Top 20 Yankees PRESEASON Prospects in Review

Top 20 New York Yankees PRE-SEASON Prospects in Review

This is the PRE-SEASON list. That means it was generated BEFORE THE SEASON STARTED and that the grades were PRE-SEASON. Anyone complaining about the grades based on 2006 performance will be smacked up the side of the head with a Hensley Meulens autographed bat.

1) Phil Hughes, RHP, Grade B+
4-3, 3.18 in 10 starts since being promoted to Double-A, 64/20 K/BB in 62 innings, 49 hits allowed. Not much to complain about here: he's doing just fine and remains a top prospect.

2) Jose Tabata, OF, B+
Hitting .315/.376/.452 with 11 steals in 63 games for Class A Charleston in the Sally League. Remember, he is just 17 years old and doing this in full-season ball. An outstanding prospect.

3) J. Brent Cox, RHP, B
3-2, 2.01 for Double-A Trenton with a 32/13 K/BB in 45 innings. I'd like to see a higher strikeout rate but overall he is pitching well and there is little to complain about.

4) Eric Duncan, 3B-1B, B-
Hitting a combined .215/.294/.335 between Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Trenton. He's shown more pop since being demoted to Trenton, hitting three homers, but it sure looks like his skills are stagnating. His status has certainly slipped in my view.

5) Tyler Clippard, RHP, B-
3-9, 5.16 in 14 starts for Trenton, 68/28 K/BB in 75 innings with 63 hits allowed. His component ratios aren't terrible but he has given up 10 homers, as his fly ball tendencies are coming back to haunt him against better hitters.

6) C.J. Henry, SS, B-
Hitting .235/.324/.369 with 10 steals for Class A Charleston. Showing speed but has otherwise been overmatched in his first shot against full-season pitching. Certainly young enough to rebound in time.

7) Eduardo Nunez, SS, B-
Hitting a combined .212/.257/.332 between Charleston and Tampa. Has swiped 11 bases, but lack of power and little patience have inhibited his production.

8) Austin Jackson, OF, C+
Hitting .262/.350/.358 with 24 steals in 70 games for Charleston. Holding his own, stealing bases, drawing walks, not much power yet but doing better that Henry or Nunez.

9) Christian Garcia, RHP, C+
Hasn't pitched this year that I can find; not sure what has happened to him. Anyone know? I seem to have missed it.

10) Matt DeSalvo, RHP, C+
Got hammered in Triple-A, 7.68 ERA in 39 innings, 30/34 K/BB ratio as his command collapsed. Very disappointing! Even his Double-A numbers (7/9 K/BB in 14 innings) are below his previous standards. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was hiding an injury or something like that.

11) Jeff Marquez, RHP, C+
4.13 ERA, 54/21 K/BB in 61 innings for Class A Tampa, 72 hits allowed. Numbers are mediocre and I would not be in a hurry to promote him to Double-A.

12) Sean Henn, LHP, C+
4.84 ERA in five starts for Columbus, 15/8 K/BB in 22 innings, 22 hits allowed. Numbers are undistinguished and sample size is too small to draw conclusions. Health and command are still questions.

13) Darrell Rasner, RHP, C+
4-0, 2.56 ERA in nine starts for Columbus, 42/11 K/BB in 53 innings, 53 hits allowed. Nice numbers. Think the Nationals would like to have him back?

14) Brett Gardner, OF, C+
Hitting .325/.430/.413 with 33 steals in 68 games combined between Tampa and Trenton, 44 walks. Not a lot of power, but speed and patience look excellent, giving him potential as a leadoff guy.

15) Garrett Patterson, LHP, C+
4.68 ERA with 18/18 K/BB in 25 innings for Class A Charleston. Not a very good ratio set, K/BB, K/IP, and H/IP are all quite mediocre leading to a mediocre ERA. Disappointing for a college pitcher who looked like a potential sleeper.

16) Marcos Vechionacci, 3B, C+
Hitting a combined .215/.295/.294 between Tampa And Charleston. No power, disappointing batting average, worse-than-expected on-base skills. Another Yankee hitter not developing as hoped.

17) Lance Pendleton, RHP, C+
      Hasn't pitched this year.

18) Kevin Howard, 2B, C
Hitting .238/.292/.359 for Trenton. Another disappointing hitter, and this is well below the standards he established in Double-A last season in the Reds system.

19) T.J. Beam, RHP, C
1.39 ERA with 47/14 K/BB combined between Trenton and Columbus in 52 innings, 33 hits allowed. Still a definite sleeper who could be an effective middle reliever if given the chance.

20) Colter Bean, RHP, C
As usual, pitching great for Columbus: 2.08 ERA in 39 innings, 51/24 K/BB. His control isn't great....his walk rate is too high....but he's tough to hit. Scouts still don't like him but the numbers still say he deserves a chance.

Comment:
Some of the pitching is OK.....I still love Hughes, Cox is doing well, Rasner, Beam, Bean. . .but what of the hitting? Duncan is really slipping. I do like Gardner though it remains to be seen if he fits into the Yankees plans. Tabata is a stud and looks like he could live up to expectations. The bottom line is that it takes time to rebuild a weak system.

Some notes
They're taking it very slow with Garcia, but he should be back by the end of the month.

Pendleton is out for the year, I think?

Clippard had really bad luck in a few of his initial outings, but now he's had two really good starts in a row and has gone 11 IP without giving up a run, while striking out 12.

