Lerew
John,

Could you explain your relatively low ranking of Anthony Lerew (B-), especially compared to pitchers that have equal or worse stuff than him and worse production like Merkin Valdez (B+) or Justin Orenduff (B).  Thanks.

by mckeeno on Feb 25, 2006 12:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

lerew
I was in a bad mood the day I wrote up the Braves?

To be serious, Valdez has a better fastball than Lerew and I think a higher physical ceiling.

You have a better case about Orenduff, who could be overrated in the book. On the other hand, Orenduff has a substantially higher K/IP ratio even though he doesn't throw quite as hard as Lerew much of the time. I can see shuffling their grades.

Organizational home parks
Do you think it hurts or helps the development of prospects (or is neutral) if they're playing in all hitters' parks or all pitchers' parks on their way up the ladder (i.e. like how the Rockies and Angels have all hitters parks in their minor league systems, or how the Cubs mostly have pitchers parks)?

by Brickhaus on Feb 25, 2006 12:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

parks
I think extreme parks can have a negative effect. . .I wouldn't want to stick my pitchers in High Desert for example.

Ledezma
He had a great year a couple years ago and has good enuogh stuff to a successful starter in the majors, but does he have any hope after his disappointing and injury-filled 2005 season? Will he get another chance as a starter?

I don't know. It depends entirely on health and I haven't heard anything recent about how he is doing.

Rangers
Hi John, do you see any of the DVD trio making the big league club out of spring training?

Diamond is in a group of five pitchers listed by the Rangers as fifth starter candidates but I think that is just noise.  The other two are not on the list.

Does Andy Marte have an injury concern, or was that all baloney?  Has anything that's gone on this offseason changed your evaluation of his future?

I still think he's great.

The injury stuff is just unsubstantiated rumor as far as I know. The most recent thing I heard was that his agent had forcefully denied that there was any truth to the rumors at all.

Stat analysis
It seems the prospect analysis using statistics is really starting to become more competitive and many of the different authors/websites are offering similar views of the world.

Is there any chance in the future you could include more analysis regarding performance splits on prospects. Home/Road and Lefty/Righty in particular?

by the time the sample sizes become large enough to be meaningful, the minor league season is nearly over.

I've heard
Minorleagueball.com has it and sells a portal to access it to the minor league clubs.

It's getting to the point that anyone can look at thebaseballcube.com and get the basic stats. If you could incorporate splits into your analysis it would set you apart.

In 2001, I got a password to Howe Sportsdata's online database. It has lefty/righty, month-to-month ... amazing stuff.

My password eventually expired and now I've got nothing.

It was so much fun going through there. That's basically heaven to people like us, and I'm thankful that I got to enjoy it as long as I did...

data
I do think John would be served well by getting this sort of data and incorporating it into work to give him an edge over the competition . But I also recognize it won't be free. So I wasn't suggesting this for the free content on the website. More as a tool to make the newsletter and book more meaningful. The bar on prospect analysis is getting higher (alot of that is due to John too) and just commenting on a players overall batting line might not be enough in the future. Just like any business, you gotta anticipate what's next. Grow or perish.

What kind of future do you see for Mike Jacobs?  Can he hit (and defend) enough to play first every day?

by sasquatch83 on Feb 25, 2006 12:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

jacobs
He should provide enough power to play every day, but I'm not sure what his batting average and OBP are going to look like. I don't see him as a .300+ hitter over a full season, even in a platoon role.

Andrew Miller and Ian Kennedy
What do you think of these two college pitchers? I'd think both are B+ talents right now, but I know to truly tell we'll have to see them in action after they are drafted. If Andrew Miller goes #1 to KC how long do you see it taking him to get to the majors... 3 years?

Tyler Clippard
How did he go from a B+ in late September (http://www.minorleagueball.com/story/2005/9/21/1402/01147) to a B- in the book? Was it something he did or was it just your opinion on him changing? If so, why?

by Stephcaflowne on Feb 25, 2006 12:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

B-
Once I saw the data indicating that he is an extreme fly ball pitcher, my opinion changed a bit.

I still like him and perhaps a straight Grade B would be better than B-.

by John Sickels on Feb 25, 2006 12:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Extreme FB
Clippard is not an extreme FB pitcher. He is about average. The average ML allows about 1.2 GB for every FB. Clippard's GB to FB ratio last year was 1.19. I personally went over the numbers and defined GBs as any non line drive or pop up or fly ball and divided just by fly balls.

Yes, he can keep his minor league BA over .350, or at least .340. I think he'll tear up the PCL.

Yes, he is an outstanding contact hitter.

