Randy Johnson Trade Prospects

The book was locked down just before the Diamondback/Yankee Randy Johnson trade. Here are the player comments for the prospects the Yankees got, written before the trade. Sorry they won't appear as "Yankees" in the book.

Whelan, Sanchez

John -

You never posted player comments for Humberto Sanchez and Kevin Whalen (they were traded before you did the Tigers Top 20, but after you did the Yankees).  Would you?  I've been curious about what you'd have to say about them for months.

Seconded
I'm not about to ask you for a revised Top 20, but I would like your opinion on Sanchez and Whelan and where they'd fit in the Top 10 and who might be bumped down/off.

and
Where would you rank these 3 guys on the Yankees Top 20 list?  Do any of them crack the list?

oh yeah
To go along with edd up above, where do Sanchez and Whelan rank in the Yankees' Top 20?  Thanks

Ohlendorf
How can any writeup on Ohlendorf not atleast mention that LHB hit .326 off him? It's not just unlucky BABIP either. It's not like he had different defenders behind him for certain batters and his K/9 vs LHB was absurdly low as well.

Mr Sickels
Gives the trade a C+.

Until...
Until the cash part is taken into consideration, and then the trade rating rises.

Revised Top 20
With the 2 trades, is it possible we see a new top 20? (I'd imagine it would be quick...)

2nd
I'd also like to see a revised Yankees top 20.  As long as it wouldn't be too much trouble.

heh
"Hey John! Now that you've finished making all of those top 20 lists and are finally out of that purgatory called 'writing your book', how about you go back in and make us another top 20!"

I mean, if it's not too much trouble....

Pettitte
can't really be categorized as a soft tosser, unless something drastic has happened to his velocity since he was last a Yankee.

New Top 20
With the number 18, 19, and 20 prospects now gone from the Diamondbacks list who replaces them? I know the book is locked down but a new list here would be interesting for both the D'backs and the Yankees.

Doesn't look to me like the Yanks got much at all.
what did they get ? A decent reliever in Vizcaino and 2 minor league pitchers that might one day be Vizcaino.

Not one of these guys is closer material or will be a good starting pitcher so it's kind of a pile of....ok pitching...

Yes, they did unload a big contract and that can help them if they add Clemens.

They unloaded
more than a contract.  They unloaded a 43 year old pitcher who is coming off back surgery.  You can bet if the Yankees made that same trade in reverse (traded for an ancient pitcher with an ERA of 5 and back surgery) every media outlet in the nation would be calling them idiots.

NY media raves about...everyone
That's why they are the NY media.  Furthermore, dude, right handers at the Major League level need to throw harder than lefties.

Just look at the guys you named as the best soft tossers in the game- Glavine, Zito, Lilly, Jimmy Key, Moyer, Pettitte - ALL LEFTIES. Maddux is quite simply a rare breed who could mix it up when he was younger and although Ohlendorf has multiple pitches he surely doesn't have the wicked knuckle curve that Mussina does.

Quite simply, Ohlendorf is a 6'4" right handed minor league prospect who is almost too old to be a legitimate minor league prospect (25). Who knows, he could be a stud but I just wanted to point out that he's far from a sure thing.

Plus
Maddux sat at 92 in his prime, which people seem to forget for whatever reason.  It's not fireballer level, but it's not slow either.  The odder one is the Glavine comps for soft-tossing lefties, when he could hit 94 with regularity back in the day.
