Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Does anyone have a Kyle Aselton scouting report?

Kyle was drafted by the twins in 2004. He is a left handed pitcher out of Oregon State.

He led MWL in era.   2.49 era 112 innings pitched, 80 hits, 113 k's.  .199 average against.

He started tonight in the playoffs, as the Beloit Ace, pitched 8 innings, gave up 1 hit, 10 k's.

Slowey and Garza will follow him, as he is their ace, thats pretty high praise.

Has anyone seen him pitch and whats his velocity and style like.

Twins love those southpaws.

Only started 10 games
Many of those innings came in relief, so that makes a difference.  According to MiLB.com, he's pitched in 41 games this year, only 10 as a starter.  Anybody happen to know where to get starter/relief splits, or why he hasn't been a full-time starter?

Don't get too excited...
I wouldn't get too attached to Aselton - he's OK, but certainly not a top prospect.

He gets by more on his command and deception than anything else.  He hides the ball extremely well and has a few jerks in his delivery.

He will probably succeed in Fort Myers next season, but I don't see him as a "sure thing" or even a top prospect.

Aselton's stuff is merely average at best.  He doesn't overpower (high-80s fastball that occasionally touches 91-92) and his breaking ball isn't all that good.  Nice changeup, though.

Ceiling:  Middle reliever

well
he was actually better as a starter then a reliever.

He dominated as a starter.

I'm not saying he's a top prospect, he's just another interesting one to watch develop.  I never say a kid at their age cant be this or that...or ceiling.

Cuz we really never know, too many cases in the past have proven people wrong who go out on a limb and say what kids will be.

Radke was a 20+ round draft pick and he's turned out ok.  He never had the dominating pitches either.  Heck another of our pitchers Carlos Silva doesnt have dominating stuff either and he's doing great this year, era in low 3's.

college guy in Low A
that's all he is.  Let him do this in FLA or AA and then you may have something.  Just by the description, I picture an 84-88 MPH fastball, decent curve, and great change-up (for low A hitters).  Nothing to get overly excited about.

actually
i just read threw some beloit articles.  Said he tops out around 93mph.  So the 84-88mph is a bit off.

Velocity
Disclaimer:  I'm a Twins fan.

"He tops out at 93mph."

He may "top out" at 93, but he doesn't hit it often.  I've seen him three times this season (all out of the pen) and saw him hit 92 on only a few occasions.

His fastball sits between 85-89.

I think Morlan is the big sleeper from Beloit.  He just needs to refine his mechanics and he'll be a stud.

by Spooneybarger on Sep 8, 2005 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah
I agree with you on Morlan...

I think his upside is bigger than the 2004 draftee pitchers in front of him (waldrop, rainville, Swarzak)

Morlan is certainly one to watch if he can develop better consistency and control.

Do you have any opinions on Jose Mijares?

to qualify
I was saying "picture" as in what I "pictured him in my mind" looking like.  Wasn't knocking him.

I would question why a 2004 draftee from college went to Low A ball.

But as we all have found out--"You Never Know!"

well
twins are fairly deep at pitching and they often move their guys along slower...unless they are a liriano type.

by hotshotschamp on Sep 8, 2005 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

anyways
i ranked the top 20 twins minor league pitchers and he ranked about 19th...then again we are pretty deep.

Guys like

Liriano #1 potential
Baker #2 Potential
Swarzak#2 potential
Rainville#3 potential
Slowey- #3 potential
Garza- #3 potential
Perkins#3/4 potential
Harben- #2 potential if he gets better control
Morlan- Ace ability, has wicked stuff
Bonser- #4 or #5
Durbin- #5

Are all ahead of him at this point.  That being said until a guy is proven wrong at a level and can't handle it, I'll consider it to be impressive.  And what he's done this year and in the playoffs is just that, impressive.

Agree
I agree that Aselton has been impressive - you can't dispute his numbers.  I'm just not convinced that "deception" guys can succeed past AA unless they have a plus pitch - he doesn't have one.
Decent movement on fastball, but not enough velocity to mow down hitters.
Average slider at best.
Good changeup, but not good enough.

Mijares
Very raw.  Good stuff.  Decent frame.  Some projection.  I'm not crazy about his changeup, but he's still young and reportedly very coachable.

sweet
thanks for answering my questions, i wanted to get out to beloit this year to catch some games but couldn't make it.

Do you have any thoughts on Slowey and Garza and Swarzak who all pitched in Beloit this year, do you like them, and how do you rank them.

Also, does Kyle Waldrop have a shot, or is he just not gonna make it?