McCutchen and Carlos Gonzales
Which of these two is the better prospect for 4x4? I'm leaning to McCutchen for his speed/power combination, but Gonzales seems to have upside potential for superstardom.

by lambtwo on Feb 25, 2006 12:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

good question
That's a toughie! Both of these guys could be excellent.

We have more data from Gonzales because he's played a full season, but I really like McCutchen as well. Making direct comparisons is difficult because of the different data samples, but I think Gonzales might have slightly more power potential.

Pedroia
What do you make of the complete mulligan certain fans are trying to give Pedroia for his wrist woes? Googling I seemed to find that x-rays were negative and the wrist was just sore. Undoubtably he has accomplished alot quickly and hitting for pop with a sore wrist is not easy.

But I still believe the fact that the sore wrist sapped him that much shows that he has a slim margin for error. I don't believe he will hit 20 homers more than once (if at all). What's your take?

I don't see him as a 20+ homer hitter, with or without wrist problems. I see him more as a 10-15 homer guy, though with a high OBP.

Pelfry, Billingsley, Carillo
Are these 3 comparable or are any clearly above or below the rest?

by lambtwo on Feb 25, 2006 12:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

comps
Hm. Again, a tough comparison given the very different sample sizes and backgrounds of these three guys.

Pelfrey probably has the best physical projection of the group, but also has the least objective data to go on. All three of them are elite prospects, no question. I rate Billingsley higher on my list because there is more data, but that could flip once Pelfrey pitches.

Mets Prospects
I've always hesitated to draft Met prospects for fear of them being tarded to the A.L. and losing their rights. Would you agree that the Mets are the most likely NL team to trade their top prospects over the next few years and do you think trading Pelfey is a real possibility?

by lambtwo on Feb 25, 2006 12:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

likely
Well, I don't know about "most likely" but it does seem to be a pattern.

My guess however is that they do NOT trade Pelfrey.

who arrives and just rakes
I have your book and know how you rated them in your top 50, but in terms of liklihood of making a smooth transistion to the majors and  immediately playing at a star/all star level upon their arrival in the majors (ie. a Pujols path not an up and down for a year or two Arod path) how would you rank between Wood, Kendrick, Gordon, Marte

by BERSMR on Feb 25, 2006 12:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

path
Well, I don't think ANYONE can be EXPECTED to pull a Pujols. But in terms of "not struggling" too badly, I'd make it

Gordon, Kendrick, Marte, Wood.

I expect all of them will be excellent players in the long run.

Pelfrey
Is he falling victim to the overhyping of the New York media?

With Minaya at the helm, should Mets fans fear that Pelfrey will be traded for a new "hot-to-trot" hispanic player?

Pelfrey is an excellent pitching prospect, NY media or no.

I doubt Pelfrey will be traded, especially if he gets off to a good start.

Chris Nelson
Tulowitzki seems to have totally stolen his thunder with serious talk now of Barmes moving to 2B soon. Do you know what league Nelson is ticketed to start at this year and has there been any talk of moving him to 2B or somehere else?

by lambtwo on Feb 25, 2006 12:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

nelson
Nelson's assignment will probably depend on what he does in spring training. Either level of A-ball, probably high A is my guess.

There has been talk of either 2B or OF in Nelson's future, but I don't think it has happened yet. No reason to rush the decision now. If he can stay at SS it enhances possible trade value.

Park Adjusted Brandon Wood
BP in their explanation of their top 50 provided this:

Wood's PECOTA card reflects this sentiment, as his raw numbers of .321/.383/.672 translate to a more reasonable and conservative .257/.309/.506. A 815 OPS is still solid for a SS.

A 1.055 OPS becomes a .815 OPS? Wood's home park wasn't even High Desert or Lancaster. I don't buy that.

Don't you believe that Wood has more than just a "solid year for a SS" and that this translation goes overboard? IMO, he coulda slugged >= .550 in any run environment vs A-ball pitchers this year.

wood
Without breaking down the numbers myself I don't know if the PECOTA translation is excessive or not.

I do know that I am still not convinced by the accuracy of MLE translations at the A-ball level or lower. . .I take them with many dashes of sodium cloride. Double-A and Triple-A translations I put much more stock in. But the leap between Class A and Double-A, let alone Class A and the majors, is so great that I have a lot of doubts about whether those translations are accurate or not.

In Wood's case, getting to see him in Double-A is one of my main goals for early in the coming season.

by John Sickels on Feb 25, 2006 1:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

translation
that 815 OPS is his translated major league performance for 2005. it is indeed "solid" for a shortstop but for a guy who's 21 it's a sign of possible stardom.

by jpahk on Feb 25, 2006 3:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What are those numbers translated to?
Is that .815 OPS what they're saying he would have done in a neutral park, or is that what he would have hit in the MLB?

by peabody56 on Feb 25, 2006 4:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Translations
Those are translated to what he would have hit in a neutral park in MLB. A relatively hitters friendly MLB it seems, where league average is .340/.440, which I'm pretty sure is a good bit higher than actual MLB average.

