Question:
What grade would you give overall to the Yankees farm system now?

by yanksfan6129 on Aug 24, 2006 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

C+
C+, you have Tabata and Hughes but not a lot of depth.

Thanks for taking the time to do this John
Is Angel Salome going to be able to stick behind the plate?  If not where is he likely to be moved?

by dixieflatline @ Minor League Ball on Aug 24, 2006 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

salome
good question. I don't know....he doesn't really have an obvious position otherwise....too short for first base, not enough speed for outfield. They will probably keep him at C as long as possible.

by John Sickels on Aug 24, 2006 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Dustin Nippert
He seems to do well at AAA, but so far has really struggled in the big league.  Do you see him still being a decent prospect, or has his star dimmed from his performance this year?

by FunWithHeadlines on Aug 24, 2006 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

nippert
He still has some command issues obviously but he's still a decent prospect. Just needs more time.

Alex Gordon
Now that he's had almost a full year in the minors, what do you think a typical yearly line (BA, HR, RBI) will be during his prime?

by dmitri on Aug 24, 2006 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

gordon
Hmm......

.297, 33 homers, 107 RBI, high OBP, excellent defense, 10-15 steals a year.

Braves Pitching
Its been a rough year in some regards for the Braves system (Lerew, Saltalamacchia come immediately to mind).  We also are a bit short of upper level pitching prospects with the past graduations of Davies and James.  Who do you like better as the Braves top pitching prospect right now, Matt Harrison, Jo Jo Reyes, or someone else?

by abravesfan on Aug 24, 2006 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

braves
They have quickly thinned out in the pitching ranks. I'd rate Harrison ahead of Reyes at this point but no one stands out as a sure-fire thing. They need to get their young arm group recharged.

hopefully evarts and rasmus and some of the 06 draftees can start the restocking

What happened to him? He's just been beyond horrible.

Thanks John

I've heard that his velocity is down a bit and that he's had problems with his mechanics. Could be a Dan Meyer/Mike Hinckley situation here....

Ryan Sweeney
John, how have thoughts changed on Sweeney this year?  The power is coming along, what is his ceiling?  thanks.

by maggsmaggs on Aug 24, 2006 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

progress
I think he's made substantial progress....his power seems to be developing and he is still very young for the level. Ceiling: the good version of Shawn Green.

Is there any hope for...
Gavin Floyd and Scott Baker? I know it's way too early to give up on them, but why have they struggled in their callups and do they have a future in their respective starting rotations?

by dodgerdh on Aug 24, 2006 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

yes
Well, I still like Baker but am less certain of Floyd. I think Baker will emerge as the new Radke within a year or two. Not sure about Floyd...he might need a different organization.

Tabata/Andrus/Martinez
Which one do you think is better right now and who will have the better long-term projection?

by 12to6 on Aug 24, 2006 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

not sure
Well, on the most recent 50/50 list I had Tabata/Martinez/Andrus in that order. I might put Martinez ahead right now since Tabata is hurt. Not sure. All three are terrific.

what the prognosis on the kids: Tabata (NYY), Andrus (Braves), and F Martinez (NYM)? In which order would you rank them and do you have any red flags on them aside from, obviously, that they're young and still have to prove themselves at higher levels?

by scooter on Aug 24, 2006 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

see previous question.

I am very confident in Tabata and Martinez offensively. Andrus might need more time with the bat.

Cubs prospects
What are your thoughts on Mitch Atkins? He's having a great year down in Peoria. He's 20 and currently 12-3 with a 2.36 ERA, 117:49 K:BB and 98 hits allowed in 125.2 innings of works.

Also, have you heard any reports on Mark Pawelek's stuff in Boise of late?

Thanks, love the site!

by Ienpw on Aug 24, 2006 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

number
Well, Atkins has good numbers certainly. I would need to see some scouting reports and talk to some folks before giving him an exact grade...off the top of my head I don't know what he throws.
Likewise I haven't heard anything about Pawelek lately other than that the Cubs were a bit disappointed in him in general.

