D'Backs MOD #2

With the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft rapidly approaching, it's time to update the potential candidates for the D'Backs pick at #15 overall. Going by the first fourteen picks in the "John Sickels Mock Draft Mock Draft" posted by AndrewTorrez, those who were selected from picks #1-14 are withdrawn from consideration. So without further adieu, here is my updated big board for Arizona's first round selection:

RHP Touki Toussaint - Coral Springs Christian HS (FL)

LHP Sean Newcomb - Hartford University

C/1B Kyle Schwarber - University of Indiana

OF Monte Harrison - Lee Summit West HS (MO)

RHP Sean-Reid Foley - Sandalwood HS (Jacksonville, FL)

SS Jacob Gatewood - Clovis HS (CA)

RHP Eric Fedde - University of Nevada Las Vegas

I try not to draft for need, but it's abundantly clear that at the big league level, the D'Backs pitching is in shambles, and lacks a big time arm (at least until Corbin comes back). Throwing Toussaint or Newcomb into the mix with the likes of Archie Bradley, Braden Shipley, Aaron Blair, and Jose Martinez would give Arizona five high-upside arms in an increasingly competitive NL West. I'm quite intrigued with raw HS outfielder Monte Harrison as well. But assuming either Toussaint or Newcomb is the first selection, the D'Backs could go a variety of ways with pick #54 in the second round. Again, all players that were selected in the mock draft mentioned above are withdrawn from consideration, so here's who I'm looking at with this pick:

RHP Spencer Adams - White County HS (Cleveland, GA)

OF/1B Mike Papi - University of Virginia

RHP Nick Howard - University of Virgina

LHP Foster Griffin - The First Academy (Orlando, FL)

RHP Jack Flaherty - Harvard-Westlake HS (Sherman Oaks, CA)

LHP Cody Reed - Ardmore HS (AL)

RHP Joseph Gatto - St. Augustine Prep (Hammonton, NJ)

This draft is painfully thin on impact bats, which makes Papi an even hotter commodity than he would be in previous drafts. I love the upside of Adams, as well as the knockout fastball/curve combination of Nick Howard, but an on-base machine with plus power is exactly what the D'Backs need, which is why Papi would be the selection here. As far as the rest of the draft is concerned, we'll see how the board shapes out. Nonetheless, here are some guys I'm intrigued by:

LHP Justus Sheffield - Tullahoma HS (TN)

LHP Matt Imhoff - Cal Poly

SS Josh Morgan - Cal Lutheran HS (Orange, CA)

LHP Cody Reed - Ardmore HS (AL)

2B/OF Brian Anderson - University of Arkansas

LHP Carson Sands - North Florida Christian HS (Tallahassee, FL)

OF Matt Railey - North Florida Christian HS (Tallahassee, FL)

C Aramis Garcia - Florida International University

OF Dylan Davis - Oregon State University

RHP Wyatt Strahan - University of Southern California

C Jakson Reetz - Norris HS (Firth, NE)

RHP Brett Graves - University of Missouri

Here is the rundown of the D'Backs selections through the first four rounds, with the ideal/somewhat realistic D'Backs selections as well.

Rd. 1 #16 Overall ($2,338,200): RHP Touki Toussaint - Coral Springs Christian HS (FL)
Rd. 2 #54 Overall ($1,034,500): OF Mike Papi - University of Virginia
Comp. B #69 Overall ($821,100): LHP Justus Sheffield - Tullahoma HS (TN)
Comp. B #70 Overall ($808,600): OF Matt Railey - North Florida Christian HS (FL)
Rd. 3 #89 Overall ($603,400): C Aramis Garcia - Florida International University
Rd. 4 #120 Overall ($432,300): RHP Wyatt Strahan - University of Southern California

So those are my thoughts on the the direction the D'Backs should go in the upcoming draft, and feel free to post comments, suggestions, and ideas, as all would be much appreciated!
