A middle-of-the-pack system. With one major exception (we?ll get to that in a minute), I don?t think any of these grades will be particularly controversial. Thomas Diamond has first-class stuff, and put to rest many doubts about his command in his early pro performance last summer. Similar performance at higher levels will push him into the Grade A- range. Danks is a bit riskier. I think he was rushed too quickly to the California League last year, but they didn?t ask me. His ceiling is as high as Diamond?s if he can keep his command in gear.

Ian Kinsler came out of nowhere last year, but from looking at this numbers and watching him play, I think he is for real in a Michael Young-sort of way. Juan Dominguez keeps popping up in trade rumors. If he stays healthy he should have a successful career, but that can be said about a lot of people.

Adrian Gonzalez is blocked at first base and also pops up in trade talks. He needs an opportunity, and if he doesn?t break through somewhere this year the ticking on the clock will get much louder and his grade will treadmill.

Chris Young made substantial improvements last year and deserves to show up on more lists than he does.

I had some doubts about Vince Sinisi going into 2004, and I still think his power potential may be overrated by some. As I wrote in my book, his performance in the California League was ?better than skeptics expected but not as good as the optimists hoped.? His Double-A numbers will tell us a lot.

The most controversial grade on this list is Arias at C+. As you know, I try to find a middle ground between statistical performance analysis and traditional scouting, granted I lean to the stat side. In some cases, trying to find a middle ground can leave some guys with a middling grade. Traditional scouts praise Arias: he is extremely athletic, still very young at age 20, and ?projects? well. On some lists he shows up as among the elite prospects in the game.

Performance analysis, however, shows that despite hitting .300 last year, his overall OPS was actually worse than California League average. His walk rate is low, he does not steal bases at a particularly impressive percentage, and he makes too many errors. All of these things are correctable given his extreme youth, but it hasn?t happened yet. I will also note that the times I have seen Arias, he has played very sloppy defense, and looked overmatched at the plate. You could see his tools and athleticism, but there was little refinement.

So, in his case I had a dilemma. Scouts love him. The numbers are mediocre at this point, except for age-relative-to-league. The times I saw him in person (admittedly only twice), he looked pretty bad. So how do I grade him? I went with Grade C+, which will strike many people as much too low. His potential is certainly higher than that, but I want to see more. Feel free to move him up (or down) your own list depending on your own emphasis and bias.

explanation
Can you re-explain how you come up with the weighted average?

What I'd like to see is a straight graded average of each team, but only their Top 10 prospects.

Marshall McDougall
What do you see Marshall McDougall being able to do long term, some thing along the lines of Mark Bellhorn perhaps?

marchall
Marshall won't have Bellhorn's power.

Vince Sinisi
John,

i know you aren't his biggest fan, so i have a feeling what kind of answer you'll give, but aside from doubts about health, power and "batting champion" aspirations doted upon him, how much does age relative to league affect your perception of him.

I'm a big fan, but am fairly unclear about how he'll turn out as he's always been old for his league.

What is a reasonable mlb comp?

i'd love to hear thoughts from texas followers...

Sinisi's splits
Always been old for his league?  Makes it sound like he's been around forever.  He's played 77 games in the minors over the course of a year and a half.   What concerns me about Vincent are the splits:  Overall, he hit .310 / .383 / .472 in 248 Cal League at-bats, blistering right handed pitchers with a .339 / .415 / .517 showing while struggling against lefties at a relatively anemic .235 / .293 / .353 clip.

Ramon Nivar
Do you see him having a rebound year? and what do you see for Jason Hart?

nivar
As I wrote in my book about Nivar, 'I don't know what to make of this guy." He added some homers last year, but at the expense of everything else. Upside looks like .275 with mediocre on-base skills.

Hart has good power but is trapped at his position. Triple-A slugger is his destiny.

Thomas Diamond
I must admit that I do have a bit of a man-crush on Thomas Diamond.  He looks like a top of the rotation innings eater to me, and should move rather quickly in this system.

Re: Diamond
Texas is talking right now as if he's going to start the year with AA Frisco. Which makes me happy, as I have a partial season-ticket package there. I met Diamond in January at a Newberg Report event, and he does not lack for confidence.

My fervent wish is that he'll turn into the best pitcher the Rangers have developed since Kevin Brown. Time will tell whether that's the case.

John: I was a bit surprised at the ranking on Loe. Not so much at where he was ranked in the system, but I thought he'd be more of a B- prospect than a C+. Admittedly, it's a small difference, and I'll confess to being a bit biased, as I wrote an article on him for Jamey's site a couple years back. Just curious why he wasn't given a slightly higher grade, given his command and quick rise through the Ranger system.

loew
There was some deterioration in his K/IP and HR/IP in Triple-A. Enough that I wanted to be cautious. but I do like him.

Re: Loe
Gotcha. Thanks. After Dominguez, Diamond, and Danks, Loe is probably my favorite pitcher in the system. I also like Hudgins and Erik Thompson quite a bit, but Thompson appears destined for the bullpen, given his injury history. It's a shame he can't stay healthy; his career K/BB ratio is just sick...

Not really a prospect anymore, but...
Hi John, I know he's not a prospect anymore, but what do you think of Joaquin Benoit's future?  Will he develop into a good major league starter?

benoit
3:1 K/BB ratio last year. If he's healthy he has a chance still.

Kinsler
John,

Love the website, check it every day.

The Kinsler comments caught my eye - do you see the Rangers moving Soriano either late this year or in the offseason?  Do you see Kinsler getting a shot at 2B and if so, do you have best guess BA/OBP/SLG for 2006?

soriano
There are a lot of rumors and speculation going on right now about Soriano, but I don't think anyone knows anything solid.

Jamey Newberg is the go-to guy for stuff like this. If you don't know his website newbergreport.com, check it out!

Erik Thompson
Is Erik Thompson not with the Rangers anymore?  I'm not trying to be cute, I'm just very surprised that he didn't make the list...

Thompson
ET is still in the system, but injuries are keeping him out of action right now.

thompson
Health questions and a mediocre K/IP rate work against him. He does have excellent command though.

Senreiso?
John:  You really like Mark Roberts more than Juan Senreiso?

senreiso
It's close, I had Senreiso at spot 21. He was a league repeater and isn't that young.

Sinisi
You know Vince Sinisi is injured still.

Most likely will not be able to play until mid season.

My guess is he will start in Rookie league during the summer - move to high A Bakersfield once his strength begins to return. Double A would be a push for him this year unless he makes a sudden recovery.

Great guy, hope he gets through the injury soon.  Would love to see him in Double A, but he has had several set backs (and several surguries) and will need time to get back into the flow.  I hope Texas encourages him and not push him.

Aries
I had your same thoughts on Aries initially as well.  But he really came alive half way through last season.

I got to see him play about twenty-thirty times and I was extremely impressed with him.  His errors tend to be because he gets to balls no one else would even come close to and are just in-experience type errors at this point.

I liked the Stockton (High A) line-up last year.  They really played well together.

Stockton is (was) a tough park to hit in and the wind seemed to be blowing and swirling in all season last year.  Plus, Stockton is an awful place to play baseball.  The crowds were small and anoying.  While I met a few nice people there, most were obnoxious and straight-up rude.

My point - it would not surprise me to see all of the players at Stockton have much better years as they move up in the organization.

Compared to Spokane, WA (What a great place to play minor league baseball); Stockton was a real eye opener.  Makes Montreal seeem warm!
