Jed Lowrie

Sam Geaney of CalLeaguers.com answered my inquiry on Jed Lowrie with the following:

Med. frame physically lean and toned. Narrow shoulders and hips suggest he won't carry much more weight in future.Very good athlete. From left side he sets up with his hands slightly below letters and back away from his body. Avg to plus batspd. Tremendous leverage down throw ball allows him generate hard backspin creating gaudy raw power for someone of his size and stature. Most of power is to pull side LH and approach at times was very heavy to that side. I had some questions with his hand setup and his ability to turn around on quality FB's which were furthered by his summer '04 struggles with wood but he obviously answered them during the spring and summer of '05. He makes very good contact which should help his power output and can leave you gasping with the authority that the ball comes off given his size and the ease in which he swings. RH he has a more conventional swing with his hands high but he gets in trouble with some bat wrap that creates length and screws with timing lending itself to more problematic timing than as a lefty. I imagine they will be able to shorten him up a bit.

Avg to slighly above runner, I simply never was really able to get  good times from him as he seldom hit the ball on the ground. Defensively I can see him sticking at SS. I wanted him there all last spring but Stanfords SS was unable to turn the DP from the right side of the bag as bizarre as that may sound that was the reason Lowrie played 2B all spring. 50-55 arm with easy carry. Makes the plays with ease range is adeq. at this time for SS and as mentioned previously I don't really see him slowing down/thickening up.

I saw all the top guys on the West Coast last yr and not to say that I would put him at the top of my list but I really liked him. I saw Pennington briefly and I would take Lowrie in a heartbeat. I buy into the power as being legitimate juice down the road and his emergence as a defender on the left side is very exciting to me and must be frustrating to some clubs who were picking in the late part of the first round in hindsight.
