ahem
Adam Loewen wasn't good enough; Brian McCann was just a bit too good; but Andre Ethier is JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST right

Optimistic
I think that's way optimistic.  Ethier couldn't beg, borrow or steal a hit down the stretch.  He got replaced by Marlon Anderson for crying out loud.  It isn't even clear that he's in the Dodgers plans for next season.

marlon anderson
Ethier was replaced by a guy who hit .375/.431/.812 for a month, I don't think that says anything about Ethiers future, unless of course you think Anderson has suddenly found the ability to hit like Barry Bonds.

With Drew gone, Ethier is the only everyday OF with much major league experience in the organization ... Oh, he's hella in their plans.

Ken Griffey Sr comp?
Pretty valuable complementary piece to a good offensive team;  his lack of HR's would keep his salary from going crazy in arbitration.

Ken Griffey Sr with less stolen bases, more HR power, and less triples...

Is that why you don't having him going to the Yankees when he becomes a free agent?

Consistent
Mediocrity.  I don't see him being a full-time OF producing fewer than 20 HRs a year

You're kidding, right?
The career line above is .300/.370/.450. Sure, a bit low on the power, but you're saying a guy with a career OPS of .820 isn't going to get regular time? Riiiiiight. Add in the fact that he plays good defense, and you're looking at a very solid ML player.

really optimistic
love to hear the reasoning here, just don't seem him getting that many ABs, in any case.

That avg
seems a bit too high for me

The D-Backs
Why does he go to the D-Backs?  With the outfield depth they have with Young, Quentin, Gonzalez, and Justin Upton...why would they need Ethier in 2007?

by ajohnst1 on Nov 19, 2006 4:56 PM EST reply actions

D-Backs
Ethier starred at Arizona State University and his family is in the area.  I would think that is why John suggested Arizona as a location.

Re The DBacks
well it actually makes sense, Quentin will probably be leaving for FA that year and he could be too pricy especially with the D-Backs saving up/ already  paying for Young, Drew, Jackson, Tracy etc.

.850 OPS
I think Ethier will be a solid .850 OPS for his entire career.

However, I think he has a greater chance of becoming a career. 950 OPS than he does of becoming a career .750 OPS player.

by PatrickTheDodgersFan on Nov 19, 2006 6:39 PM EST reply actions

re: .950?
I would say the opposite, simply because there are a TON more guys with a career .750 OPS than .950 OPS. ;-)

i don't think he'll go either way
but I don't see Ethier as a guy who drops off significantly.

by PatrickTheDodgersFan on Nov 19, 2006 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

Drop Off?
He sure dropped off at the end of last year.  Dropped clear out of the lineup!

What PatrickTheDodgersFan said
Playing the hot hand.  If Ethier doesn't get much meaningful time or stinks up the entirety of Chavez Ravine this season, then he dropped off.  But not because of one month where one guy was ballin' out of control.

agreed
I'm not very high on Ethier at all. He swings a dainty stick much like Dustin Pedroia but not quite as bad. Sorry, 15 - 20 taters ain't cutting it as a corner outfielder. Not if you're a team expecting to win anyway.

Also, they have only 1 homerun to look forward to out of one outfield position already. At this point they have no power.

P.S. Russell Martin is one supercalafragalistic cat!

Dutin Pedroia .... a poor man's Ronny Cedeno - Theo Epstein

Did you see Marlon Anderson's line in September?
Marlon Anderson was on fire, and Little played the hot hand. I wouldn't have done it, but you can't fault it.

Maybe if your Giants were a tad more astute they would have won more than 76 games.

Andre Ethier = Garret Anderson?
I'm guessing this won't format well, but....
