wow
This is probably the most exploited poll we've had in regards to people making crap votes just because they are a fan of a team.

No way is Texas a top 3 system, and no way are the Yankees top 5.

by Galt on Oct 19, 2007 11:52 AM EDT reply actions

"No way"
You can make a case for the Yankees in the top 5. I personally would rank the DRays, Reds, Indians, Dodgers, and Rockies ahead of them, but it's undeniable that it's a very good system. Much deeper at the lower levels than Texas actually, supposedly the Rangers' strength...

Texas is fairly overrated, they should have come in at #10 or so.

Overrating the Yankees
I suspect the Yankees and Yankees' prospects will always be a little overrated in fans' polls.  We all have a tendency to show bias towards our favorite teams and the Yanks have more fans than other teams by virtue of the NY population and their rich history.

Which goes to show
Exactly how damn good the TB farm system really is.  And the #1 slot was also won in a cakewalk.

I waited to vote for the Yankees...
Until I checked the results and they were ahead. As a Yankee fan, it is difficult to have perspective on your own system, but the barrage of arms definately garners them attention in the top 10 for sure. They are obviously very thin in the hitting ranks, but I'd rather the pitching...

This one wasnt that easy for me
All of the teams have some very good upper level talent, and had Colorado not graduated so many players recently it would be an easy decision.

Boston has Ellsbury, Lowrie, Bucholz, Bowden, and Masterson

Cleveland has Miller, Beau Mills, and Lofgren

Detroit has Miller, Porcello, Gorkys, and Maybin

I think this one has to be either Detroit or Boston. And I like Miller and Porcello better then Bucholz and Bowden so I am going Detroit

colorado for me
i think cleveland is being a tad overrated so far

Any suggestions for the next poll guys?
I believe the Angels have been mentioned.  Any other teams you would like to see on the next poll?
Slowey is a control freak, and I like it!!

how about ...
skimming the surface in no part. order:

for sure Angels - Wood, Adenhart, Conger, Rodriguez?, Arredondo, Evans

Twins - Parmalee, Swarzak, Morlan, Sosa, Revere (no one is laughing now ...)

Orioles - Rowell, Olson?, Hoey, Beato, Erbe, Liz, Reimold, Weiters

Padres - Antonelli, Hunter, Headley, Carrillo, Huffman, Nick Schmidt?

Rockies - Morales, Fowler, Reynolds, Koshansky, Nelson, Weathers

Mariners - Jones, Balentien, Triunfel, Clement, Tuiasosopo, Aumont

I'd rather have any of these groups than NYY, but I can see Tex. in this already (just not 3rd) ...

by dew on Oct 19, 2007 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Mariners
Out of that list, I'd take the Mariners.  Jones, Balentien and Clement are all close to the majors.  Truinfel looks good but has a ways to go.  They also have Tony Butler and Chris Tillman.

I like the Giants system right now compared to any of the others.

That Baltimore system is a complete joke. Padres are are a lot better, but still in the bottom half. Minnesota system is a pure abyss than hitting.

People really underrated the Yankee system because of wishful thinking. Happened with a couple noticeable cases recently. Face it, overspending on the draft works.

Yankees
It's weird.  The Yankees have been so overrated, that they are now underrated.

I really disagree about having those systems compared to the Yankees.  I would most definitely take the Yankees.

Pitchers:
Joba Chamberlain
Ian Kennedy
Alan Horne
Humberto Sanchez
Jeff Marquez
Dan McCutchen
Tyler Clippard
Dellin Betances
Andrew Brackman
Ryan Pope
Zach McAllister
Jairo Heredia
J. Brent Cox
Mark Melancon

Hitters:
Jesus Montero
Bradley Suttle
Juan Miranda
Austin Jackson
Jose Tabata
Justin Snyder
Brett Gardner
Damon Sublett
Marcos Vechionacci

Sure the hitting is average, but the pitchers more than make up for it.

by hallofamer2000 on Oct 19, 2007 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

dangerous territory ...
relying on pitching prospects over hitters;

I like Austin Jackson alot, I think he's their #1 prospect now, not sure what the numbers would say about it. Come to think about it, he's prob. just as good as anyone in the O's system except maybe Weiters.

by dew on Oct 20, 2007 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Atlanta?
Cody Johnson, Jason Heyward, Jordan Schaefer, Brandon Jones, Tommy Hanson.  Seems like  a pretty potent system still.

by DrBGiantsfan on Oct 19, 2007 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

well ...
I'm not sure what you meant about Minn. above, but most of those O's are better than anyone that NYY have left. I like Sanchez a lot but only if his arm stays attached ...

