Community Minor League Report for 04-22-2007

It's Timmy Time in Fresno again!  2:05 PM PDT!

Lots of early games on a Sunday, so we'll get the Daily Diary fired up early.

Other probably starters that caught my eye today:

Jeff Niemann- Durham  Boy, Durham seems to have in interesting pitcher going every day!  Niemann is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA but 17 K, 5 BB in 15 IP with a WHIP of 1.07.

Charlie Zink goes for the Portland Sea Dogs in the Eastern League.  Isn't he a knucklballer?  He's 1-0 with a 1.5 ERA is what appears to be just one start so far.

Gio Gonzalez, 3-0, 1.17 ERA goes for Birmingham in the Southern League.  This is his second stint in AA, but he's just 22 yo.

Eric Hurley goes to Frisco in the Texas League.  2-0 with a 0.98 ERA.

Greg Reynolds takes the mound or Tulsa, also in the Texas League. So-so start last outing, but 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA.

I'm not sure if the Giants are on Extra Innings today.  If they aren't, I'm heading out to Rancho Cucamonga to catch the San Jose Giants agains the Quakes.  If they are, then I have a problem.  Do I stay home and watch Matt Cain pitch against the D'backs or go out to a single A game in person?  What would you do?

Gio Gonzalez
Gio is just 21... he was 20 last year in AA for the entire season, which is why everyone shouldn't get down on him for struggling a bit there.

Gio
He reminds me a lot of Rich Hill with the high K rates, Walk Rates, and the Curveball.

Response
I have to say . . .not really.

From a physical standpoint, they're not very similar at all. Gonzalez throws significantly harder, but obviously he can't match the overall quality and the command of Hill's curveball.

Hill is a lot closer to a finesse pitcher than you would think from his stats. On his good days, he can pound the zone with a solid fastball, shows confidence in his change, and can move his curve to both sides of the plate without a problem.

Gio is a true power lefty, just a different style.

Hill is also...
7 inches taller than Gio.

Greg Reynolds
Reynolds is taking on Jaime Garcia.  should be a pretty good matchup.

by fewgoodcards on Apr 22, 2007 11:47 AM EDT reply actions

Garcia
He's been wild this year 8 BB in 10 IP.  I'm not sure what to think of him, is his a #2 behind Carpenter or a mid to back part of a rotation.

by Bravesin07 on Apr 22, 2007 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

garcia
reports this spring had him adding a few mph to the fastball and sitting at 93 in several outings.  he has an outstanding curve and a decent change.  a lefty with that type of stuff and his usual control (he has struggled this year so far) could be a 2.

by fewgoodcards on Apr 22, 2007 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Garcia is done for the day
6 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 1 earned, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts

he did give up a homer, but a very good game for jaime.  he leads reynolds 2-1 as reynolds has given up 2 bombs to joe mather.  mather has 7 homers already this year.

by fewgoodcards on Apr 22, 2007 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Reynolds is also out
7 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 earned, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts

by fewgoodcards on Apr 22, 2007 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Chris Perez finished this one off
a perfect ninth with 3 strikeouts for Perez who has been dealing lately.  in his first game a 25 mph wind blew a flyball out for a 3 run homer, but since he has been unhittable.  in his last 5 appearances he has gone 5 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, and 10 strikeouts.

as i mentioned earlier Joe Mather went 2-4 with a pair of homers off Greg Reynolds.  for the year he is hitting .380/.446/.880 with 4 doubles, 7 homers, and only 5 strikeouts in 50 innings.  this year's Terry Evans?

Colby Rasmus went 1-3 with his 5th double and a walk.  the double knocked in the winning runs in the 8th inning and he also made a great leaping catch up against the wall earlier in the game.

See Cain pitch
there'll be plenty of other chances to see the San Jose Giants when one of the top 2 young SPs in the NL isn't pitching.... Besides, after his competition, Cole Hamels, pitched that awesome performance last night, Cain might want to answer wtih a gem of his own! ;-)

Leaning
Yeah, that's the way I'm leaning right now.

by DrBGiantsfan on Apr 22, 2007 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Hamels
Hello!  I hadn't seen that one. Don't usually follow the Phillies too closely.  Not sure Cain is up to 15 K's.  He might be more likely to pitch a no-hitter than ring up 15.  Cain needs to get ahead on more counts and needs a better put-away breaking ball to get those kind of K numbers.  Not saying he won't do it, but 15 K's is a lot.