But yeah, an 815 OPS is pretty amazing for Wood at that level.

by Flynn Blake on Feb 25, 2006 12:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think Choi will end up having one or two really outstanding seasons as a platoon player, but that he will age poorly and never live up to the potential he showed in the minors.

Whether things could have been different if he'd been given consistent playing time in Chicago, I don't know.

Ishikawa has some holes in his swing (similar perhaps to Hee Choi) and will need to make adjustments against breaking balls and inside fastballs in Double-A.

Sandoval is harder to say since he is much lower on the farm ladder. I don't think he'll have as much power but he should do better in the BA and OBP departments.

Both should make the majors, but neither is a guaranteed regular just yet.

College K/BB
In your book, I believe you mention that you think there might be a correlation between a college player's K/BB and his minor league K/BB, at least more than other metrics.  If I'm misquoting, please correct me.

Is this just because you think K/BB is the most repeatable skill (rather than hitting for average or hitting for power)?

scouting question
i've always wondered how seeing a player play a couple games can tell scouts much about his ability. He could be on a hot streak or been in a slump at the time. What are the kinds of things that scouts are looking at that they couldn't get from watching tapes of that prospect.

I've always wondered about the benefit of scouting over such a short period of time when i hear that a GM is scouting a player for a couple of games. I'm thinking that they should already have a good idea of the type of player they are trading for.

by parrot11 on Feb 25, 2006 12:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

scouting
This is a good point, and any good scout will understand this and adjust for it. Part of this is why scouts focus on things like tools, physicality, athleticism, work ethic, etc. You can see those things even if the guy goes 0-for-5.

Patrick "Neil" Sellers
This guy was taken by the Astros beyond the 30th round as a 3B, which likely means he has little or no chance of reaching the bigs.  He's been old for his league (SS and R despite being drafted from college), but has really put up some nice numbers including periphs.  Have you seen him play?  What's your take on him?

Short Season and Rookie League changes
How will the proposed changes to the lower leagues which will give each team just 1 short season team affect prospect development?

by William K on Feb 25, 2006 1:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

leagues
Too early to say for sure, of course. Anything that reduces the exposure of baseball is bad in my book. I can see cutting or reducing the complex leagues, but the proposals on the table would screw over the Appy League and I think that is a bad idea.

Any thoughts on former URI LHP Zach Zuercher, 2005 9th round pick for the St. Louis Cardinals?
Does he have Major league starter potential?

typical college lefty with average stuff, has to have good command to survive. Did OK in short-season ball but not spectacular. Probably more of an organization guy at this point but as a lefty with a pulse he bears watching.

GCL Pitchers
The Yankees had some live arms in the GCL in Francisco Castillo (1.76 ERA, 34/14 SO/BB), Rolando Japa (3.50 ERA, 41/19 K/BB), and Domingo Cabrera (2.30 ERA, 37/9 K/BB). They're not mentioned in any publications. Is it that they are too far away to rank yet? Or is there just too many pitchers that dominate in GCL?

by Stephcaflowne on Feb 25, 2006 1:10 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

GCL
TOo far away. All of them as you point out have decent or better early numbers, but we need to see more at higher levels. lots of guys have good rookie ball numbers then disappear.

by escroll on Feb 25, 2006 1:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

best case: .300, 25-35 homers, high OBP.

medium case: .280ish, 20-25 homers, mediocre OBP.

I think he can catch if they let him, but that would also increase the risk of injury and/or offensive stagnation. Otherwise he will probably end up at 1B if they worry about his glove and want to get his bat into the lineup asap.

I think Anderson is a decent prospect, but possibly overrated offensively. I woudl rather have kept Chris Young who has higher upside with bat.

I see Anderson as a .260-.280 hitter with OK power but not a spectacular guy.

Re: Craig Hansen
Hi John. Is Boston going to make Craig Hansen a starter? I guess he's come up with a major league change up and now has 3 quality pitches. What's your thought? (I heard Pappelbon will be the closer)

Yes, this is starting to be talked about, Hansen as starter and Papelbon as closer. I don't see any reason why it can't work. Papelbon can pitch in any role, and if Hansen's changeup is as good as reports say. . .

Hi, John...I think its great that you open the portal for wide ranging questions like these.  I've learned a lot.

Thanks.

Anderson I've talked about. He's OK but not great.

