Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

If you could have a team of minor leaguers, who would they be?

If you could have any 16 players on your MLB team, based on future potential, who would they be? Break your team into C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, (3)OF, DH, (5)SP, RP, CP. Mine would be:

Star-divide

C: Jarrod Saltalamacchia
1B: Prince Fielder
2B: Howie Kendrick
3B: Ian Stewart (assuming this year was a fluke)
SS: B.J. Upton (assuming he can learn to field)
OF: Delmon Young
OF: Jeremy Hermida
OF: Nick Markakis
DH: Billy Butler
SP: Nick Adenhart (future stud)
SP: Cole Hamels (assuming he can remain healthy)
SP: Homer Bailey
SP: Philip Hughes
SP: Jeff Niemann
RP: Alexander Smit (assuming he stays there)
CP: Jon Broxton

I only included players who will most likely play in the minors to start the year. I didn't want to put current prospects like Hermida, Hansen, Fielder, and Zimmerman who will all probably start the year at the MLB level.

Wow, I really like that one.
I think that would be mine, likely.  I'd put in a vote for Jon Lester, but that's probably just due to being a Sox fan.

My list, along with my "bench"!
Hello everyone,

kinbote - Just a little biased. :-)

C - Jarrod Saltalamacchia
1B - Prince Fielder
2B - Howie Kendrick
3B - Alex Gordon
SS - B.J. Upton (if he can field SS, otherwise, substitute Brandon Wood for this spot.)
OF - Carlos Quentin
OF - Jeremy Hermida
OF - Delmon Young
DH - Billy Butler
SP - Adam Miller
SP - Jeremy Sowers
SP - Chad Billingsley
SP - Gio Gonzalez
SP - Nick Adenhart
RP - Tony Sipp
CP - Jonathan Broxton

If I had a bench of the best minor leaguers:

SS B.J. Upton or Brandon Wood (depending on which one is not starting in my lineup above)
3B Ian Stewart
C Brian McCann (if he still's eligible, otherwise I will take C Jeff Mathis)
OF Nick Markakis
OF Brad Snyder
2B Ian Kinsler

Bullpen:
Andrew Brown
Ho Chi Kuo (the Dodgers LHP pitching prospect - not sure about the name)
Travis Bowyer

(Technically, that would be 25 guys, although I'm not sure if I would only have five guys in the bullpen, but two hard-throwing lefties, Sipp & Kuo, along with three hard-throwing righties, Broxton, Brown, and Bowyer is not bad. :-)

Please feel free to add your "bench" as well - it's already a very interesting topic without the "bench."  Thanks for mentioning it ISC. :-)

Take care and have a good day!

J. Brent Cox?
I don't know much about Broxton, though I'm assuming that people know what they're talking about and he's an excellent closer prospect.  But J. Brent Cox was picked a few times over Craig Hansen.  Maybe it's my vicious Boston-bred anti-Yankee bias, but isn't Hansen the better prospect?

What the hey?
I can't believe not a single one of you guys put Andy Marte on your team.

He was better in AAA than Stewart was in A (a year younger), and LaRoche was in AA (Same age).

by aCone419 on Nov 28, 2005 9:37 PM EST reply actions

Marte
That does seem surprising.  But the post-starter asked for potential, and the consensus seems to be the Marte doesnt have as much potential as Gordon or Stewart, altho Marte had a good season, was young for his league and appears about for MLB now.  It's not really a knock on Marte.  Anyway, he was on the 2nd team for the only poster that included one, and would be on others' 2nd team, if they included them.

To me, it's just about as surprising that noone listed F. Pie, even on the 2nd team!

darn, i'm way late...
  • no Wood b/c i want speed mixed in and i dont think he'll repeat 2005 or anything close to it ..  theres already alot of power, so lets put SPEED and a lead-off hitter at SS
  • take Stewart over Marte for the couple extra steals..
  • want headstrong players with high intensity (i.e pedroia)
  • i want THE most dominant arm as my stopper