BTW.  I know a pharmaceutical rep who says she went to the same HS as Cole Hamels and Chase Utley.  Knows both of them and their families.  For whatever that's worth.

by DrBGiantsfan on Apr 22, 2007 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Worth a lot
they're pretty much idols here... I may have trouble convincing people that Pat Burrell is almost as good as Soriano, but if you bring up Utley or Hamels, everyone's happy. I didn't even know they went to the same HS!

Oh man, I just got transfered to Sacramento.  I'm gonna be moving out there in about 2 or 3 weeks.  Is it a cool city?  I'm sorta nervous, don't know much about it...

sure is
depends too on where you live/work. The ballpark (AAA RiverCats) is great; right on the river and next to Old Town. Went to undergrad at CSU Sac but lived mostly at the base of the foothills, just east of Roseville. You're a couple hours from the bay area and a couple hours from tahoe. Its great!
Whom do you work for and where you looking at working/living?

Re
I work for CEMEX (Cement, Ready Mix concrete, Construction materials, world leader), and the regional offices I'll be working at are in El Dorado  Hills.  I'd like to be a little closer to Sacramento, however, so right now I'm looking at apartments in Roseville, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, and maybe Sacramento, as long as it's close to the 50 / the Eastern side of Sacramento.  Problem is, I don't know anyone, never been there, so i don't know what kind of places they are.  I'm moving down in two weeks...

I grew up in the Bay Area (Palo Alto, to be exact) so I know that area relatively well, have a lot of friends still there, but none of them know Sacramento.  And I remember Lake Tahoe very fondly.  We used to go skiing there every winter, though I don't remember what it's like in the summer time...

Daniel Bard is terrible again
2.1 innings, 5 hits, 6 runs, 4 earned, 4 walks, 2 strikeoutss

he has been absolutely horrid this year.  his ERA is 10.12, he has walked 16 in 10.2 IP, and he has only struck out 5.  you can't get much worse than that.  i know the cal league is tough, but it is not this tough.  early nomination for worst starting pitcher in the minor leagues.

its not just bard, that whole rotation except for bowden has been awful.
justin masterson  6.00 ERA, 7 walks in 12 innings after walking only 2 in 31.2 innings last year
kris johnson  9.53 ERA in 11.1 innings
mike rozier  7.80 ERA and 27 hits allowed in 15 innings

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone, I hope you've all had a great weekend!

The Indians' Overview is up for Saturday, in case you missed it - I just put it up - sorry - it's been a busy weekend - my grandmother turned 90 today!  :-)

In that Saturday report, you'll find out that J.D. Martin struggled, part of the reason why Crowe continues to struggle at AA, a great day for Stephen Head and Josh Rodriguez, a "patient" day for Jared Goedert, and Brandon Snyder's tough day at the plate.

Onto Sunday's report (YTD ERAs in parentheses):

AAA Buffalo - lost to Pawtucket (BOS's AAA aff.) 4-1; 66 degrees, sunny, 13 MPH wind R to L:

RF Franklin Gutierrez - 2-4, 1 RBI (.361 - BA has really climbed over the last week!)
DH Shin-Soo Choo - 0-3, 1 K (.294 - conversely, Choo's has really fallen over the last week!)
CF Ben Francisco - 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K (.306)
LF Brad Snyder - 0-3, 1 K (.200)

RHP Brian Slocum - 5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 3 HR (2 solos and a 2-run shot; CF David Murphy hit one solo, while RF Brandon Moss hit the 2-run shot); 6 GO, 4 FO; 58 of 93 pitches for strikes (another poor outing for 2nd-round 2002 pick out of Villanova.)
RHP Jim Ed Warden - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K; 2 GO, 1 FO, 15 of 27 pitches for strikes (2.35)
LHP Juan Lara - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K (1.42 - allowed inherited runner from Warden to score.)
RHP Brian Sikorski - 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 WP; 3 GO, 0 FO; 8 of 17 pitches for strikes (0.00 - was a bit lucky today as his command was off.)

SS Ed Rogers - 2-5, 1 R, 2 K (.246 - 2 more Ks to an already high total.)
CF David Murphy - 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB (.264)
RF Brandon Moss - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.300)

LHP Abe Alvarez - 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K; 7 GO, 4 FO; 56 of 94 pitches for strikes (5.52 - 1st solid start of the season for 2nd Rd. 2003 pick out of Long Beach State.)

