Discussion: Disappointing First Base Prospects

I finished the Rotowire Top 100 yesterday and Rotowire subscribers can find it by clicking here

Question for you: three first base prospects fell off the list entirely: Lars Anderson, Eric Hosmer, and Angel Villalona. of this three, which one do you think is most likely to rebound? In other words, if you could have one of these guys, which one would you pick?

UPDATE:  I wrote this post without being aware of the current legal controversy (to put it mildly) regarding Angel Villalona. The reason I didn't know about Villalona's arrest was because I've been almost completely off-grid for the last week. Jeri had surgery two weeks ago. She's fine, but isn't allowed to do any lifting for the rest of the month. As a result, I have been doing almost nothing but child care and household duties, while also trying to cram in baseball stuff in when I can. I hadn't read any baseball news this weekend, and the post was based just on what Anderson, Hosmer, and Villalona had done on the baseball field during the regular season.

Prospect Profile: Ian Desmond

Ian Desmond was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the third round in 2004, out of high school in Sarasota, Florida. He was considered very toolsy but very raw when drafted, showing excellent arm strength and good speed, but lacking power and offensive polish. He hit .227/.272/.292 in 55 games of rookie ball in the Gulf Coast League after signing, hardly impressive numbers through organization officials praised his work ethic and physicality. He did steal 13 bases in 16 attempts. I didn't put him in the 2005 book but would have rated him as a Grade C, with a high ceiling but needing to make a lot of progress.

Blog Update

I'm cranky and tired, have lots of work to do and no time to do it. So bear with me please. This afternoon I'll try to get something up about Ian Desmond. I'm still working on the Rotowire 100 but have made no progress since Tuesday morning.

Hit and Run, September 16th, 2009

Hit and Run, September 16, 2009

**Someone asked me for my opinion on Homer Bailey, pointing out some recent good starts. It is true that his ERA is lower in September (3.63 compared to 5.06 in August and 6.28 in July), but his WHIPS have actually gotten worse (1.79 this month, 1.50 in August, 1.36 in July) so it is hard for me to say that he's actually pitching better. I don't see any reason to change my opinion of him: he's got great stuff but is still more thrower than pitcher. Maybe he'll develop, maybe he won't, no one knows how he will pan out and anyone who says they do is delusional.

Corner Infielders from the 2008 Draft

Corner Bats from the 2008 Draft

There were seven "infield corner" bats drafted in the first round in 2008, one (Eric Hosmer) from high school and six (Pedro Alvarez, Yonder Alonso, Brett Wallace, David Cooper, Ike Davis, and Allan Dykstra) from the college ranks. All were regarded as polished and capable of advancing quickly, though Dykstra was considered a stretch in the first round by most. Let's take a look and see how they did in their first full seasons.

One of my favorite prospects for some time has been Michael Brantley, who is having a great major league trial for Cleveland. Let's review his history and his future.