2006 Rangers Draft Class
What do you think of the two lefties in this draft class, Kasey Kiker and Danny Ray Herrera? Will Kiker crack the top 10 and D-Ray Herrera top 30 by the end of the year? Thanks.

by Longhorn @ Minor League Ball on Aug 24, 2006 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

I assume you mean the Ranger prospect lists. I expect Kiker to be in the top 10, yes. Don't know about Herrera at this point. Kiker obviosly has a higher physical ceiling.

Paul Janish
Now that Paul Janish's bat has come around, with his plus plus glove, should he be considered the Reds' shortstop of the future?  Who might be a decent comp for his skillset (great glove, good eye, contact bat)?

I'd want to see Janish in Double-A before getting too excited, but he's certainly made progress this year. SS of the Future? Maybe but again I want some Double-A data. Comp......Walt Weiss with more power?

12to6 is a genius!
lol...since he beat me to my question, let me ask a different one. In a generally strong system, the Dodgers seem to lack middle infield prospects. Do you think Hu or Abreu have a major league future? Is Laroche a 3Bman, or any chance he'll play 2B? And is Denker done as  a prospect after flaming out at High A, or does his (repeat) performance in Low A resuscitate him? Any other names I'm missing in their system at 2B or SS?

by scooter on Aug 24, 2006 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

dodgers
I think LaRoche is athletic enough to handle second base although his range may drop off in the long run . I like Hu.....not sure about ABreu. I'm now doubtful about Denker.

A Fun Question!
John - Often times when you post about a player, you'll put a picture of one of his baseball cards. Do you collect? If so, what do you collect - certain players, certain brands, etc... Also, what is your favorite card?

by ConorGlassey on Aug 24, 2006 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

card
I used to collect but haven't done so in a long time. I use the baseball card photos because they are cool, and I can grab them and use them without having to worry too much about copyright issues.

Fred Lewis
From what I've read, it looks as if he'll be given an opportunity to see if he can play outfield for the Giants in 2007.  What sort of career do you think he might have?  Viable major leaguer in a couple of years, or just a bench guy?

by FunWithHeadlines on Aug 24, 2006 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

bench
I don't think he'll hit enough to be a long-term regular. Looks like a useful bench guy though.

I like both of these guys....both have shown above average command of above average stuff.
I have heard that Red Sox front office types are very high on both of these guys. Both look like solid long-term investments to me, as young pitchers go.

I havent' really studied the GCL yet.

How would you grade Kouzmanoff based on his performance this year, and what would you project him to do in his first full season in the bigs?

by jasunny on Aug 24, 2006 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

bat
He's got a Grade A bat.

Questions about his defense and his age (he's already 25) knock him down to B+. But a fine hitter. Could hit .280+ in the show, maybe .300.

Dustin Pedroia is the man

by Lesterfan on Aug 24, 2006 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

"Raw" upside is a pretty vague term I think. This guy they drafted first this year, OF Jason Place, is impressing a lot of people in rookie ball with his tools.

What do you think of Jair Jurrjens' season and his long term potential?

by falsealarms on Aug 24, 2006 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

His strikeout rate has slipped since he was promoted to Double-A. I'd rate him a Grade C+ prospect. 4th-5th starter or long relief potential.

Melky Cabrera
Hey John--about a year later--what's your reevaluation of Melky Cabrera? I don't think even the most rabid Yankee fan thinks he's going to be a big star, but it looks like he can hit a bit more than you projected. Thanks for all the hard work!

by SirCaptain on Aug 24, 2006 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

melky
Yeah, Melky has really surprised me. I was down on him....I didn't like his numbers that much, and when I saw him in person he looked pretty bad. But there he is in the majors. . .definitely more than I expected. Big star no, but a solid guy who will have a long career I think.