AA Akron - defeated Reading (PHI's AA Aff.) 14-3; 76 degrees, sunny, 5 MPH wind out to LF (all-time record attendance of 9,880):

CF Trevor Crowe - 1-6 (.140 - nope - playing in his natural position of CF isn't helping his bat either.)
SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 2-5, 2 R, 1 3B (.367 - may be back at Buffalo by the AS Break at this rate!)
RF Brian Barton - 2-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI (.279)
1B Jordan Brown - 2-2, 3 R, 3 BB (.213)
LF Jonathan Van Every - 2-3, 3 R, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K (.357)
3B Pat Osborn - 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 E (2 - fielding) (.275)
2B Argenis Reyes - 3-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI (.245)

LHP Aaron Laffey - 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 HR (solo shot); 11 GO, 4 FO (1.50 - another great outing for just turned 22-YO 16th Rd. 2003 pick out of HS.)
RHP Jake Dittler - 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K; 2 GO, 3 FO (1.74 - first bad outing of 2007.)
RHP Bubbie Buzachero - 1.0 IP, 2 H; 2 GO, 1 FO (0.00)

High-A Kinston - Day off!

Low-A Lake County - lost to Delmarva (BAL's Low-A Aff.) 5-4; 77 degrees, sunny, 6 MPH wind out to CF:

3B Jared Goedert - 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K (.312 - 6 BB in last 2 games.)
LF Nick Weglarz - 1-3, 1 R, 2 BB (.235 - 4 BB in last 2 games - 19-YO is holding his own in SAL.)
SS Carlos Rivero - 1-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E (4- fielding) (.241 - 18-YO has brought his BA up of late.)
RF Roman Pena - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB (.244 - 20-YO isn't doing too badly in the SAL either; much projectable young talent on the Captains' roster this season!)

RHP Michael Eisenberg - 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K; 3 GO, 7 FO (7.36 - solid outing for 22-YO, 6'7", 200 lb. 8th Rd. 2006 pick out of Marietta College.)
RHP Cody Bunkelman - 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 K; 2 GO, 2 FO (0.84 - solid start for 22-YO 6'3", 225 lb. 6th Rd. 2004 pick out of Itasca CC.)
RHP Neil Wagner - 1.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 BS (2); 1 GO, 2 FO (6.75 - the going much tougher in Low-A so far for the 23-YO, 6'0", 195 lb. 21st Rd. 2005 pick out of North Dakota State.  He gave up just 16 H and 9 BBs, while striking out 50, in 32.1 IP in the NY-Penn League last season and had a 1.39 ERA.)

Delmarva:
PH Brandon Snyder - 1-1, 1 RBI (.224 - better day for 20-YO 1st Rd. 2005 pick out of HS.)

Take care and have a great day!

wheres marty wiesler wvuit pitcher
you take away bad games one where rverybody but the fans were thrown-out by some of the worst umpiring ever and another after oitching in 0-10 degree windchill sporting the flu of course shouldn't have pitched but did you have the lowest opp.bat era posted along with a no hitter against one of the higher ranked teams a couple of 1 hitters and strike to ball ratio un hear of. versital starter good for 9+ and gets stonger and has baseball awareness and focus of any situation. Maynot be the school of past hopefuls but the numbers are there and they've been constant

Giants Report
Well, Timmy Time got rained out.  Not too much else worth talking about other than Matt Cain's major league performance today.

New Britain edged CT 10-9.

John Bowker- 3 for 4, HR(3), BB.  BA= .340.  Maybe Bowker is finally going to hit like we all thought he would when he was drafted out of Long Beach State?

San Jose beat Rancho Cucamonga 4-1.  Not too much exciting to report here.  Dave McKae puts up good numbers at this level, but hard to project a major league career for a guy who's fastball tops out at 85 MPH.

Augusta shellacked Kannapolis 7-0.

Ben Snyder- 6 IP, 0 R.  Snyder is another college draftee who might be too advanced for the Sally League.

Little smudge on Martinez...
Good to see that the organization isn't afraid to do this though:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/04242007/sports/mets/pedros_on_target_for_return_in_august_mets_mark_hal e.htm

Fernando Martinez, the Mets' 18-year-old marvel, was pulled from Sunday's Double-A Binghamton game because he was "not running as hard to first base," according to Mets VP of Player Development Tony Bernazard.

"It's a policy of the organization no matter who it is," said Bernazard, who said he spoke with the outfielder on Sunday.
