I realize people will run with this thing the way they will and, Manny didn't handle himself with much maturity over the weekend but, here is my question, separate from that...
Why is it okay to throw a baseball at a person but, outrageously awful to throw a bat at someone?
I actually think I know the answer, which really is as simple as... Because it just much more common to see a baseball thrown at someone. That doesn't mean it is right though. People get tossed out of games for throwing at people but, it is the standard for doing business in the game and, I don't think there is a manager in baseball who doesn't endorse it, in certain situations.
It is still dangerous, stupid, and immature though. It also makes me kind of embarrassed to watch the best baseball players in the world acting like that. I played baseball in high school, and 1 year of college and, I thought this then too... that it is was something that kids do, that needs to be outgrown. This is the freaking big leagues, man. A great player named Ray Chapman actually DIED in 1920 from getting hit in the head with a baseball and, many, many players have had their careers damaged because of baseballs hitting ballplayers. If Machado threw a bat, while on the field, that is stupid and immature and dangerous, but so is what Fernando Abad did, and, nobody really cares much about that right now.
If I was a manager, or commissioner, I would say that throwing a baseball at a persons body because you are mad at them is punk teenager shit, cowardly and, it could be argued that it is potentially criminal, if you injure someone and you weren't actually attempting to get them out? If you have a problem with somebody, go talk to them like a man or, if you have to, go fight it out.
Maybe we could eliminate it if, if you hit someone, and they charge the mound, nobody were allowed to break it up for a few minutes? Everyone should have to at least consider the possibility of receiving an ass whippin' before they throw something at someone, eh? I think that is fair.
