Prospect Retro: Corey Patterson

Did you invest in these?

Per reader request, a Prospect Retro for Corey Patterson.

Corey Patterson was drafted in the first round of the 1998 draft, out of high school in Georgia. The third-overall pick, he was considered to be the best high school player available in the draft that year, due to his mixture of power and speed. He signed late and didn't play in '98. I didn't give grades to just-signed players back then, but I gave him a positive review in the '99 book, based on his scouting reports and video. Some scouts compared him to a young Kirby Puckett. I compared him to a "healthy Lance Johnson with more power," thinking of the 1995-1996 version of Johnson. I would probably have given Patterson a Grade B+.

The Cubs sent Patterson to Lansing in the Midwest League in 1999. He hit very well, posting a .320/.358/.592 mark, with 35 doubles, 17 triples, 20 homers, and 33 steals in 475 at-bats. The only negative was his walk rate, just 25 free passes, with 85 strikeouts. The strikeouts weren't terrible, and Patterson seemed to have a knack for making hard contact even when he swung at pitches outside the strike zone. He also drew positive reviews for his defense and for his work ethic. I gave him a Grade A and rated him as the best prospect in baseball heading into 2000.

Assigned to Double-A West Tennessee for 2000, Patterson hit .261/.338/.491, with 26 doubles, 22 homers, 27 steals, 45 walks, and 115 strikeouts in 444 at-bats. His numbers slipped compared to '99, but it was still a fine performance considering his age (20). I gave Patterson another Grade A heading into 2001, but I wrote that "he needs a year of Triple-A" and that the Cubs were "likely to be somewhat disappointed" if they rushed him too soon. I was growing concerned about his strike zone judgment, but I figured that given his youth he had plenty of time to fix it.

Patterson split '01 between Triple-A and the majors and was disappointing at both levels. His problems with plate discipline really stood out. He hit .253 in 153 games for the Cubs in '02, with 30 doubles, 14 homers, and 18 steals, but a horrid 19/142 BB/K ratio. It looked like he made some progress in '03, but he hasn't built on that.

In retrospect, Patterson's problems with strike zone judgment ended up overriding his other tools and skills. He's shown no real skill growth for three years now. It seems likely that part of this was because he was rushed to the majors before he had solved the problem at the lower levels, although his pure athleticism was so good that he could do well in the minors even without good discipline. At age 26, he still has some time to turn things around, but the early returns in Baltimore are hardly positive, and at this point he has to be regarded as a major disappointment.

How about the two guys that were supposed to be the corner-stones of the Cubs OF throughout the 90s? Brian Dayett and Doug Descenzo? I think Dayett was ranked one of the game's top OF prospects from about 1987-88. Neither panned out obviously.

despite last nights heroics
I would put Jacque Jones as an obvious comp to Kpatt. It was puzzling to me that when the cubs were courting Jacque this winter, they were seemingly devaluing corey at the same time. Say what you will about Jim Hendry, he sure likes to buy high and sell low. I'm just glad he isnt my stock broker.

Question and Comment
Question:

Curious how Pie comps to Patterson, as I've heard that the view of them aren't too far apart.

Comments

  1. Hadn't heard Oddibe's name in a while.  I love that name.
  2. For those of you keeping score, Kevin Orie had a wonderful spring with the Astros.  Unfortunately he was assigned to AAA, where he proceeded to retire.

I can only hope
That the cubs have learned their lesson after Patterson. Even though Pie is putting up impressive #s in Iowa, he needs to learn to make adjustments there as opposed to wrigley.

Junior Felix
I see that baseball-reference lists Felix as debuting at 21 and "retiring" at 26... but I seem to recall hearing that he was much older than that, no?

If you throw him off Patterson's list, then honestly the list, in spite of everything that's gone wrong with Corey, still doesn't look that bad -- a bunch of good-glove CFs who had enough power/speed to stick around.

and boom goes the dynamite.

2003-2004
After these two seasons, the future didn't look so bad for Patterson.  I even remember Baseball Prospectus in their 05 book saying Patterson was headed to a few All-Star Games in the near future.  I was very shocked to read that considering BP's tough standards.  What a difference 14 months make.

2003
Look at CPat's first half of 2003, he was awesome until he ruined his knee on first base.  I am afraid you will neer see those numbers again, we will see another .840 OPS out of him ever.

With Sosa and Patterson going to Baltimore, is it too early to offer them Jones?  They love Cubs' castoffs.

The pain of being a Cubs fan
Remember when the future of the Cubs was going to be Patterson, Bobby Hill, Hee Sop Choi, Luis Montanez, Francis Beltran, and Ruben Quevedo? No wonder I drink so much.
Please fire Dusty Baker!

Wait, what's that you say? He's still around?

You mean...
Patterson, Aramis Ramierez, Derrek Lee, Luis Montanez, Nomar Garciaparra and David Weathers?

There is more than one way to recognize benefits from your farm system and I think the cubs have done well in the Hendry era using the farm system to improve the big league club.  Sean Marshall got the win yesterday, Guzman going today and AAA still has some nice pitching talent left.  It's tough to complain.

Pain, part 2
Your point is reasonable. However, taking advantage fire sales isn't necessarily an accurate measuring stick for your minor league system. Ramirez, Lofton, Lee, and company were getting shipped out one way or another. Having said that, the Cubs were first in line and got the players they wanted. That obviously counts for something.
Please fire Dusty Baker!

Jacque Jones
I'm a huge Minnesota fan, obviously.  And I've shared my opinion on Jones for years.  To me, it's always been obvious what he is, and I've never understood why other people don't think he's horrible.  So, let me just say,

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I am curious, though, what are all the excuses the announcers, mgmt, and Jones himself are giving?  Believe me, don't get optimistic based on any of that.  It's hogwash, and Jones is a piece of sh!te ballplayer.  It's been obvious to me, and the most frustrating thing in the world is having people who've seen him nearly as much as I have...arguing with me!
