And so it begins!
A's this year have quite the bland draft positioning. No compensation picks and no lottery picks. Just a 1 pick per round year. On top of that, we'll be picking towards the back of each round. The last two drafts the A's have picked an advanced high school bat around the back end of the first round (Daniel Robertson at #37ish and Billy McKinney at #24ish). There should be some still available around there this year as well. They've also gone for an upside play with college pitchers in the second or third round, although Sanburn is already in relief and Overton needed TJS. There's also the usual high school LHP like Twomey and Kohler.
Here are the A's picks
Round 1: 25
Round 2: 66
Round 3: 102
Round 4: 133
For the first round some of my targets are:
Forrest Wall, 2B- Highly advanced bat, injury concern obviously but holy crap he has an advanced bat. He has some strength and pretty good speed. Also have i mentioned that he has an advanced bat?
Derrick Hill, CF: I don't think he'll drop this far, but he's another advanced bat with some pop and very good defense in the outfield and the arm to stick in center.
Michael Chavis, 3B- Gritty gamer who plays the game the right way. Lots of bat speed leading to above average pop. Another guy who I don't think will drop this far
Luke Weaver, SP- Advanced college arm, above average fastball and changeup but needs to work on breaking ball. Fairly smooth delivery
Monte Harrison, OF- Beast of an athlete in the outfield. Strong arm, strong bat, strong speed. Just a tool box
Derek Fisher, OF- (Insert transitioning from NBA to MLB joke here)
For the second round, just a few targets might be
JD Davis, CIF
Chris Ellis, RHP
Jeren Kendall, OF
Greg Allen, OF
Gareth Morgan, OF
Trace Loehr, SS
Taylor Sparks, CIF
