him having trouble with injuries?

For 07 Burke
My projections at the Crawfishboxes

285/354/452  24SB 91R 75RBI 54BB 80K 35/2/20 2B/3B/HR

I have his prime(the next 3 years) between Bill Doran's and Andy Van Slyke's prime.

I would change that
I would change some of the HRs to 3B. Like 5 3B and 16-19 HR

I still think his career will be better
I still see him as a Biggio lite, with a few seasons close to 20HR and a few seasons of 25SB or more. But hey we are entitled to our opinions. Thank you ver much for the cystal ball john!

Burke
I dunno.  I like Burke a lot but I think he works best as a super sub.  A career high of 15 homeruns and, say, 20 steals sounds right to me.  I don't know if he ever really hits .300 though unless it's a fluke.

Still, 100 homeruns and 1000+ hits out of a super sub is a career to be proud of.

this super sub thing
does everyone think burke is a super sub just because that's been his role so far?  has he been a super sub so far because that's what he is, or because he had the misfortune of being a second baseman drafted by a team with an entrenched HOF incumbent 2B?  we've never seen him play full-time.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/B/Chris-Burke.shtml

i don't see anything in his minor league stats that suggests he couldn't hit enough to be a full-time 2B.  he put up a .294 EqA his last full year in the minors.

question for john
what position is he playing in which years?

by jpahk on Mar 14, 2007 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

Good thing
The a's injury problems stick around until 2016 when he misses a whole season :(

Play Pence!
15 Homers and 20 Steals looks about right at his peak, which is all the more reason to play Hunter Pence and get superior defense as well.

Pence & Biggio
Hard to forecast Burke because he should be playing 2B but the Astros are loyal to Biggio (not without reason) and want him to get 3000 hits.  Pence might force his way into the lineup and the logical place would be CF, which moves Burke to the bench.
