Community Prospects Report 5-16-07

Lots of early action today so I thought I'd go ahead and start this.  Justin Upton will be in action soon.  Many other games are already underway - Kinston is already beating up on Frederick and Brandon Erbe.  Here's his line for today:

3IP 7H 7ER 2BB 1K 2HR.

I'm beginning to think Erbe is hurting.  Or maybe he is working exclusively on the breaking pitches or something - any Orioles fans know?

Anyways, what are you watching today?

make that
12 ER. he didnt walk that many guys this time. im beginning to wonder the same. hes either hurt, working on breaking stuff, or he just has no control over his stuff right now and is laying it up. hes 19 years old, so stuff like that can really get in his head and things just spiral downward, until eventually hell hit a low point and start doing better, and then hell get his confidence back up, and then at some point hell start dominating again. if carlos zambrano can have outings like this one, so can erbe

I Didn't Think They'd Send Him Back Out
But they did...Erbe goes back out for the 4th and gets completely destroyed again.  Final line:

3IP 11H 12ER 2BB 1K 3HR

Milledge
Does anybody hear what Milledge did or said ?

I heard the Mets are not happy with whatever he did.

From NYPost via fannation.com
The Mets issued a statement last night condemning a song from a record company that, according to the company's Web site, is co-founded by Lastings Milledge and features him on the track. The song, "Bend Ya Knees" by Manny D featuring L Millz, has lyrics ripe with vulgarity, demeaning references to women and explicit sexual content.

It Occured to Me
That Upton's presence might get Carlos going because 1. it would take some pressure off of him and 2. it would alert him that others in the organization are passing him up.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him start hitting some...

Max Ramirez
Hi indiansfan,

I'm curious what you know about Max Ramirez and his defense behind the plate.  I've been a fan of his since before he was dealt to Cleveland last year, and I'm curious if he can stick at catcher.  His bat reminds me so much of V-Mart at the same age and level, with Ramirez showing nearly identical plate discipline as well.  Ramirez hasn't hit for average quite as well as Martinez, but his IsoD has been higher so far in the minors than V-Mart's.  If Ramirez can stay at catcher, he definitely could be a top hitter at the position.

On a side note, if a long term deal can't be worked out with Hafner, do you think it's likely he would be traded at the deadline next year?  V-Mart could slide to the DH spot or share that and 1B with Garko, with Shoppach taking over behind the plate.

Any info on either topic or both will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Info. on both questions!
Hello gatling,

Ironically, we were just talking about Max Ramirez yesterday at LetsGoTribe in a Minors Recap - you can see that here - there are still some questions about his defense, which is probably why he'll probably won't be promoted to AA right away, even though it looks he could probably handle AA offensively right now.

From what I've seen from the Kinston boxscores, he hasn't done that badly behind the plate; his biggest problem seems to be passed balls (he has 6 of them.)  Without doing extensive research on it, I think Ramirez has also had a bit of trouble throwing out runners, though how much that is attributable to him, I can't say for sure.

I know Ramirez is splitting time with Chris Gimenez (another position player-turned catcher) and to a lesser extent, Chao Kuan Wu (22-YO Taiwanese catcher who's mostly catching Sung Wei-Tseng, a 22-YO Taiwanese pitcher.)  Ramirez is getting more of the playing time behind the plate than Gimenez (probably because Ramirez is only 22-YO, whereas Gimenez is 24-YO, plust the fact that Ramirez arrived at Kinston first before Gimenez, and Wu as well.)

Therefore, I think Ramirez will get some more time to iron out his defense, but he'll probably get promoted to AA Akron by the second half of 2007 if he continues to produce offensively at this pace, regardless of where his defense is at.  If he can make solid enough progress with his defense, I could see where he could be similar to Victor, with perhaps a bit more arm strength, though maybe not as solid in the other areas of catching, areas where Victor is solid to above-average in (game-calling, blocking balls, etc.)

As for Hafner, I think many Indians' fans, myself included, thought Hafner would be signed by now, as most thought he would be an easier sign than Sabathia, but to this point, talks are on hold until the offseason (though something could happen around the ASB like it did with Cliff Lee last year.)

At any rate, if the Indians can't sign Hafner to a long-term extension by this time next season, I suppose they would listen to all offers that came their way regarding Hafner, but unless they're blown away with an offer, I suspect they'll probably keep him through the 2008 season, then try to resign him in the offseason; if they can't, they'll just take the 1-2 extra draft picks he'd net for them.

Hopefully, this helps to answer your questions; if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Gomez
2-4 with another double in his 2nd start for the mets, would of been 3-4 with 2 doubles if ramirez didn't make a great diving catch.  He's definetly raw but he did good against Hill.

Gomez
I think they are going to play him against lefties from what Willie said. But we'll see he has been playing well.

yes...
I love how you know that!!

Aditi Kinkhabwala quotes Randolph in The Record.

"When young kids come up, there's a lot of adrenaline and a lot of energy going. Sometimes pitchers take them for granted," Randolph said, not wanting to put too much stock in Gomez's Day One showing.

"If there's a lefty we can run him against, he might get a chance to play. ... We'll just use him as a backup right now."

Giants Report
Looks like we kind of got buried by the MOD diaries.

Fresno and Augusta were idle.  There was really nothing of note in the CT or SJ games today.  SJ got shutout by Hynick and Modesto 5-0.  The SJ offense has pretty much ground to a halt.

Dodgers Sleeper
22yr 6'5 195lb right hander in the dodgers system. Just recently converted to pitching with last year being the first time he pitched full time.

He is just basically owning the California League with a stellar performance tonight..

7IP 3H 0ER 0bb 9k

his last 6 starts consist of..

36IP 16H 9bb 41K 1.25ERA

in terms of age and level of competition, hes basically at the level where most 2006 college pitchers start out in their first full season of pro ball. I think if he handles a midseason promotion to AA well, he could become a serious prospect.