Chris Shelton is a very, very good hitter. What he's done is repeatable. How long he lasts as a regular will depend on health and defense.

McCarthy is very good...project what he did last year out to a full season for '06 then gradual improvement in '07 and '08 is what I expect if he stays healthy.

astros
Because I hate the Astros and were trying to screw their prospects over.

Seriously, in Zobrist's case it is becaause he has no Double-A experience despite his age. Buchholz can't stay healthy and his velocity was way down last summer.

I should probably have put McLemore in the book given his AA numbers although is he healthy?

by John Sickels on Feb 25, 2006 3:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Stros
I was not trying to take a shot at you for "hate of Astros".

I didn't know if you realized you dropped Zobrist's grade from last year. McLemore is healthy and as you may have heard me say before his injury repeots were false.  http://www.astroasylum.com/Mark-McLemore-At-Spring-Training is a picture of him pitching yesterday. He also did well at the Ryan camp two weeks ago.

Buchholz has gained some velocity back and has as good a shot to make the team as Nieve or Hirsh at the moment. http://houston.astros.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060224&content_id=1322246&vk ey=spt2006news&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou  If the Astros are talking about him so much I guess he is on their radar.

Burke and Scott
I don't think of them as first year players even though one is ROY eligable. One was rated high and the other not so much. If you had to bet your life on one having the better career, who would it be? Also what do you think of them, as well as Buchholz, McLemore, and Zobrist?

NCAA hitters
How do you feel about an NCAA hitting prospects that strikeout at high rates like a Drew Stubbs? He struck out nearly 70 times last year.

Elite college hitters like Nevin, Kotsay, Burrell, Berkman, Gordon, etc... seemed to make contact at rate atleast twice as good (i.e. <=35 Ks).

Even for a player that faces premium college competition @ Texas like Stubbs I would think that contact rate is troublesome. Contact is only going to get harder as a pro. Thoughts?

agree!
I agree, this is a problem for Stubbs and similar players and creates doubt about how their BA and OBP Will hold up against pro pitching.

Stubbs is VERY toolsy but also somewhat raw for a guy from the Texas program. I can see him as a star and I can see him as another Shea Morenz.

B.J. Upton
Hey John - First off, I love the site and read it everyday. Thanks for taking time to do cool things like this.

Anyway, I just heard you on XM with Holden Kushner talking about B.J. Upton and I was wondering - if you were in charge of the Devil Rays, what would you do with B.J.? Do you keep him at SS and hope that his defense improves? Do you ask him to switch positions - if so, where?

Because, like you said, his bat has been ready for a few years now, and it's a shame that it's going to waste down in the minors.

by roboz on Feb 25, 2006 1:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ceiling: number one starter, combination of power and precision is very notable, similar to Prior or perhaps Roger Clemens when his command is on.

CAVEAT: Hughes has significant injury risk and is far from a sure thing. IF HEALTHY, should be ready by '08.

Reid Brignac
Do you think it's fair to say Reid Brignac is the next Brandon Wood?

But in some seriousness, what do you see Brignac (possibly) doing and what is the differnce between the end-of-the-season 2004 Brandon Wood and the end-of-the-season 2005 Reid Brignac? I know Wood kind of faded at the end of the 2004 season.

by ultxmxpx on Feb 25, 2006 1:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

brignac
There are some similarities...athletic shortstop, good glove but may end up at third base eventually, raw power but problems wiht the strike zone in low A-ball. A lot of similarities, actually.

A wood-like breakthrough is POSSIBLE but I wouldnt' exactly bet on it. Slow improvement is more likely.

My late questions
First one, prediction for Trevor Plouffe's 2006?

Also, what would you do with Matt Bush? The bat doesn't really seem to be there right now, but physical maturity may help him develop the ability to hit with some authority. A switch to pitcher might help, but he's pretty small and I'd question whether he'd have a real chance long-term there.

by mrkupe on Feb 25, 2006 2:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

plouffe
Fort Myers is a tough place for an offensive breakthrough. My guess is that Plouffe will do somewhat better this year, but then take a major step forward in 2007.

Bush...you leave him at SS for now. He still has a chance given his age. . .don't move him to the mound until you are certain he won't hit.

by John Sickels on Feb 25, 2006 3:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bush
I'm pretty certain his chances of hitting are slim.  I think his chances of becoming a worthwhile pitcher are slim, but quite possibly better than him hitting.

Maybe
They should just stick Matt Bush and Josh Himlton in a cage and let them duke it out 'Celebrity Deathmatch' style.  Maybe that way the two teams will be able to recoup a bit on their #1 picks...

Seriously though, I wouldn't stick a fork in Bush just yet.
