2014 Predictions Review - with New Wrong Predictions!

The 2014 MLB season is winding down, and if you recall, I made some predictions. As Ed Koch, or an afficianado of a certain green, high-caffeine, carbonated beverage whose stock has run out might ask, "How Am I Doin (Dewin')"?

NL East

I got the Nationals right, and I even got that Bryce Harper would land on the DL (not a hard prediction). Stephen Strasburg's arm has held up, although he did almost brain a little girl recently. The Braves are also second, as I predicted, but the rest of the division is all wrong. The Phillies have really made Ruben Amaro's bad contracts come home to roost in a hurry, and the Marlins haven't been quite as big a scam as I thought. The Mets have been very Metsian.

NL Central

I still think the Brewers will crash and burn and give the division to the Cardinals. That's been a theme in recent years, and the Brewers are not particularly solid. I had the Pirates second and the Reds third, and I don't think the Brewers will fall that far. The good (bad) old Cubs, though. So reliable.

NL West

The Giants gave the Dodgers a run, but that Dodger pitching is too good. I chose August 27th as the clinching day, so I was a little off there, by three weeks or so. You can throw a tarp over the Padres, D'Backs, and Rockies, and you should. Preferably to sufficate them.

AL East

Complete whiff. The Orioles? How did that happen? The Yankees, Jays and Rays are duking it out for distant second, happy that they are not the Red Sox. I mean, I got this one almost completely upside down. The Sox have gone from terrible to great to terrible faster than a Dutch footballer's ankles.

AL Central

The Tigers will never be Royals (Royals). Not they wanted to be when the season started, but they would take it now. Hoo-boy. Justin Verlander needs to step away from Kate Upton ASAP if they are to have any chance. Would you care about your ERA in that situation? Everybody else more or less conformed to plan, with the Indians taking a small step back. The White Sox's Jose Abreu is wondering when he can defect again. The Twins are a baseball team of little note.

AL West

Is Jerry Jones secretly running the Rangers? Good gravy. The Angels and Athletics are A-mazing. That's the race to watch. Billy Beane will try to see if he can sneak the rest of the halfway decent parts of the Red Sox and Cubs pitching staffs through waivers, while Mike Trout will just smile, say "aw, shucks" and hit liners off whoever they trot out there. Should be fun. The Mariners are actually playing meaningful baseball in September! If I start hearing about the "10th Man", though, it's clobberin' time. The Astros are allegedly still playing.

New Playoff Predictions (also guaranteed wrong!):

NL Central - Cardinals

NL West - Dodgers

Wild Cards - Brewers, Braves

AL Cenral - Tigers

AL West - Athletics

Wild Cards - Angels, Mariners

WORLD SERIES

Nationals vs. Athletics

After the Presidents Race becomes a national sensation in games 3, 4 and 5 of the World Series, Athletics ownership will counter with the Race Of The Al Davises. Young Al (in a sharkskin suit with dark, slicked-back hair) will take the early lead, while Just Win, Baby Al (in a silver track suit, sunglasses, and even darker hair) will lurk a close second, and then Old Al (in a wheelchair and band-aids on his head) will sue both of the other Al's right near the finish line and they will all claim to have won as the O.co Coliseum dugouts become engulfed in sewer water. Games 6 and 7 will be moved to an empty lot in San Jose.