Granted that a couple of months of minor league performance is still a rather small sample size, it's hard not to get excited by what Travis Snider has done so far.  What do you see in his future and how quickly could he move?

by jasunny on Aug 24, 2006 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

How would you handle a player like Will Inman who is tearing up the sally league at a young age but already has had a sore shoulder and missed some time?  He is right at 100 IP this year, should he be given a taste of A+ or AA ball or just shut down for the year?

by dixieflatline @ Minor League Ball on Aug 24, 2006 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

inman
I'd shut him down if I were the Brewers. No sense in risking him given his health history. He has excellent potential but so do a lot of other guys who blow their arms out.

Daric Barton
Are you worried about him after this lost season, and do you think his ceiling is Mark Grace or higher?

by jasunny on Aug 24, 2006 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

Well, I'm a little bit worried but given his youth he has plenty of time to rebound. Mark Grace without the defense seems a possible outcome, maybe a bit more power.

James Loney
I wondering what to think of James Loney.  He has performed well this year, but his value seems very dependent on his batting average.  What are your thoughts?  He has obviously improved, but how high has his star risen this season?

by count sutton on Aug 24, 2006 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

I go back and forth on this guy. The key for him this year has been better health, but you're right, he has to keep the batting average up. Possible comparison: Cecil Cooper.

by ephinz on Aug 24, 2006 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

I think his power will carry forward but that his batting average and OBP will take a hit if they promote him to the majors too soon. He needs a full dose of Triple-A next year. Note that he has more athleticism and is younger than a guy like Dallas McPherson. In the long run I think Wood will be fine, IF they handle him correctly.

I know he isn't a prospect anymore but I wanted to know what you thought about him missing the end of the last two seasons with hand/wrist problems.  Will this be a nagging concern with him considering how often he gets hits by pitches and his wrist-y swing?

by dixieflatline @ Minor League Ball on Aug 24, 2006 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, I am concerned about this. It may sap his offensive development, especially in the power department. Nagging injuries for middle infielders often inhibit their offensive development. However we're still talking Rickie Weeks here...I don't think we've seen the best from him yet.

haigwood's componant ratios have not held up since moving from the eastern league (9.11 k/9ip, 4.5 bb/9ip, .75 hr/9ip) to the texas league (7.62, 7.01, .69).  his "stuff" has always been said to be average, but his performance has been anything but.  even with the drops in his componant ratio's his era has remained solid for the texas league at 3.98. what is the likelihood that he can land in texas' rotation next season, and actually stick there?

Good question but impossible to answer in depth in this format. In general, I think that pitch counts are a very useful tool that MIGHT be overused or overemphasized in some cases. Pitchers need to be treated as individuals.

Yes, I know, TNSTAAPP, but do you ever see him being a starter at the major league level?  He's been fantastic lately for a 17 year old at low A ball (was just promoted to high A).  I know 64/34 K/BB in 81.2 innings at that level isn't great, but he has a 2.20 ERA and has only given up 3 homers, and his last two starts featured him first striking out 11 in 5 innings and then throwing 5 no hit innings.  Thanks in advance!

Hey John
Question that's always bothered me...When a scouting report says "above-average," as in "Cole Hamels has an above-average changeup," does this mean it is above-average when compared to major leaguers, prospects, or just regular minor leaguers?

Blue Jays drafting strategy
Do you see Toronto modifying its draft strategy (i.e. draft more high risk high reward HS prospects)? After this year's draft, their Lalonde (director of scouting) said "We feel our system in the Minor Leagues is reaching a point where we have enough quality young players that have reached the higher levels. We could afford to take a younger player that would take a little longer to develop."

by parrot11 on Aug 24, 2006 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

yes
I can see some modifications, yes. I am against fundamentalism...and that means I'm against teams that say "never draft high schoolers" as much as I'm against teams that say "never draft college guys." I think you have to do both, and the Jays are smart enough to figure this out.

Gerald Laird has been amazing in his limited PT (He catches 2 out of 5 starts at this point) but he's been hitting very well and has been throwing out runners with good regularity and is actually somewhat of a threat on the basepaths (Especially for a catcher).  How much did you like him when he was a prospect, and based on what he's done this year do you think he has a chance to be an above average catcher in the majors?
