Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Doug Drabek on the radio

I just listened to the great Doug Drabek speak about the upcoming draft and the Woodlands High team. He went over how happy the team was and how well they were playing and stuff like that for a while..... Then they got into the Draft.

They are not entirely sure, like everyone else, where Drabek will go. It sounded like they have not even been made garauntees that if he is on the board, such and such team will grab him. He was almost entised into saying he would go top 15, but then he didn't. Then they talked about Drabek's stuff. In his fathers opinion his Drabek has a ML curve and velocity with a change and 2-seamer that need work. Sounds like every Texas highschool pitcher ever right? Also he said he loves to throw a knuckler which I thought was funny.

After that the "makeup" issues came up and specifically the article in Baseball America. Doug never denied anything, but nothing was specificaly spoken about. It was approached saying "was it young men being boys" and that is how they played it. He then said the writer put in a lot of time to dig up some things that were spun or made larger than they appeared.

From all that it is probably very reasonable to believe that most of the makeup issues are there, in a much lower capacity. And how much lower or the significance of them is up in the air. My opinion is whoever drafts him will never have a problem with him and they will probably save a million dollars because of a story that may have made him a darker figure than he really is.

Doug was honest and his voice let me know that he was not fibbing IMO. I think he would not have done the show if he had to lie on behalf of his son in his hometown. Drabek will be a steal in the draft.

Also, anyone know where I can get definate information about player options?

you kinda need to do it yourself.  Figure out when he made his 40man roster debut.

Easiest way is if they guy has been sent to the minors 3 times since he made his ML debut on baseball cube

Doug Drabek
"Doug was honest and his voice let me know that he was not fibbing IMO."

Im sure if there were significant makeup issues, his dad would let us know.  Come on, you cant take what someones parents say on issues like this.  There are  parents of mass murders that still claim their kids were good people.  Can you actually imagine Doug Drabek saying, "Ya, Kyle's a real a-hole and he'll never succeed in the majors, let me tell you, any team that drafts him will really regret it ..."

i'm rooting for the rangers to grab him as well
I'd love to see the Rangers take him simply because he sounds like a high risk high reward kinda guy.  We haven't taken one of those in a while, and could certainly use a little boost in sheer talent in terms of our arms.

I'm rooting for him or Scherzer, simply because Scherzer is a Mizzou boy.

One side note, I heard in a writeup by MJH in the Newberg emails that Scherzer is viewed as a closer in the ML's, why is that exactly?

P.S.  I dunno if anyone has mentioned this, but Scherzer has the craziest eyes ever.  Seriously, he has to make it, because a pitcher with those eyes must make it.  For those who don't know, one is brown and the other is blue, and he has the great crazy eyed look on top of it.  Just frightening.
