Good morning prospect watchers. The 2013 MLB Draft is obviously the main focus for everyone's interest today, but regular daily action continues in the minor leagues of course. Draft discussion should go in the relevant thread, but we need one for the minors too, so here it is.
***Yesterday's Minor League Ball Gameday thread.
***Amazing almost-no-hitter last night from Atlanta Braves rookie Julio Teheran. He now has a 3.30 ERA with a 55/15 K/BB in 71 innings. What can you say? His problems from last year seem resolved to the satisfaction of the pitching gods.
***Three homers for Oakland Athletics first base prospect Max Muncy yesterday, who is now hitting .283/.401/.491 in 59 games for Stockton in the High-A California League. A fifth-round pick last year out of Baylor, Muncy is praised for his excellent plate discipline and superior defense at first base, but scouts wondered how his power would play in pro ball. I compared him to Doug Mientkiewicz in my book this year, who had a similar skill set and was a fifth round pick out of Florida State in 1995. So far, that comp holds up.
***Danny Duffy of the Royals looked very good in a rehab start for Double-A Northwest Arkansas yesterday and is heading up to Triple-A Omaha for his next outing. Velocity reports are solid and he seems to have his stuff back to nearly full strength a year after Tommy John surgery. I'm sure the Royals will take it easy with his workload, but at present trends he could be back in the majors in the second half.
***Byron Buxton returned to action after missing several games with a sore hand. He went 5-for-6 with a double and two triples. Seems healthy to me!
I picked Kevin Gausman in the Shadow Draft over Buxton a year ago. Gausman is great, already in the majors, and looks like a future ace. But Buxton. . .Buxton is just amazing and I wish I'd taken him instead.
***Today's minor league baseball schedule.
***Amazing and, I find, very depressing story about a fraudulent prospect named Montaous Walton.
