I need OBP info from a stat guru's about Barry Bonds
OK, I know this is a minor league site. But there are some pretty intelligent people on here so I figured this would be the place to get some info. Here is my question:
Barry Bonds would have led the NL in OBP (.454) had he been a "qualified leader." But he did not have enough plate appearances to qualify and Albert Pujols took the crown with a .431 OBP.
From what I understand, to be a qualified leader a player must have 3.1 plate appearances for each game his team plays. The Giants played 161 games; because of their rainout with St. Louis they lost a game. So Bonds would have needed 499.1 plate appearance which would have either been 499 or 500 depending whether MLB rounds up or down. Bonds had 482 at bats plus base on balls.
Here is where it gets sticky. I think Bonds had enough SF and HBP to add another 11 at bats (unless those are not counted as at bats for OBP purposes). Besides that, I thought there was a rule that said if a player did not have enough plate appearances to qualify as the league leader he would have the remaining number he needed plate appearances added but not given any credit for getting on base. For instance, if Bonds has 493 plate appearances (at bats, walks, HBP, SF) and needs 499 to qualify he would be given credit for the 6 extra plate appearances but it would statistically be given as if he went 0/6 at the plate. If that is the scenario, would Bonds have a high enough OBP to lead the NL?
Anybody have any info on this?

Bonds wins.....
"... A ** by the stat's value indicates the player had fewer than the required number of at bats or plate appearances for the BA, OBP, SLG, or OPS title that year. In order to rank the player, the necessary number of hitless at bats were added to the player's season total..."
Bonds won.
For what it's worth.