I tend to look more at who a team has coming up the next 2 yrs opposed to whats there at High A and below. Its a real crapshoot to forecast below AA (I know some big revelation ...). This time last yr, hell yeah the NYY have a top 10 or 5 system But not w/ those 3 pitchers already up.

I dont see any help at all for SF the next 2 seasons, some platoon type role players (Nate S., Frandsen) but thats it. Considering their division, they're in for a rough go until 2011 at earliest.

Yeah the Bravos still have some very interesting talent there, I wish Headcase Campbell would pull it together one of these yrs.

by dew on Oct 19, 2007 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

small typo
I meant the Twins are an abyss for hitting.

You're kidding if you think the Os have all that much. Let's see - Wieters, Spoone, Rowell (OF) and bunch of extremely flawed prospects like Reimold, Erbe, Snyder, Olson, and Liz. They have no depth whatsoever. That system is a wasteland.

Todd Frazier for President

by FrazierFan on Oct 20, 2007 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions

depth vs. top tier
some obviously regard A+ level and below depth just as high as top prospects at AA and above - I don't, not really sure how anyone can. I guess NYY have great depth but thats all I or you or anyone else can really do with players at that level. I guess the O's have lousy depth but again thats all we can really do. Maybe its more fun and its certainly more difficult to predict A talent than AA talent, but counting on it and ranking teams ahead of others who have proven AA talent is just plain silly.

On that NYY list someone else posted none of those guys are MLB ready in 2 yrs, maybe even 3 except a few pitchers: With Joba & Kennedy already up, Sanchez has major health issues, and Horne & Clippard are bottom of the rotation starters on their best days. I'm not an O's fan but Weiters, Rowell, Liz are right now better players than anyone NYY has left down. To me thats enough to put them ahead of NYY, but if we want to speculate on depth then 30 people could argue for 30 different systems and could all be right ...

by dew on Oct 20, 2007 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

A+ and Below
So, you wouldn't have counted, say, Clayton Kershaw last year?  Of course you are going to rate an equal ceiling prospect from AAA over one from low A, but to just write off players from A+ and below is just not right.  I know BA sure doesn't do it that way.  Not that BA is the last word, but they are certainly a respected source.  If you want to only count AA and AAA prospects, let's start over and rank the systems based only on AA and AAA.

by DrBGiantsfan on Oct 20, 2007 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

No Kershaw on the Yankees.
Of course there are low-level prospects who are already incredibly polished and have absolute elite ceilings.  The Yankees have none of those.

by abbreviatedman on Oct 20, 2007 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

not what I said
I never said A players don't count, its just they don't (or shouldn't) count as much as a AA or AAA. Their real abilities are often too difficult to qualify at that stage, lots of mitigating factors (ball parks, lousy teams, rushed thru, lack of history, etc.). At least by the time they're in AA for a bit we can start to discern some skills (speed vs. actual base running, real contact rates vs. contact rates off of crappy or glut of inexperienced pitching, K rates, etc.). At AA everybody can play some ...

And yeah players like Kershaw you just know. Theres not that many of them.

by dew on Oct 20, 2007 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Factor
Level of play is certainly a factor to consider, but you sounds like you put a lot more weight on it than I would.

Players like Rick Porcello and Madison Bumgarner are going to raise their team's prospect rankings even if they've never thrown a professional pitch.  Blake Beavan and Michael Main are going to raise Texas' ranking even though they were just drafted out of HS.

by DrBGiantsfan on Oct 20, 2007 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree
my point is let's say SF has ten A prospects, about half solid (grade C) and half above that, a few are grade A. Lets say LAD have 5 AA prospects, 3 are solid and two are better, grade A. If asked to rank them I go with LAD system all the way. Not to say in a yr SF wouldn't catch or surpass them but who knows w/ A level players, just too unpredictable.

BTW I'm a big fan of Mr. Main. I coach youth teams in Orlando, and have played his teams a few times over the yrs. He is a phenomenal talent, I wouldn't doubt he could be a full time pos. player in MLB one day instead of pitching. But he loves to pitch.

by dew on Oct 21, 2007 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Giants
I know you all are used to the idea that the Giants have crappy system, but let's compare what they have right now to what the Angels and Cleveland have right now:

Angels:  Brandon Wood, Nick Adenhart, ??????

Indians:  Adam Miller, Chuck Lofgren, Ryan Mulhern, Wes Hodges, Beau Mills, ??????

Giants:  Villalona, Bumgarner, Alderson, Noonan, Fairley, Schierholtz, Sosa, Bucardo.

I really think the Giants are deeper and have as as much ceiling as either of the first two and possibly some of the teams that have already been ranked.

by DrBGiantsfan on Oct 19, 2007 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

Addendum
Add Hank Conger to the Angels list.  I still like the Giants.
