Minor League Ball Gameday, July 18

Triple-A All Star Tony Sanchez - Otto Greule Jr

Good afternoon prospect watchers. The Top 75 Prospects List update is complete. My next goals are the Prospect Retrospectives I promised for Marco Scutaro, Eric Stults, and Chris Davis. After that, I will turn my attention next week to reviewing the pre-season Top 20 prospects list, and of course we will cover prospects involved in any trade deadline activity.

***Yesterday's Minor League Ball Gameday thread.

***Biggest news in the minor leagues yesterday comes from Victor Sanchez of the Seattle Mariners, who threw a no-hitter for Low-A Clinton in the Midwest League against Lansing. In 63.2 innings he now has a 48/8 K/BB ratio, with 57 hits allowed and a 2.83 ERA. His control is quite remarkable for an 18-year-old in full-season ball; he was signed out of Venezuela in 2011. Sabermetrically-speaking, I'd like to see more strikeouts but given his age and strong performance otherwise, I see him as a top 100 candidate.

***Boston Red Sox prospect Henry Owens and the High-A Salem bullpen also combined for a no-hitter yesterday, with relievers Matty Ott and Matt Price closing down the game after six hitless from Owens.

***The Triple-A All Star game between top International League and Pacific Coast League performers was played last night in Reno, the IL defeating the PCL by a 4-3 score. A three-run homer from Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Tony Sanchez was the key factor in the IL victory. As is typical in Triple-A games, the contest featured a mixture of genuine prospects like Sanchez, Billy Hamilton of the Reds, Jarrod Cosart of the Astros, and Matt Davidson of the Diamondbacks with journeymen types like Jim Neygrich and Jason Pridie.
