.15 - Ryne Stanek - Ryne was pretty much the guy we expected to get, the D'Backs have a history of drafting HS hitters and college pitchers. The premium HS bats (Meadows, Frazier, Smith) went early, and we were not focused on drafting a prep C (Montero) or SS (Gregorius) with this pick. We knew that, if all the HS bats were off the board, we were likely to have a shot at Stanek. Ryne has had an up-and-down season, his mechanics are inconsistent. But he has been money for the Razorbacks in playoff time, and we think our coaches can get his mechanics into better shape so his pure stuff can play.
.36 - Billy McKinney - we were focused on Billy and Cord Sandberg here, and our first choice was available. We pounced quickly, he is David Dahl with (we hope) a more responsible attitude toward his future profession.
.52 - Matt Krook - this was a value pick for us, most mocks have him going in the late first. He's a HS lefty with #1 or #2 potential, and our coaches have had good success with developing young arms. With Stanek on a fast track, we were thrilled to get a guy with this much potential at this point in the draft. Slot value for this pick is about $1 million, we think we may have to go higher to convince him to sign. Thids dictaget our next pick.
.88 - George "Buck" Farmer - Buck is a senior at Georgia Tech, and has never been drafted before the 13th round before. He has a low 90's fastball, and has had a fine season; we expect to be able to sign him for a fraction of the $600K slot value and bring him along as, at worst, a middle relief type. At 6'-4", 200 pounds, Buck has the frame to be an innings eating 5th starter if he develops his secondaries.
.120 - Chris Rivera - Chris is a prep middle infielder with a solid glove and a bit of pop in his bat. We like his chances to develop into an everyday ML middle infielder, and as a guy who is committed to JUCO, we think we can convince him to sign well within the slot value of $400K. If we're right, we will have the ability to go overslot with some later picks.
