BOOOOOOF! (Do not read if you're a Giants fan.)

It looks like Boof Bonser is breaking through in a big way this year...
.75 ERA, 24 IP, 12 H, 2 ER, 23 Ks, .83 WHIP in AAA thus far.

As if the Giants/Twins trade wasn't one-sided enough, Boof now appears to be on the verge of being a star. Somewhere, Brian Sabean is crying himself to sleep.

With a name like
Boof Bonser, how could he not be a star. And not just a porn star.

One of..
the worst trades in MLB history...

Hate to say it, but it might very well end up being true.

Nathan is already proven

Liriano may be an ace in the making

and Boof.. even if he DOESN'T turn out to be anything.. its already a lopsided trade seeing what AJ turned into for the Giants..

Can't believe a guy like Sabean made this trade.

Its as bad as Kazmir for V. Zambrano...

re:
I'd have to research it before lending it such a dubious distinction, but it's certainly the worst I can remember in the last few years.  As big a fan of Kazmir as I am, I'd say it's probably worse than the Mets' blunder.

Slocumb
Heathfcliff Slocumb (craptastic reliever) for Jason Varitek (all star catcher) and Derek Lowe (all-star, former stud closer, one-time Cy Young contender and world series stud) has to be worse.  Apparently when the deal went down instead of the Sox getting Lowe OR Varitek they ended up getting BOTH.

Colon
Unless Liriano reaches his potential, Bartolo Colon for Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips is still worse, IMO.

good trade, yippee!

Or one of the Best. Certainly the Best in Twins history.

Essentially, Allstar reliever, Ace in the making, an Average ML Starter, and a spot for Mauer for a guy they really couldn't use anymore.

speaking on twins prospects.
matt garza is unhittable in High A ball so far.

0.49 era or so 3-0 with a insane innings/hits/k ratio.

Looks like twins scouted this kid right, when many felt he shoulda gone later last year.

Twins
have an awesome farm system...  IMHO I think it stacks up there with AZ, LAA, LAD, etc.  Maybe not in terms of impact talent/high ceiling talent.. but in terms of depth.. absolutely.

by cincyinco on Apr 23, 2006 4:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

great pitching depth
but not much in the way of impact hitters.  Of course, pitching depth has a way of thinning itself out, and unfortunately, pitchers aren't what Minnesota really needs right now.

I'm not disagreeing with you about the system, though.  It's top notch.

Hitting depth.
While I agree with you that the Twins hitting depth can't touch their pitching depth, two of the Twins top hitting prospects are tearing up AA. Span is hitting .373 while Moses it hitting .364

Matt Fox
Any word on the status of Matt Fox?  I know Rainville will likely miss most of the season after undergoing surgery but I haven't heard about Fox.

Extended Spring Training
He should be ready to go pretty soon.  I'm not sure if they are going to put him in Beloit or wait for the Rookie leagues to start.

Personally, I think they want to use him as a starter, but all rotation spots are full for now, so he'll have to wait for some promotions to open a spot for him.

Boof

It was a horrific trade. However, Sabean appears to be enamored of veterans and is quick to trade rookies for them. The Giant's farm system has a fairly bare cupboard thanks to him. I am just very grateful that he is not the GM for my favorite team.

horrible trade
Just think what the Giants rotation might have looked like in a year or two if they hadn't made that trade:

Cain, Liriano, Lowry, possibly Schmidt.

That rotation would've been absolutely filthy, it certainly wouldn't have helped there Methusaleh-esque offense, but at least there would have been a reason to go to their games.  Now they're looking like they're going to be one of the worst teams in the worst division in baseball for quite a while.

With that potential rotation, the offense...
may have been enough.

Hello everyone,

neutralluke - If the Giants had those four pitchers, even a weak offense may have been enough to win the NL West and make a great playoff push.

Just my 2 cents. :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Bad Trade
Pierzynski makes this a bad trade. The fact the Twins might get lucky and have all three of the unproven players they got in return reach their potential is just that, luck. Not to discount the work of the Twins scouts in identifying the guys they wanted, but I think even Terry Ryan admits he didn't think Liriano  was gonig to be as good as people think he is going to be now.

And that is something to keep in mind. At this point the trade is really Nathan for Pierzynski. Liriano looks like he will contribute and Bonser might. Until they do, its not even in the competition for worst trade ever.
