Hey Wily Mo
I have been thinking about it and there is one reason why I don't really like this format that I'm not sure you have thought about.  Since people can see all the other votes before posting their own, there is a chance that people are searching through to see where their vote will make a difference and only voting for those prospects.  Does this bother you at all?

by Dfarth on Jan 4, 2008 9:57 AM EST up reply actions

how's that different?  you could see the current results before you voted under the old format too, and a lot quicker besides.

not being a homer
but, Ross Detwiller really belongs on the board at this point.  As the top college lefty in last year's draft, he certainly deserves to be discussed with Parker and Hochevar.  I've been voting for Hochevar because he's got more of a track record, but being younger and left-handed, I think a fair argument could be made for Ross.

I agree that he should be on here already.  Great stuff, good track record and strong pedigree.  BA  loves him as well.

by RBI King on Jan 4, 2008 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

My opinion...
Firstly, I actually think that this process has given incentive for some of the lurkers to register and post in other diaries. It may just be my impression, but it feels that the posting traffic has picked up since Wily Mo started this process.

Secondly, I really like seeing who the community members are voting for, and feel it gives more incentive for fans of particular prospects to make their arguments because the audience is better defined.

So to your concern, I think it cuts both ways, the undecided will certainly be influenced by the voting pattern, and may vote for the "winner", which isn't the best, but at the same time, I think the process acts as incentive for more campaigning and debate, which is really why I like the community list anyway.

Teagarden:
.310/.426/.586 with 28 Doubles and 27 Homeruns in 110 games split between A+ and AA in his first real season of pro ball.  Old for his league (due to TJ surgery and college ball) and K's a ton (128 in 110 games) but also walks, has +power, and is +defensively right now.  People worry because he didn't catch many games last year, but the Rangers wisely eased him back to that after the TJ surgery.  Besides, his D is really the last thing he needs to work on.

I think his FLOOR is as an above average MLB catcher.  Ceiling is Varitek with a little more power and a little better defense.

by rothe on Jan 4, 2008 10:50 AM EST reply actions

+1
That's a great comp; I look at his offensive abilities and think Varitek. Defensively, I think he could be a top 5 catcher in the major leagues a few years from now.

spotlight - josh rodriguez.
i'm going to start making occasional little posts about lesser-known guys i find interesting down here - not necessarily guys i think should get votes now, but hoping to maybe drum up a little support for them down the line.

josh rodriguez

j-rod is a shortstop in the cleveland org.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/R/Josh-Rodriguez-1.shtml

i'd never heard of him until midyear last year, but his pedigree is actually pretty good.  he was considered one of the best college middle infield prospects and a possible first-round pick going into the 2006 draft season, but had one of those injury-related off years and got bumped from SS to 3B at rice by another player and his stock dropped a bit.  the indians seem to like drafting guys like that, grabbing both him and wes hodges in the second round that year.

so he had a mediocre junior year in college, then a mediocre first half in pro ball.  then one day i open up the august 13 BA hot sheet and see this:

3. Josh Rodriguez, ss, high Class A Kinston (Indians)

The 22-year-old once considered among the best shortstops in the 2006 draft is starting to live up to his potential after a slow start to his first full professional season. Rodriguez' turning point may end up being a two-homer, nine-RBI performance on Aug. 2. He's hitting .318/.426/.886 with seven homers and 21 RBIs in August to improve to .254/.336/.453 overall. He hit a homer in four consecutive games from June 6-9.

"I told (Kinston manager Mike Sarbaugh) that Josh Rodriguez was going to be a better hitter than Wes Hodges," Indians defensive coordinator Ted Kubiak said. "It's still early so who knows, but it's just taken him a little longer to get going . . . Defensively, he's a little short going to his right side, but he's getting better. The power is what's surprising. It seems like he hits a home run every other day. You have to give him credit for sticking to his work after struggling for so long."

now, i'm not always a hot sheet whore.  i'll pass on guys.  (we're talking about my fantasy team now, yes.)  henry sosa was #1 one week; i thought it over and passed on him.  low-A pitchers, there's always another one, i figured.  same with FDLS.  kind of regret that one now.  ryan royster was #2 over j-rod this same week, passed on him.  but saw this entry on j-rod, read it, thought about it... went out and googled him a little bit, got some background... sat back in my chair and processed for about ten seconds... and then RAN to my league to pick him up before someone else did.

college player in his first full year, shortstop, hitter.  once considered a top college prospect.  already in high-A, now hitting, and for power, plus walking.

he may not be a full shortstop defensively, but it sounds like he's not awful, and people seem to really like the bat, to the point where they think it could play at 3B offensively, let alone 2B.

check out the splits:

http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?pl=446044&tm=KinCAR&bp=b

in particular look at his BABIP during the huge august.  no jump at all.  still .275.  sometimes i wonder if all the BABIP carping is overrated, because it seems like any time a guy has a hot streak the BABIP is always high and maybe it just has to be.  but not this time.

he'll strike out some (95K / 490 AB), but also has pretty good discipline (66 BB).

even if he's not a SS, if he can play 2B he might be a pretty good player.  and it seems like nobody's on him right now.  you want to see more before you buy in all the way based on one hot month, of course, but i definitely think he's top 100 material somewhere.

anyway this is why i keep listing him on my little lists of candidates.  pet prospect!

Parra's stuff
Mid-90s fastball that used to be faster but injuries have taken their toll as well as a curveball and changeup.

As to why it took so long for him to move up; he was injured. Most notably was a torn rotator cuff in 2005 that seems to have had lingering effects.

He will get a shot to compete for a starting spot. If everyone is healthy, Sheets, Gallardo and Suppan have spots locked up and that means Capuano, Bush, Vargas, Villanueva and Parra will compete for the final two spots. I would speculate Parra starts in the bullpen to limit innings but finds his way into the rotation before long.

Hochevar
Whats with all the love, the guy got hammered in AA and AAA this year.  23-24 year old top prospects should not have an ERA close to 5in the minors.

i agree
i'm on the fence about him. i never thought he profiled as a #1, thought he was a #2. but his numbers just aren't that impressive. i wouldn't go keith law and call him a #4 but i'm thinking mid-rotation. it's puzzling because he does have good stuff. i can see why people are still voting for him - i wouldn't be surprised to see him turn it around - but i'm not sold on him here. he's probably the guy in the high minors who would cause the most disagreement amongst people.

bahh!
HOCHEVAR WASN'T ALLOWED TO THROW HIS PLUS SLIDER (AND HIS SINKER) FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THIS YEAR. ONCE HE WAS THROWING ALL OF HIS PITCHES, HE POSTED MUCH BETTER COMPONENTS AND A SUB 4 ERA.

I hate caps lock, but this has been explained like 4 times already.

This guy is Iran, however, but pitches in Japan.

Sub 4 ERA?
I'm pretty sure he spent the second half of the year in AAA where he had an ERA of 5.12

He did have 4 good games in his short stint in the majors, but that only brings his second half ERA down to 4.58.  And you would think his plus slider would help him rake up the strike outs but he only averaged 6.24 SO/9 in AAA and the majors.

August-September numbers
Were what he was talking about.

I like him here.

I saw him compared to Matt Morris somewhere here...he's had a damn solid career.
