Prospect Retro: Kirk Saarloos

Prospect Retro, per reader request: Kirk Saarloos

Kirk Saarloos was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 3rd round of the 2001 draft, out of Cal State Fullerton. He was an excellent pitcher in college, going 15-2, 2.18 with a 153/23 K/BB for Fullerton before the draft. But his lack of a hot fastball kept him out of the first two rounds. He pitched in 22 games for Class A Lexington after signing, posting a 1.17 ERA and a 40/7 K/BB in 31 innings, obviously way ahead of the Sally League with his pitchability. I gave him a Grade C+ in the 2002 book, writing that he would have a good career as a middle man.

Moved up to Double-A Round Rock in 2002, Saarloos converted back to the starting rotation and was spectacular in the first half, going 10-1, 1.40 in 13 starts with a 82/21 K/BB ratio. He also went 2-0, 2.25 in 2 starts for Triple-A New Orleans, with a 19/2 K/BB. Promoted to Houston and inserted in the rotation, he pitched well at times, going 6-7 in 17 starts, but was hit hard often enough to post a 6.01 ERA.

Saarloos split '03 between Triple- A and the Majors, pitching well at New Orleans. He was better in the Majors than he had been in '02, but his performance was still far from spectacular (4.93 ERA in 36 games) and the Astros began to sour on him. Traded to Oakland in April, 2004, he was dogged by elbow problems for part of the season and ended up pitching just 24 innings for Oakland. Healthy again in '05, he is 7-6, 4.06 in 18 starts, but his K/BB ratio of 32/34 in 109 innings is weak and does not project well for his future.

Saarloos was brilliant in college and the low minors, and just as effective in Double-A, with strong K/BB ratios and a sound K/IP for a guy who doesn't burn the guns. He virtually skipped Triple-A when the Astros stuck him in the Show in 2002, which is always a risk, particularly for finesse pitchers like Saarloos who don't have great stuff and live on the margins of the strike zone. Guys like this often need extra adjustment time. Although he has done well this year, I can't say I'm particularly confident in his ability to pitch well for a long period of time, at least as a starter. The K/IP really concerns me. I still believe he would do better if used as a middle reliever, once through the order, to avoid overexposure.

Thanks John
As a fan it's great to see the back-stories for players like this.  Is it just me, or are there some real similarities between Juan Cruz, Joe Kennedy and Kirk Saarloos?  Not in their styles, but in their career trajectory- brilliance in college/low minors, followed by serious struggles at the highest levels after being moved quickly.  A trend?

A friend of mine often remarks "I don't care if he's throwing a no-hitter, Saarloos needs to go after five".  Then again, he's thrown 2 complete games this year.  I often wonder if "exposure" really has as big of an affect as we think it does.

Thanks again.

Etherton
Frankly, I'd rather see if Seth Etherton would amount to anything; Saarloos is a WYSIWYG guy. Etherton has great AAA numbers, and I don't think his three starts at the MLB level this year (one very good debut, two not so hot) are much of an audition. And to yank him out for Ryan Glynn was a fiasco. But it's hard to argue for promoting Etherton with Kennedy and Cruz around as well, plus semi-prospects like Rheinecker around. He'll need to go elsewhere to get another chance, I think.

I think Sarloos will be the long man next year
Yabu is the long man this year and his option likely wont be picked up.  The battles for the 5th rotation spot and long man will be an interesting competition.  There are several candidates: Meyer, Cruz, Etherton, Kennedy, Rheinecker, and Sarloos.  My guess is Cruz is the 5th starter and Sarloos is the long man.

I wouldn't be suprised to see either Etherton, Kennedy, or Cruz traded this offseason for an established or major league ready corner outfielder.

Duh
How could I forget Meyer. That's how far he's fallen this season -- maybe not officially, but certainly on the radar screen of who's hot or at least doing well. Glad to see him have a couple of decent outings lately.

Thanks John.

Saarloos is an interesting guy.  His K rate in Houston was pretty good (very good the second year).  It's odd to see it completely dissapear in Oakland, even if the A's have preached pitching to contact. It's especially odd since he's got wiffleball movement half the time.

Sinkerballers only follow knuckleballers when it comes to influence on BABIP, right?  I could believe it if told that dead flopping fish Saarloos throws is so tough and unique that he'll never have to K many, though continued success at this rate can't be sustainable.

Anyway, I think Saarloos is kind of the perfect fifth starter.  He's so tenacious.  He goes right at everybody, works fast, throws strikes, and never gives in.    Even given the talent gap, I bet there isn't a guy on the A's who would rather play behind Juan Cruz than Saarloos.
