I'm new to MinorLeagueBall (at least in terms of posting), but I'm really looking forward to discussion about the draft. The Red Sox have the #26 overall pick, the #33 overall pick, the #68 overall pick, the #104 overall pick, and the #135 overall pick.
In the first four rounds in the recent past, they have gone with a high school player 44% of the time, a college player 56% of the time, a bat 48% of the time, and an arm 52% of the time. What stands out to me here is the balance. They don't seem to favor one type of player, but look to go with the best player available mentality.
That's the strategy I'm going to take. I'll be taking the players that are most likely to develop into effective MLB players. That means I'm most likely to take a low ceiling/ high floor player over a high ceiling/low floor player, but it doesn't mean all my picks will fall in line with that. The majority will though.
With that said, some guys I have my eyes on in the first round are Sean Newcomb, Conor Gillaspie, Kodi Medeiros, Derek Fisher, and AJ Reed (all listed as 20th or later in the BA mock draft). We'll worry about the next 3 rounds later, but who do you like for the 1st round? Feel free to include guys I didn't mention, these are just ones off the top of my head. I'll post scouting reports for each player mentioned.