If I had to do the list at this point (based on performance only), it'd probably be something like:

Hughes
Tabata
Jackson
Beam
Clippard
Cox

(roughly speaking - there are others that I'd include on the list)

DeSalvo
Also, on DeSalvo, there was some talk of "fixing" his mechanics and that's what has lead to his utter failure this season. They tweaked his motion or some such thing.

Jeff Marquez
Marquez started off terrible and really turned it around in his last few starts before hitting the DL for I don't know what. He had some incredible GB/FB rations.

Garcia
Accodring to this thread, he's been out all year with an oblique injury:

This should look alot different in 3 months.
Henry has struggled with inconsistencies, but Battle, Nunez, Duncan, and Nacci were promoted way too early and have started to bounce back where they belong in A ball (Duncan in AA). Right now when you combine the numbers it looks like a complete mess though

prospect smackdown - bourn vs. gardner
most of your smackdowns include top prospects who have outstanding tools and appear to be destined for stardom.  the smackdown that i would like to see would be a little different from that because neither bourn nor gardner has developed power, and neither prospect started the year in the top 10 of their team's prospect list.

both players have exhibited good plate discipline, and both players have blazing speed (bourn scored from second base on a sacrifice fly to centerfield) to go along with excellent stolen base ratios.  i don't know much about gardner's defense, but bourn's is second to none in both center and right field.

any chance that this could be put into the pipeline for next week?

by overlord on Jun 25, 2006 5:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Gardner
wins this pretty handily.

by abbreviatedman on Jun 25, 2006 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why?
bourn is only 8 months older than gardner and is putting up an obp that is 80 points higher than his ba and is 37 points higher than the league average in AA.  gardner excelled during his first half in A+, but there is a pretty big transition between A+ and AA when it comes to maintaining a high obp.

by overlord on Jun 25, 2006 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because.
I'd rather have a guy hitting 325/.430/.413 with 33 steals in high A (with 20 ABs in AA) than the guy hitting 325/.430/.413 with 33 steals than the guy hitting .274/.347/.356 with 27 steals in AA.  Especially when Guy Number Two is repeating the league and hit almost exactly the same the previous year.  Sure, Gardner might struggle just as much when he gets to AA (20 ABs is not really enough to judge), but I'll take the guy who might struggle (or might continue to excell) over the guy who IS struggling (for the second year in a row).

Scouting reports on them seem to be about the same, though all I've got offhand are BA's roundups of those reports.  I know Gardner grades out as an 80 speed guy, so (theoretically) Bourne couldn't be any faster than that.  Both are supposed to be excellent CFs.

To err is me.
That first sentence is quite poorly edited.  It should read something like this:

"I'd rather have a guy hitting 325/.430/.413 with 33 steals in high A (with 20 ABs in AA) than the guy hitting .274/.347/.356 with 27 steals in AA."

Bad copy-pasting.

Cox
"3-2, 2.01 for Double-A Trenton with a 32/13 K/BB in 45 innings. I'd like to see a higher strikeout rate but overall he is pitching well and there is little to complain about."

Someone with a K rate of about 6/9IP, and without an amazing K/BB ratio is going to have trouble in the big leagues.

Not yet a bust, but that ERA isn't going to hold.

Re:
Low LD%, zero HRs given up, G/F of 75/46 with a ton of soft contact with a great sinker.

by PooNani on Jun 25, 2006 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Low K rate
The Yankees stretch their relievers at the AA level, so that may affect K rates some. Whereas these guys are only going to pitch 1 or so innings in their eventual roles, the Yankees have them go 2+ innings a lot of times.

That's a good point
And if you notice, he currently 32 Ks in 22 Gs. Having more strikeouts than appearances has got to be worth something. Maybe some optimism that the K rate will increase as the IP per G decreases.

Well, didn't the Red Sox already try to do that?  Sent him back to the Yankees before breaking camp, I believe.

Bean
It's curious that they still haven't really given Colter Bean a chance yet, but they have gone with the likes of Aaron Small and Scott Erickson's corpse.

I Know
I really think that Bean should have a shot. I think they finally let him pitch his first outing this year...

I have to be honest
Huge Yankee fan here--but I think Colter Bean is a AAAA guy at best. He was totally unimpressive in his 2 outings this year--lousy fastball and bad control. He just didn't look to me like he was capable of getting major league hitters out. I much prefer TJ Beam.

Colter Bean
I like him, if only for an excuse to scream:

FREE THE BEAN!!!

by limozeen on Jun 26, 2006 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree!
I have been saying that for a year now, Bean could be an effective reliever for the yanks right now.

Tyler Clippard
I thought that he should have been rated higher based on 2005 stats.  JS said tat some scouts didn't llke him.

He is pitching very well now.
1.09 WHIP
9.3 K/9
4.23 ERA (and falling)

I think that full year 2006 stats will bear out that the scouts were wrong.

Melky - oops
He should have been in the top 20 based on his decent performance at Trenton at the age of 20.  Hard to judge his stats as the Yanks super-rushed him. He should have started at A and finished at AA last year.

JS said that he hated his swing or some such thing and that is why he was not on the top 20.

A small "oops" might be in order for writing off a kid playing decently at that level at that age.  .275 at AA - he should have made the list - not like we have 20 Juston Uptons ahead of him.

No one thought that he would do as well in the majors as he has at the age of 21 this year (terrific plate discipline) and I am not saying he should have been on the list based on this year but Melky's 2006 so far surely highlights a poor call.
