Top 20 List Summary - Team GPA's

Based on five top twenty lists provided so far, they are ranked as follows:

Athletics     3.20 GPA (Almost a B+)
Twins         3.12
Brewers       3.00 (B all the way!)
Devil Rays    2.94 (almost up there)
Cubs          2.66 (This is significant!)

These GPA's are weighted so that top prospects have a greater effect than the number 20 prospect.

Star-divide

Straight Averages would have the list as follows:

Twins         2.92 (slight advantage)
Athletics     2.92
Brewers       2.75
Devil Rays    2.63
Cubs          2.52

This shows the effect of having several top line prospects at the top of your list.

I used a simple scale of:
A+    4.33
A    4
A-    3.67
B+    3.33
B     3
B-    2.67
C+    2.33
C    2
C-    1.67
D+    1.33
D     1

For the weighted GPA's I gave the top prospect 20 then next 19 and so forth.  Multiplied out and divided by the sum of the weights (210).

Some fun with numbers!

weights??
What is the point of the weighted average (unless you are an A's fan and want to see them leap to the top).  If you want to get a feel for a particular teams farm as a whole then the 20th rated prospect should hold just as much weight as the first!  However if all you want to now is who has the most high rated players than just count up the number of 'A-'s' a team has (since no one has better than an A-):

Athletics     3
Twins         2
Brewers       2
Devil Rays    2
Cubs          0

A's three A- grades
When it boils down to it... the A's just acquired two of those A- prospects by dealing off all-star pitchers.

So while I'd say there farm system is damn strong and worthy of the grades I wouldn't necessarily say it means they are better at scouting, drafting and player development than the Twins.

by natsfan2005 @ Minor League Ball on Feb 18, 2005 2:25 PM EST reply actions

the point!
Is there any point to baseball other than fun!

Weights helps reward teams with top prospects like the Athletics and the same time playing in to their depth.

While not an A's fan, it does show they do have both quality with some depth to there top 20 list.

Your list would not show that the Twins (while not having 3 A quality guys) have a significant deeper top twenty in terms of quality players than the Brewers or the Devil Rays.

That tells you they could easily trade one of their top prospects (3 - 5) without gutting there system.

Nothing you could not gather from doing an in depth study of the three teams.  The weighted GPA's just give us a guide.  A easy way to rank them.

Would you have the Twins top 20 above the A's top twenty?

by kmcsql on Feb 18, 2005 2:35 PM EST reply actions

Twins are deeper
All I was saying is that the weighted average puts a premium on haveing a few really good prospects, not on having a good farm as a whole.  Look at it this way the twins only have 3 'C' prospects on their top 20 opposed to 6 for the A's, but this extra depth is not awarded because the extra 'A' prospect the A's have out WEIGHS it.  Your wieghted GPA discounts depth as much as my only count the 'A' prospects list does.

All I was saying is a straight GPS makes more sense for grading a farm system as a whole

Go M's!

Uh
Nobody said anything about this GPA being a grade for the farm system, just a grade for the top 20 prospects for each team (as originally graded by John Sickels), with emphasis placed on impact talent not depth. If you want to come up with a "depth" grading system of your own, you're welcome to.

Straight GPA
for the top twenty shows the Twins and A's at a tie of 2.92. KMCSQL, copycat! just kidding.

A's vs. Twins
As an avid A's fan, looking at John's grades, I would say the Twin's are a little better, my criteria  being, when we were all in school Honor Roll was usually a b average or better.  The Twins have 17 players and the A's have 14.  So you se we all have different ways of judging such hypothetical info, as a grade anyway

by theblackpearl on Feb 18, 2005 3:48 PM EST reply actions

The top twenty is not the farm system!
Well said CatsBack2Back

Isn't it the point of a farm system to produce major league talent (impact talent at the minor league level).

Also, this is not to say I agree with John Sickels ratings.  A player could have been working on aspects of their game last year that is geared to help them in the future (break out years to be expected in 2005!).  Some players adjust, some never adjust.

Not to mention that there is a hugh amount of dis-information put out by the clubs geared to hide talent or hide lack of talent.

by kmcsql on Feb 18, 2005 3:54 PM EST reply actions

GPA
Don't forget that Mr Sickels only goes down to a C-. The five systems posted so far are all above average, so this isn't too significant, but when he gets around to the Nationals or the Tigers it may make a difference...

Ummm.
I think we're going to find that neither of these teams have the best system. The Angels probably do by far...

southern cal
both southern cal teams will have better farm systems.

Both? What about San Diego?
I think a better term for Dodgers/Angels would be "both Los Angeles teams". :)

Dodgers
I realize no one calculated the Royals and Nats. But those GPAs wouldn't be good anyway. I decided to do the calcs for the Dodgers b/c I wanted to see how their depth in 'B' prospects would rate out. Turns out VERY WELL.
