Good afternoon prospect watchers. I hope your weekend is going well. Down to business here as we await trade deadline transactions.
***Yesterday's Minor League Ball Gameday thread.
***If i were dictator of baseball, I would wait until after the trade deadline has passed before announcing any Biogenesis suspensions. But knowing baseball, they will announce the suspensions at the same time the trades are occurring, stomping all over the trade stories which are supposed to generate excitement for the pennant races.
***Houston Astros prospect George Springer hit an inside-the-park home run yesterday for Triple-A Oklahoma City. VIDEO LINK. Springer now has nine homers in 28 games since being promoted to the Pacific Coast League, hitting .347/.440/.684 overall and a combined .310/.410/.606 on the season with 33 steals and 28 homers.
***New York Mets prospect Matthew Koch allowed just one hit over seven innings for Low-A Savannah in the Sally League last night, striking out three, retiring 18 in a row at one point. Drafted in the third round last year from the University of Louisville, the right-hander from Cherokee, Iowa, has a high 4.76 ERA in 81 innings, but with an excellent 68/4 K/BB ratio. . .that's right, four walks. . .but has given up 99 hits.
***There is another player named Matt Koch in the minor leagues, this one in the Twins system, a catcher hitting .297/.365/.420 with 28 walks and 60 strikeouts in 269 at-bats for High-A Fort Myers in the Florida State League. He was a 12th round pick in 2011 out of Loyola Marymount. Koch has been a solid run producer in A-ball with a 126 wRC+ this season, but is old for the level at age 24. Still, he's hit well to this point in his career and is a non-bad defender behind the plate. He bears watching.
***White Sox infield prospect Marcus Semien hit a home run and drew four walks yesterday for Double-A Birmingham, giving him a season line of .289/.416/.478 with 14 homers, 80 walks, 17 steals, and just 63 strikeouts in 381 at-bats. I have received several questions about him lately and will do a Prospect of the Day piece for him soon.
